FIRST DRAFT Family of Edmund Research by Tim & Sheila Holmes January 2009

Descendants of Samuel Samuel 1745-1788 Bridget Kettle 1745-1782 Samuel 1768 - William 1770 - John 1772 - Elizabeth 1775 - Robert 1782-1862 Lucy Barber 1786-1865 1

Family Notes for Samuel Samuel is the earliest known member of the family and it is believed he was born in Pettistree and married Bridget Kettle in 1766. They had at least five children. 2

Descendants of Robert Robert 1782-1862 Lucy Barber 1786-1865 George 1802-1805 - Robert Mayhew 1816 - Robert 1807-1891 Lucy Elizabeth 1809 - Eliza 1811 - William 1817 - Hannah Knights 1820 - Henry 1819 - Edward 1826-1901 Harriet Leek 1825-1899 Lucy 1826 - Harriet 1828-3

Family Notes for Robert It is believed that Robert and Lucy were Edmund's grandparents. They were both born in Pettistree in the 1780's nad they married in 1805. According to another researcher, by 1841 they were living and continued to do so until the 1861 census when they were living in Wickham Market. He may have died in 1862, Lucy in 1865. In total they had at least 9 children., mother of Edmund, was probably the eldest and she was probably born out of wedlock, her parents marrying just after her birth. Their eldest son was also called Robert and he also married a Lucy. The IGI records she was also a Lucy Barber, but whether this is accurate or not needs verification. They had at least six children. William married Hannah Knights from Pettistree. Another child, Edward, married Harriet Leek and they had at least 11 children and lived in Wickham Marketg most of their maried life. 4

Descendants of Edmund Edmund 1827-1913 Rebecca Davy 1824-1899 Ephraim 1849 - Sarah 1851-1853 - Ellen Eliza 1855 - Thomas William 1859 - Harriet Elizabeth 1861 - Emily Rosina 1863 - Elijah Fred 1866 - Silas 1867-5

Family Notes for Edmund It is believed that Edmund was the illegitimate son of George and. He was born in 1827 in Campsea Ashe and an IGI record indciates he was son of or Barber. His father's name is not recorded, but family tradition has it that George was the father. Evidence from the log of the Java also indicates this. He married Rebecca Davy (possibly Davies) and they lived for at least some time in Kettleburgh, although their second child was born. They emigrated to Australia on board the ship Java and this arrived at Botany Bay on 24th or 27th April 1853. Sadly their youngest daughter, Sarah, died on the voyage. The record of the voyage records that Edmund's parents were George and, the latter living at Kettleburgh. They paid 3 for the trip and it is recorded that Edmund could read and that Rebeca could both read and write. Evidence for Edmund in Australia comes from family trees of other researchers and needs further verification. It is believed he and Rebecca had a further seven children and that he dies in 1913, his wife having died in 1899. 6

Descendants of George 1802-1805 - Robert Mayhew 1816 - Edmund 1827-1913 Rebecca Davy 1824-1899 David Mayhew 1838 - Alan Mayhew 1842 - Robert Mayhew 1844 - James Mayhew 1848 - Ephraim 1849 - Sarah 1851-1853 - Ellen Eliza 1855 - Thomas William 1859 - Harriet Elizabeth 1861 - Emily Rosina 1863 - Elijah Fred 1866 - Silas 1867-7

Family Notes for was the daughter of Robert and Lucy, born at Campsea Ashe in 1805. She was the mother of Edmund, but did not marry the father, George. Instead it is believed - but more verification is required - that she married Robert Mayhew in 1834 and moved to Kettleburgh. They had at least 4 children. Nothing is known of them after 1871. 8

Descendants of Nathaniel Nathaniel 1761-1841 Born: 1761 Sarah Wright - 1839 Married: 20 Oct 1793 in Pettistree Cont. p. 9 William 1810 - Born: 28 Feb 1810 Susan 1814 - Born: 1814 William 1838 - Born: 1838 in Holton George 1841 - Born: 1841 in Holton Sarah Ann 1845 - Born: 1845 in Holton Charles 1846 - Born: 1846 in Holton James 1848 - Born: 1848 in Holton John 1850 - Born: 1850 in Holton 10

Family Notes for Nathaniel Nathaniel is the earliest known ancestor in the family and he was grandfather of Edmund. He married Sarah Wright in 1793 at Pettistree, but he was born and they appeared to live in the village. They had at least 10 children, some of whom we have found records: Charles was second son, but it looks as though he died when only 3 years old. Edward lived from 1799 to 1863 and is buried, along with his wife Susan, in the churchyard at Campsea Ashe. It is believed he was a Police Constable for the village as well as being a 'farmer of 8 acres' (1851 census). George was father of Edmund, but he did not marry Edmund's mother,. It is not known what happened to George. Eliza was another child who died in infancy - 7 May 1809 aged about 1 year old. William was the youngest child, born 1811. A record of him has been found living in Holton, Norwich, in 1851, although this needs verification. His recorded age is about right and he was born, so this could be him. He was married to Susan and they had six children. 11
