Snyder Church Secretary: Sara Zettlemoyer Trick or Treat for the Food Bank The Messenger OCTOBER 2011 Trick or Treat for the Food Bank has become an annual tradition for Girl Scout Troop 20689 and First Christian Church. Girl Scouts will give up their evening of Trick or Treating for candy on Thursday, October 27 so that they can collect nonperishable food items. Last year we collected over 125 items for the local food banks. This year, we are happy to say, the items we collect will be distributed to Five Loaves Food Bank and the New Hope Ministries Organization. As we did last year, the Girl Scouts will be asking members of the church to support us by donating food, joining us distributing flyers, or being at First Christian Church Trick or Treat night handing out candy or accepting food donations. Here is where we ask YOU for your help. We urge you to donate WRAPPED CANDIES and TREATS that will be used to pass out on Trick or Treat night at the church. (Please see that your donation is in the designated container placed in the narthex no later than 10/03.) Our goal is to prepare 500 bags of treats to be passed out. Also, make note that on October 11 th beginning at 6:00pm, the Girl Scouts will be handing out flyers to all the neighborhood houses letting them know about our food drive. If you would like to help us cover more ground and help pass out flyers that would be greatly appreciated. Girl Scout Troop 20689 Looks forward to another successful year collecting a great deal of non-perishable food items for those in need. Pastor s Page Christian Education. In many ways, it sounds like a something a little boring and maybe reminds you of school. But, Christian education is a vital part of our life together as church. Basically, Christian education is learning more about God. This can happen through studying the Bible, learning about church history or traditions, exploring contemporary topics through the lens of our faith, or learning new strategies for church leadership. It is through study and learning opportunities that we are able to grow in our faith and our relationship with God and others. True, it is sometimes hard when the things that we have always thought are challenged either by new ideas or by people who think differently. But, it is also wonderful when we can explore the questions of our faith together and know that there are no right answers. Rather, it is the journey and struggle to learn and grow which help deepen our relationships with God. In this newsletter, you will find three opportunities for Christian education Sunday School for Adults, Sunday School for children, and a special one day time to learn about being the church in 21 st century. I hope that you will see if one of these is right for you or members of your family. If none of these suit you, I would love to hear what you are interested in exploring. Come let us journey together as we explore the questions of our faith. Pastor Diana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Out of the Blue Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: old things have passed away, behold all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 I am still having some discomfort in my ankle and foot from my unconscious fall on July 25. At times I catch myself limping and other times I walk fine. I have even been able to go out and play golf and then there are times when I do not think I am going to make it through the grocery store. The doctor said it would take 6 weeks or so to heal because a sprain is so much worse than a break. I was reading an article where a therapist told a patient with a knee replacement that they had to retrain their brain. Our brain has been trained to limp in anticipation. Even if I don t feel the pain right away, I know it is coming. I have to retrain my brain. If we go by the words in 2 Corinthians, we have to retrain our brain to believe and to ACCEPT that each of us is a new creation. Christ has done the restoration work in you. Christ has given you a new life. The old one has passed and gone are any sinful deeds, thoughts or words. You are a NEW creation today! Retrain your brain to accept the forgiveness and restoration that Christ has done in your life for He has done so much for you. Stop limping through life, walk or perhaps even jog a bit. Retrain your brain! Journeying along with a slightly left over limp, Linda Page 2

Either way this class is for you! Come and explore favorite Old Testament Bible stories in an exciting and thought provoking way. This class is based on material by popular author J. Ellsworth Kalas, who brings a new perspective to selected Old Testament stories by approaching them from the back side through a unique starting point, a creative retelling, a new lens, or the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character. The class will be taught by various people including Pastor Diana, Tom Runkle and Keith Aubel. The class meets in the Sunday School class room on the sanctuary level. Our Change Jars and Blessing Box offerings will go to the Disciples Reconciliation Ministry. There will also be a special offering on Oct 2nd Purpose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) celebrates the Gospel teaching that God s children come from all places and that the power of love at God s table is able to bring together all races, languages, cultures and traditions. (Revelation 5: 9-10) We recognize that there have been forces within our Church and society that have misshapen our self-understanding and promoted division. Acknowledging God s call to be faithful to the witness of unity and justice, we confess that we are sinful and that racism is a result of our sinfulness. Yet, God heals us and calls us to be reconciled one to another and all to God. Mission: Reconciliation Ministry advances the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ's journey toward wholeness by empowering each expression of the Church to implement structural change to address historic fractures caused by racism and the systems that perpetuate it. It is the goal of our shared work to foster life-giving community within our church and in relationship with the whole family of God. We accomplish this mission through intentional dialogue, inclusive worship and experiential education.
