Thank you for fully funding this project! Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Psalm 100:1-2

Last fall, you joined us in meeting this urgent need Executive Summary Project Description The children of many rural Peruvian families have little access to education because their remote villages are too far from quality schools. To ensure the children in one particularly disadvantaged area could receive a quality education, the Catholic Church established boarding homes in the town of Cotahuasi. This was a godsend to children from surrounding villages because they could finally attend classes. They could live near the school during the week and would only have to travel home on the weekends. Unfortunately, these old boarding homes eventually crumbled, became cramped and were deemed structurally unsafe. You helped us replace these old adobe structures with a new sturdy and spacious boarding home that will endure for generations to come! Our Partner Under the leadership of Fr. Adrian Codevilla, the brothers, nuns and lay staff at the new boarding home will provide food, water, shelter, tutoring, Catholic spirituality and loving Christian fellowship for the children who travel in from the surrounding area. Location The community of Cotahuasi, which is nestled in the valley of the Cotahuasi Canyon in southern Peru, high in the Andes Mountains (8,802 ft.). Campaign Goal $770,000 covered the construction and equipment costs for the new boarding home, which has the capacity to serve 140 students. This new boarding home is 90% complete and will be ready for move in by the end of June! Project Highlights This new boarding home addresses the serious safety concerns that existed with the old adobe structures the Church had been using to house the children. Despite construction delays due to the torrential rains and flooding that plagued the Cotahuasi Canyon area over the last 12 months, construction is now complete. All that remains is some interior detailing, painting and landscaping. The new boarding home accommodates 70 boys and 70 girls paving the way for twice as many poor children to receive an education. More children now have access to books, desks, comfortable beds and tutoring things that are not usually available at their own homes. iii

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Psalm 127:3 (ESV)

SECTION I THE PLAN The Miracle of St. Joseph Building for God s Glory An Ideal Design I cry to you, O Lord; I say, You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Psalm 142:5 1

The Miracle of St. Joseph Whenever Fr. Adrian Codevilla has been in great need, he has called upon St. Joseph, protector of Jesus and Mary, and invoked the Thirty-Day Prayer. During this long period of prayer and reflection, Fr. Adrian experienced a real God moment. He shares with us the events of that time, when he was seeking funding for the new boarding home, and God answered his prayers. It was 2016, and I had written letters to many organizations asking for assistance, he said. I blessed the letters, asking St. Joseph for his blessed intervention that one of the organizations would respond and help us. I promised to purchase an image of St. Joseph to place in our parish, since we didn t have a single image of the blessed saint. The next year, Cross Catholic Outreach responded, saying that they would help us. The real miracle in my mind was when we received our image of St. Joseph. He was with the baby Jesus and there was a cross in his hand. Father thought it was very fitting that this image would feature a cross a fitting reminder of the generosity of Cross donors. 2

Thirty-Day Prayer to St. Joseph Ever blessed and glorious Joseph, kind and loving father, and helpful friend of all in sorrow! You are the good father and protector of orphans, the defender of the defenseless, the patron of those in need and sorrow. Look kindly on my request. My sins have drawn down on me the just displeasure of my God, and so I am surrounded with unhappiness. To you, loving guardian of the Family of Nazareth, do I go for help and protection. Listen, then, I beg you, with fatherly concern, to my earnest prayers, and obtain for me the favors I ask. I ask it by the infinite mercy of the eternal Son of God, which moved Him to take our nature and to be born into this world of sorrow. I ask it by the weariness and suffering you endured when you found no shelter at the inn of Bethlehem for the holy Virgin, nor a house where the Son of God could be born. Then, being everywhere refused, you had to allow the Queen of Heaven to give birth to the world s Redeemer in a cave. I ask it by the loveliness and power of that sacred Name, Jesus, which you conferred on the adorable infant. I ask it by that painful torture you felt at the prophecy of holy Simeon, which declared the Child Jesus and His holy Mother future victims of our sins and of their great love for us. I ask it through your sorrow and pain of soul when the angel declared to you that the life of the Child Jesus was sought by His enemies. From their evil plan you had to flee with Him and His Blessed Mother to Egypt. I ask it by all the suffering, weariness, and labors of that long and dangerous journey. I ask it by all your care to protect the Sacred Child and His Immaculate Mother during your second journey, when you were ordered to return to your own country. I ask it by your peaceful life in Nazareth where you met with so many joys and sorrows. I ask it by your great distress when the adorable Child was lost to you and His Mother for three days. I ask it by your joy at finding Him in the Temple, and by the comfort you found at Nazareth, while living in the company of the Child Jesus. I ask it by the wonderful submission He showed in His obedience to you. I ask it by the perfect love and conformity you showed in accepting the Divine order to depart from this life, and from the company of Jesus and Mary. I ask it by the joy which filled your soul, when the Redeemer of the world, triumphant over death and hell, entered into the possession of His kingdom and led you into it with special honors. I ask it through Mary s glorious Assumption, and through that endless happiness you have with her in the presence of God. O good father! I beg you, by all your sufferings, sorrows, and joys, to hear me and obtain for me what I ask. Obtain for all those who have asked my prayers everything that is useful to them in the plan of God. Finally, my dear patron and father, be with me and all who are dear to me in our last moments, that we may eternally sing the praises of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. 3

