St. Paul's is an affirming and inclusive Christian community striving through worship, love and service to welcome all people just as God created you. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, and whether you are single, married, divorced, separated, or partnered, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender expression, sexual orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we! All are welcome, no exceptions! First Sunday after Epiphany: The Baptism of Our Lord January 8, 2017, 10:30 A.M.

Welcome to worship this morning! The Holy Eucharist Rite I The Liturgy of the Word Introit: Jubilate Deo! The Adult/Youth and Children s Choirs Raise A Song of Gladness [Taizé] Jacques Berthier Processional Hymn # 135 Songs of thankfulness and praise Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Glory to God: Gloria in excelsis S 278 2

The Collect of the Day The Baptism of Our Lord The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan didst proclaim him thy beloved Son and anoint him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with thee and the same Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The First Lesson Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

Psalm 29 1 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods,* ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name;* worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders;* the LORD is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice;* the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees;* the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,* and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;* the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe* and strips the forest bare. 9 And in the temple of the LORD* all are crying, Glory! 10 The LORD sits enthroned above the flood;* the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. 11 The LORD shall give strength to his people;* the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace. 5

The Second Lesson Acts 10:34-43 Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn # 131 When Christ s appearing was made known (Vs. 1, 3, 5) 6

The Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory be to thee, Lord Christ. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Reverend Stacy Walker Silence for meditation 7

The Renewal of Baptismal Vows The stand. At the baptism of our Lord Jesus in the river Jordan, we have been called into a new covenant with God and called Children of God. I call upon you, therefore as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of our Lord to renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy catholic Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? 8

I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Prayers of the for The Baptism of Our Lord Intercessor Blessing God, you drowned evil in the waters of the flood and promised a covenant of faithfulness with a rainbow in the sky. In baptism you caused us to die to sin and raised us to new life in Christ. Trusting in your promises for earth and all people, we bring you our prayers for the world, saying: Mothering Spirit, stir us with your power. 9

The Confession Page 331 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. In unison Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. Prayers for The Ending of a Pastoral Relationship On the first day of September, 2010, I began as the rector of St. Paul s in DeKalb. I have, with God s help and to the best of my abilities, exercised this trust, accepting its privileges and responsibilities. 12

After prayer and careful consideration, it now seems to me that I should leave this charge, and I publicly state that my tenure as rector of St. Paul s ends this day. Do you, as the people of St. Paul s, recognize and accept the conclusion of this pastoral relationship? We do. Comments from Reverend Stacy In Unison O God, you have bound us together for a time as priest and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom in this place: We give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared in these years now past. (Silence) We thank you for your patience with us despite our blindness and slowness of heart. We thank you for your forgiveness and mercy in the face of our many failures. (Silence) Especially we thank you for your never-failing presence with us through these years, and for the deeper knowledge of you and of each other which we have attained. (Silence) We thank you for those who have been joined to this part of Christ s family through baptism. We thank you for opening our hearts and minds again and again to your Word, and for feeding us abundantly with the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of your Son. (Silence) 13

Now, we pray, be with those who leave and with us who stay; and grant that all of us, by drawing ever nearer to you, may always be close to each other in the communion of your saints. All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy sprit. Then we greet one another saying, Peace be with you. Doxology Hymn # 380 v. 3 Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And with thy sprit. Lift up your hearts. The Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, thou hast caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of thy glory in the face of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, 15

Sanctus: S 114 Holy, holy, holy All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me." 16

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, In Unison Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Silence is observed after the bread is broken 17

Household Prayer: Evening Holy One, you stretched out the heavens and spread out the earth, and in that context I give you this small day that I have lived. Now may I sleep, safe and secure in your covenant promise to me that I am your beloved child, in whom you are well pleased. Amen. 26
