Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church Sharing the love of Jesus to transform lives, Cincinnati and the world. Enter to hear the Good News of God s love and to experience God s hope and peace. WE ENTER GOD S PRESENCE WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Sign and pass the friendship/attendance pad located in the pew rack. PRELUDE: Prelude on Irby Brenda Portman, organist David Willcocks SILENT PRAYER OF PREPARATION: O living and loving God, prepare our hearts for what You have for us this morning. Give us ears to hear Your good news, hearts to receive it, minds to comprehend it, and the faith to live it. We offer ourselves in worship and praise. Amen. PROCESSIONAL CAROL: (Seated) Once In Royal David s City Agatha Hickerson, Treble Soloist Soloist: Choir: All sing: Once in Royal David s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Savior holy. Jesus is our childhood s pattern, day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. 3

*INVITATION (Standing): Friends in Christ, in this Christmas season let us hear again the message of the angels, and, in our hearts and minds, journey to Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Therefore, let us read in Holy Scripture of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought to us by this Holy Child. Let us lift our voices together in prayer: We pray for the needs of the whole world, for peace on earth and goodwill among all God s people. We remember, in Christ s name, the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry, the oppressed, the sick and them that mourn. We remember those who rejoice with us, but upon the heavenly shore and in a greater light; the multitude of saints which no one can number, whose hope was in Christ and with whom in the Lord we are one for evermore. These prayers we offer in the name of him who taught us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever. Amen. *LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH 9:30 Liza Swaile 11:00 Patrick Wantz Today we remember Joseph, worn-out traveller and worried husband, doing what was necessary to care for his family, one who responded to God s call upon his life with obedience. There was no room for him at the inn, yet he always knew to whom he belonged. Today we give thanks for the Josephs among us, migrating far from home when there is no choice, fiercely devoted to the ones they love, unwavering in their belief that there is room for all in the kingdom of God. On this third Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of Joseph, who knocks at the door, ready to take his place in God s kingdom. Sung Response: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to Thee, O Israel. 4

THE FIRST LESSON: Genesis 22:15-18 Pew Bible OT page 18 CAROL: (Seated) Lo, How a Rose E er Blooming Lo, how a Rose e er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse s lineage coming, as those of old have sung. It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, When half spent was the night. Isaiah twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind; With Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind. To show God s love aright, she bore to us a Savior, When half spent was the night. O flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, Dispel in glorious splendor the darkness everywhere. True man yet very God, from sin and death now save us, And share our every load. THE SECOND LESSON: Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 Pew Bible OT page 638 ANTHEM: 8:00 I Saw a Maiden The Wesley Choir, Neal Hamlin conducting Arr. Edgar Pettman 9:30/11:00 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Arr. Gustav Holst The Cathedral Choir, Neal Hamlin conducting THE THIRD LESSON: Isaiah 11:1-9 Pew Bible OT page 640 5

*CAROL: (Standing) The First Nowell arr. Willcocks All sing: The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! Choir: All sing: Choir: All sing: They look-ed up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! This star drew nigh to the northwest; O er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heav n and earth of naught, And with his blood all people hath bought: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! 6

THE FOURTH LESSON: Luke 2: 1-7 Pew Bible NT page 58 ANTHEM: Away in a Manger W. J. Kirkpatrick, arr. Willcocks CAROL: (Seated) O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth! How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given; So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. O Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord, Emmanuel! MEDITATION Rev. Dr. Cathy Johns OFFERTORY: Greensleeves Richard Purvis THE FIFTH LESSON: Luke 2: 8-16 Pew Bible NT page 58 ANTHEM: 8:00 Ding Dong! Merrily on High Arr. *CAROL: (Standing) Angels We have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o er the plains, And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains. (Refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo! Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heavenly song? (Refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo! Come to Bethlehem and see Christ whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. (Refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo! See him in a manger laid, whom the choirs of angels praise; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while our hearts in love we raise. (Refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo!
