No. 9 8 January 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, Reflecting We would expect to hear about the baptism of Jesus in Sunday s Gospel, wouldn t we? Well, we do. The Gospel is about Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan. The account says that after Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens are torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descends upon him and a voice from heaven says, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. So there it is: This is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and Gospel is about the baptism of the Lord. But the baptism of Jesus is toward the end of Sunday s Gospel. The first part of the Gospel tells of John s proclamation about someone coming who is far greater, mightier, than he. John says that he is not worthy even to bend down and loosen the straps of that person s sandals. He insists that his baptism is with water, but that this person who is to come will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. We don t want to miss this important part of Sunday s Gospel because it tells us who we are as baptized Christians. The word baptize comes from a Greek word that means plunge or immerse. In receiving Jesus as the Savior of the whole world- as we talked about last week when we celebrated the Epiphany- we are plunged or immersed into a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit. On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we renew our own baptismal promises. We reject Satan and sin, and we profess faith in Jesus Christ. I wish everyone a wonderful New Year as we enter 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who wished my mother the best over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, her health has not improved, and we are monitoring it. Admissions 2015-2016 We are beginning the admission process for the 2015-2016 school year. In 2 nd grade, students have discussed how this can be difficult when faced with temptations. Some of the temptations that were talked about: dealing with anger, saying mean things to one another, spreading rumors, talking about someone behind their back, and not taking responsibility (such as goofing around in class, talking in class, not completing work). Students will be practicing a technique Stop. Think. And Act. to achieve self control in the classroom and on the playground. Pennies for Patients Student Council is raising awareness about leukaemia and lymphoma through the Pennies for Patients program.