Building for God s Glory In 2017, much of Peru experienced horrific flooding, and the catastrophic El Niño weather patterns did not let up as we entered 2018. These torrential rains definitely impacted the boarding home construction schedule, causing work delays and impeding delivery of materials, but our partner remained committed and did everything possible to keep the project moving forward. And, despite the difficulties, God continued to bless the project. We remained on budget and the construction schedule stayed reasonably on track. As you can see from the photos on page 5 taken in April and May virtually all of the work on the buildings has been completed. The electrical wiring and plumbing are in place. All that remains is some interior detailing, painting and landscaping. With the new boarding home now 90% finished, we are confident it will be ready for incoming students by the end of June! Please enjoy these photos that chronicle the progress that was made since construction began. SEPTEMBER 2017 The site was cleared and the foundation was leveled for construction in early September. OCTOBER 2017 Construction on the boarding home began in earnest by late October. 4

JANUARY FEBRUARY 2018 The first floor was completed and work began on the second floor by the end of January. APRIL MAY 2018 Detail work was applied to the interior and exterior by the end of April. Exterior plasterwork was applied by mid-february. The exterior of the building was painted by mid-may. 5

An Ideal Design The new boarding home has been designed and constructed according to the original plans, with boys and girls dormitories divided into separate buildings, to allow for privacy. The new boarding home includes 6 living areas, 2 dining areas, 8 showers and 6 restroom facilities. Housing quarters are included for 3 brothers, 3 sisters and 2 cooks (who live onsite with the children). Each dormitory is approximately 672 sq. ft. Each bathroom/shower facility is approximately 288 sq. ft. Spiritual formation: Sisters and brothers will lead in morning prayers, and will reinforce Catholic values through instruction and practical action. Masses will be held in the first-floor dining hall. The new kitchen facilities are state-of-the-art and will serve up to 140 kids. 6

SECTION II THE ACHIEVEMENT A Community Comes Together Lives Changed Financial Summary Thank You! Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. Proverbs 22:6 7

A Community Comes Together Joyful moments in Cotahuasi The entire community gathered to celebrate the dedication of the building. Villagers donned traditional Andean garb, as song and dance filled the air. The Bishop of the Prelature of Chuquibamba, Rev. Fr. Jorge Enrique Izaguirre Rafael, presided over the official dedication of the new boarding home. It was truly a blessed event for the entire community! After the dedication, participants received Holy Communion. 8

Fr. Adrian prays during evening Mass, held every Sunday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in downtown Cotahuasi. Fr. Adrian holds the monstrance, as he recites a joyful benediction to all the children and villagers in attendance. All the boarding house students regularly attend evening Mass, to praise God before they begin classes on Monday morning. All this was made possible because of your generosity! 9

Lives Changed The following pages share the stories and photos of some of the children whose lives have been enriched, thanks to your support. We hope you are blessed as you see the dramatic difference your selfless gift has made. BOYS Yeferson Canre, 11 Yeferson is extremely excited about the possibility of moving into the new boarding home. The old boarding home was so rundown, it was about to collapse, he says. Yeferson believes that with the added space, more children than ever will be staying at the boarding home. For him personally, it means better competition out on the basketball court, and more opportunities to make lifelong friends. For all the children, it means they have the opportunity to make something of themselves by attending the good schools in Cotahuasi. Diego David Quispe, 11 Diego tells us that the first night in the new boarding home will be one of intense joy. I will be so happy, he says, because everything will be new. Diego is going to school here in Cotahuasi because he hopes someday to be a mining engineer. That is a very lucrative position for a Peruvian. One of the largest copper and silver mines in the world is between Cotahuasi and Arequipa, and there are many gold mines in Peru as well. Thanks to you, Diego has a chance to achieve his dreams. 10

GIRLS Ruth Nataly Quispe, 11 Ruth believes that once the new boarding home opens, children will come from miles around to stay here. They already want to stay at the boarding home, she says. In their villages, there are no schools and some of the children are not able to attend school at all. Ruth is so excited about the new facilities. She can hardly wait until move-in day. The old homes leak when it rains, but the new boarding home is big and beautiful, she says. I praise God for the donors who built the new home, with new beds and dorm rooms. May God bless you for the good work you are doing. We will always pray for you! Yomayra Lopez Vargas, 14 Yomayra is a dedicated young student with big ambitions. She wants to study medicine and enter a professional field and provide for everyone in her family. Thanks to you, the new boarding home will shelter her and provide a safe and nurturing environment, so that she can attend school and make something of herself. This new boarding home is the dream we have always dreamed, says Yomayra. Now it has become a reality. It is going to be exciting and comfortable for all us girls. I also believe this home will make it possible for new girls from new generations to enjoy their dreams. And the Church will help us be better people, better daughters and better Catholics. Thanks to you more children will receive an education. Now with the new boarding home, you will see even more boarders walking to school through the streets of Cotahuasi! 11

Thank You! One year ago, we told you about Fr. Adrian Codevilla s sacrificial service to our Lord, and we urged you to help him Shelter the Little Children by building a new boarding home and providing for a child s education. Today, Fr. Adrian s ambitious dreams are coming true because of you, and the poor will be literally lifted from the dust and put on a road to a better future as a result. Because of you, more children will have access to books, desks, comfortable beds and tutoring things that are simply not available at their own homes. Thank you for helping us build a new sturdy and spacious boarding home that will endure for generations to come. On behalf of the many grateful children and parents who are benefiting from this life-changing project, please accept our heartfelt gratitude! None of this would be possible without compassionate friends like you. God Bless You! 13

Our Mission We mobilize the global Catholic Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the glory of Jesus Christ. How We Serve Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries allows us to support the Church s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities. Good Stewardship We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach. These detailed accountability measures have earned us ongoing accreditation by the following organizations: INTERNATIONAL CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL For detailed info about the impact of Cross Catholic Outreach s global mission for the poor, go to CrossCatholic.org/Impact. 2700 N.
