Order of Worship Entering God s Presence Call to Worship Psalm 96:1, 4-5 4 Leader: Oh sing to the LORD a new song; People: sing to the LORD, all the earth! Leader: For great is the LORD, People: and greatly to be praised; Leader: he is to be feared above all gods. People: For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Gathering Song Jesus Is King Page 9 Prayer of Invocation Mutual Greeting Responsive Reading, Michele Prince Psalm 73 Leader: Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. People: But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. Leader: For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. People: They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. Leader: Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. People: They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Leader: Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. People: All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Leader: When I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, People: until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.

Leader: Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. People: How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! Leader: When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, People: I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. Leader: Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. People: You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Leader: Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. People: My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Leader: Behold, those who are far from you shall perish. People: But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. Enjoying God s Fellowship Sermon The King s Food Pastor Glenn Parkinson Sermon text: Daniel 1:5-21 5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. 6 Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego. 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. 9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king. 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see. 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king s food. 16 So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. 17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus. Song of Praise I Will Rise There s a peace I ve come to know, Though my heart and flesh may fail. There s an anchor for my soul I can say, It is well. Chorus Jesus has overcome, and the grave is overwhelmed; The victory is won, He is risen from the dead. And I will rise when He calls my name; No more sorrow; no more pain. I will rise on eagle s wings; Before my God fall on my knees, and rise. I will rise. There s a day that s drawing near When this darkness breaks to light, And the shadows disappear, And my faith shall be my eyes. Bridge And I hear the voice of many angels sing, Worthy is the Lamb! And I hear the cry of ev ry longing heart, Worthy is the Lamb! Words and Music by Louie Giglio, Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher, and Jesse Reeves 12

Reflection & Preparation Reflection: Daniel 1:5-21 This Week: Quote God s authority alone is supreme and limits every form of human authority. When human authorities command us to disobey God, or they forbid us to do what God commands, then we must reply with Peter and John, We must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). John Frame (The Doctrine of the Christian Life, pg. 581) 1 Samuel 2:12-36 I Will Honor Those Who Honor Me 1 John 5:20-21 Guard Yourselves From Idols Psalm 73:1-28 God is Good to Israel John 12:20-28 If Anyone Serves Me, the Father Will Honor Him Prayer: Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer You true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain Your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
