T h e P recious N am e by: Jimmy W. Cox August 16, 2015 When a young lady marries, she leaves her old name and adopts the name of her husband. She is called by his name, writes, speaks, transacts business, and honors his name. When we become Christians, we are joined to Christ in spiritual wedlock. (Eph. 5:25-27). We left our old name and took upon ourselves the name of the Lord Jesus. Now, we wear His name, talking and working in His name that is, by His authority and for His glory. In His name ---We assemble. "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." (Matt. 18:20). We proclaim the Word. "And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:15-16). We were baptized. "Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38). We baptize believers. "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord." (Acts 10:48). Also read Matt. 28:19,20.) We pray unto the Father, in the name of Jesus. (Read John 14:13 14: John 15:16). We bow the knee and confess with the tongue. "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Phil. 2:10-11). We suffer persecution. "...rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name." (Acts 5:41). We glorify God. (Read 1 Peter. 4:15, 16). We enjoy salvation. (Read Matt. 1:21; Acts 4:11, 12).
Four Versions of Mark 16:16 -Roy Foutz The Universalist says: "he that believeth not and is not baptized shall be saved." All are going to be saved whether they are baptized or not. The Roman Catholic says: "He that believeth not and is baptized shall be saved." Whether it be a newborn baby or an adult at the point of death. The "sacrament" of baptism has validity to take away sins. The Protestant says: "He that believeth and is not baptized shall be saved." Salvation is by faith only, without baptism or anything else. The LORD said: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." Which "versions" should we accept? Scripture Reading Joshua 7:2-9 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the country. So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few. 4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water. 6 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, Alas, Lord GOD, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies? 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name? Word Search Joshua 7 The New King James Version. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982. Print.
