Luke Lesson 75 Handout Luke 18:35 43 (NASB95) 35 As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He questioned him, 41 What do you want Me to do for you? And he said, Lord, I want to regain my sight! 42 And Jesus said to him, Receive your sight; your faith has made you well. 43 Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God. John 21:21 22 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man? 22 Jesus said to him, If I want him to stay (survive, live) until I come, what is that to you? [What concern is it of yours?] You follow Me! 1

Mark 8:34-35 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. Luke 18:43 and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God. Luke 19:1 10 1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. 3 Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. 5 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house. 6 And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. 7 When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner. 2

8 Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much. 9 And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. 2 Cor.6:1 As God s co-workers we urge you not to receive God s grace in vain. 2For he says, In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God s favor, now is the day of salvation. Matthew 3:1 2 1 Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 2 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mark 1:14-15 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." New Bible Dictionary - repentance not just as a feeling sorry, or changing one s mind, but as a turning round, a complete alteration of the basic motivation and direction of one s life. 3

Acts 3:19 (AMP) 19 So repent (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord; Luke 3:8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Hebrews 12:5 10 (NIV84) 5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: My son, do not make light of the Lord s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son. 4

7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. Psalm 32:3-4 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Psalm 32:5 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 51:3 4 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. 5

Stuart Briscoe differentiates between false repentance and real repentance: 'Baby repentance is sorry for what it has done. If I am merely sorry for what I have done... I will go out and do it again. 2 Corinthians 7:9 10 9 I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. 6
