Spiritual Disciplines #2: God s Word

Transcription:

We have covered the topics of stretch your heart, finances and heart in this series and it is also important for us to cover another important topic which I will call Stretched by the word. Every topic we have learnt so far whether its on finances, the heart or prayer has been based on the word of God. The Word of God is important in the life of a believer. It can be equated to Spiritual food. We need it for us to be sustained spiritually as well as to grow spiritually. Some key verses that show how the word is important in our lives as it is the one which sustains us include, Matthew 4:4 New International Version (NIV) 4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. [a] The devil tempted Jesus after he had fasted forty days and forty nights and he was hungry by saying if you are the Son of God turn these stones into bread, but Jesus responded with the word and saying man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Is that how you live as well, or you are easily tempted and slip back as the word f God is not central or important in your life. Examine yourself and see how important the word id in your life. John 6:35 New International Version (NIV) 35 Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. The word of God is our food and we should rely on it completely. It should be our source for everything that we do. The word of God must be based on the bible. It cannot be based on any other source. When we look at the bible, this is containing the Word of God. The bible is the Lord s inspired account and interpretation of his revelation to us. All the people who wrote the bible were inspired by God. This means that whatever the Bible says is what the Lord is saying. This becomes what the Lord is saying when we correctly interpret the scriptures. If we incorrectly interpret what the scriptures are saying it is possible to have the wrong meaning of what the scriptures are saying. Therefore, it is crucial for us as believers to learn the correct way of studying the bible. When we read the bible, our focus should always be on Jesus. Our study of God s word should be centered on Christ because Jesus is God and he is the word. 1 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

John 1 v 1-4 (NLT) 1In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He existed in the beginning with God. 3God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4The Word gave life to everything that was created, a and his life brought light to everyone Hebrews 1 New International Version (NIV) God s Final Word: His Son 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. Jesus came and became flesh and made his dwelling on the earth and he is the word. John 1 v 1-14(NKJV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. We can not therefore study the Word of God without Jesus being at the Centre of our studies as he is God and he is the Word of God. The life of Christ is the clearest revelation of God therefore his life and teachings, his words and works are very important. Therefore, if we are studying a passage in the Old Testament or New Testament, to interpret the scriptures correctly we need to ask ourselves if Jesus said or did anything that would guide how we interpret the scripture or does it fit into the nature of God as revealed by Jesus. Since we need the Word of God to nourish us it is our responsibility as children of God to have a desire to dip deeper in the word. Our learning about God and his word will not only happen 2 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

on a Sunday when we come to church. Sunday is like a pep talk and we should take time on our own to feed on God s word. The word of God is not for sale and its for free and the more we study it the more we are filled with it. Matthew 5:6 New International Version (NIV) 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Isaiah 55:1-2 55 Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare What then is the importance of the Word of God in the life of a believer? Jeremiah 23 v 29 29 Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? (NIV). 1. God s word is like a hammer- What is the function of a hammer -a tool consisting of a solid head, usually of metal, set crosswise on a handle, used for beating metals, driving nails, etc. It is used to pound. God s word can break up and soften harden hearts. Where hearts have been hardened by sin the Word breaks the hardness of the heart. When you read the word, it softens your heart. E.g. if you are bitter, you are lacking forgiveness. 3 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

2. God s word is like a fire- What does a fire do? It burns. The word is quick and piercing. It goes into the minds of people. The word consumes and gets rid of things that are not Godly in our lives as it brings understanding of the wrong they do it enlightens people to the truth. e.g. deceit in our hearts, sinful practices lie lying or stealing. 3. God s word is like a two-edged sword Hebrews 4:12 New International Version (NIV) 12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Alive and active some versions describe the word of God as being quick- this shows that the word has power it is like living water and it is not dead. The word of God is continuously at work in our lives. It is there to give life. Sharper the word of God cuts almost like a single stroke not many blows as it is sharp Double edged sword- it has two edges as the double mouth of a river Penetrating- The word of God goes through. It pierces. Even to- as far as Judging- It discerns Thoughts and attitude thinking, what is being meditated on, will, manner of feeling The word of God is there to convict us and separate us from wrong thinking and attitudes and bring us into a place of victory 2 Timothy 3:16 New International Version (NIV) 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, James 1:23-25 New International Version (NIV) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it not forgetting what they have heard but doing it they will be blessed in what they do. 4 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

4. God s word is a lamp. The word of God helps the believer in the decision-making processes whether it is every day decisions that one makes or long-term decisions. Psalm 119:105(NLT) Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. It gives life John 6:63 New International Version (NIV) 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you they are full of the Spirit [a] and life It exposes sin in our lives Hebrews 4:12 New International Version (NIV) 12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. It gives direction and it guides Proverbs 6:22-23 New International Version (NIV) 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. 23 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life How often should one read the word? A believer should read the word of God daily as it is our food. We eat food everyday some of us have 6 portions of food in a day. In the same way we eat food to keep ourselves healthy, we also need to feed on the word every single day to keep ourselves healthy. When we look at Matthew 6 it reads: - Matthew 6:11New International Version Give us today our daily bread. 5 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

This verse shows that we need to replenish ourselves every day Since a believer needs to read the Word every day, it is important that we create a sustainable culture and habit. This means we need to set aside to study the word at a time which works for an individual. It should be a time where there are no disturbances and when we are most alert, so we can concentrate and understand the word. The place where one carries out their reading of the word should be at a place where one is also not disturbed. How does one study the word of God? It is important to understand that revelation and understanding of the word is not only something we can get by our own understanding. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to assist us as we read the word of God. When we read the word of God it should not be done as a matter of routine but to develop a solid relationship with God. The reading of the word should be spirit led. The spirit leads us into knowing the truth. 1 Corinthians 2:11-12 New International Version (NIV) 11 For who knows a person s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. It is important before reading to pray and ask the Holy spirit to help in understanding the scriptures. This helps to get one s thoughts aligned to God s thoughts when studying the word. Our heart which is also the seat of our emotions will also be aligned to what God feels about us. There are different ways of studying the bible:- a) Studying the Old testament from Genesis to Malachi or similarly the New Testament from Matthew to Revelation b) Selecting a portion to read daily from the New Testament and one from the Old Testament c) Topical studies. This is when you choose to study a topic such as Faith or Prayer. A good bible will usually have a concordance at the back which you can use to study a topic from there as it will help you find the verses that are linked to the particular topic. 6 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018

d) Reading the word also using scriptures from the taught word at church. It is critical to review the word we hear at church and apply the scriptures to our own lives It is important to ask yourself questions so that you grasp what you learn. These questions can be written down in a journal or notebook as well as the answers. As a student of the Word of God you study it with an open mind to learn. If there were belief systems that you had that do not agree make a decision to change and align yourself with the word of God. In that way you are changed within. Do not try and come up with revelation that is not aligned to the word of God every revelation should be based on the word of God and cannot be new and coming from the Word All prophecy should also be aligned to the word. No new doctrine can come from a man s idea. Prophecy should be tested against the Word of God. The bible should be the final authority in your life as it is authoritative and contains the truth. Jesus should be central in our study of the word as he is the greatest revelation of God. 7 Stretch By the Word: Fadzai Manyuni 03 June 2018
