HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 25, 2016 Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David they devise their own accompaniment. Abraham replied, My child remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad, but now he is comforted here whereas you are tormented. The story Jesus tells of poor man Lazarus is not just a story, but tells us of today. The prophet Amos speaks to us, blessed, comfortable, complacent, satisfied, and sometimes avaricious, seeking more and more, less grateful and less satisfied while ignoring others in need. Surely, we are a most charitable people, but giving from our excess. We should examine our wants and our needs. Pope Saint John Paul spoke at Battery Park in New York, telling us that Lazarus is at our door. The sad thing with the rich man, was not that he didn t help, he seemingly did not see the person at his door. As he looked out he looked past, he looked over someone nearby. As parents do we look to the real needs of our children. As adults does our compassion for the elderly sick and disturbed cause me pain? The often quoted statement prophets are to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable should allow today s scripture to speak to our hearts. CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. First, I would like to thank you very much for your continued financial and spiritual support for your parish. I do take seriously the pastoral responsibility to be a good steward of your donations. May God bless you for your care, concern, and sacrifices of time, talent, and treasure. Second, I do want to thank the Trustees and members of the Finance Council for all they do to help the parish. I would like to give you some particular points to think of as you look at the financial report: * The parish financial situation has improved a great deal over the last year. * We have had a steady inflow of income as compared to last year * We reduced our parish debt by $1.3 million dollars. * We are current in all diocesan assessments/ bills for the first time in 8 years. * We have decreased our interest payments by $55 thousand as we move into this current fiscal year * We renegotiated the mortgage loan which should result in an interest rate savings of approximately $25,000 per year. * Major expenses are a result of increases in: overall cost of living, health insurance costs and flood insurance costs. * Closing expenses for the school were $118,000. During this fiscal year, we hope to look at more cost saving measures and continue to make strides for fiscal stability for the future. Let us ask St. Denis to continue to pray for us as we move forward. SING & PRAISE THE LORD AT THE BEACH CHAPEL- On the First Friday in October (10/7/16), all are invited to Praise and Worship at 7:00 pm at the Beach Chapel, (approx. 30 minutes). PERMANENT DIACONATE DISCERNMENT-The Church is looking for men who would consider serving God's people as a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Trenton. Also, call Fr. Bill for more information. There will be two information sessions in the diocese on Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 19. You need to talk to Fr. Bill first who will then help you to register for the session of your choice. "The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few: so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." Let us pray for vocations to the diaconate.

VINCENT DE PAUL On September 27, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who knew that God had sent him to bring good news to the poor. Together with your gifts, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work and mission in our parish. We received a thank you note from a neighbor, that we helped recently. We want to share that thank you with all of our generous parishioners. I just want to take the time and thank each and everyone of you. When Lynn called me from day one, I felt a small amount of relief come over me. However, when I received her final call after the board meeting letting me know that my rent and utilities will all be paid, I finally saw a light at the end of a dark tunnel. Knowing that there are people willing to help someone like me, a hard working single mom, it has restored my faith. On July 8 th I was able to take my daughter to the doctor without any worry and have her medicine picked up without worry. On July 8 th I was actually able to swallow without feeling like my throat was closing from stress. I dug myself into a hole trying to take care of everyone and everything. In the end I was unhappy, I was not sleeping and cried often. I can not put into words on how thankful I am for all of you. I thank God every morning and night that I found St. Vincent de Paul. I can enjoy my kids with no stress and smile. Thank you. Our next general meeting will be Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm in Msgr. O'Connor Hall. The St. Denis Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has its general meetings at 7:00 PM the first and third Tuesdays of every month. All are welcome.
