RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS On May 5th Grade 2 students from St. Bernard School and Grade 2 CCD students both Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church received the sacrament of First Holy Communion. Congratulations to all! REFLECT Happy Trinity Sunday! In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus declare together all three Persons of the Trinity. "Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." When we speak of the Trinity, two different theological words are sometimes used: immanent and economic. The immanent Trinity is the life of the three Persons within themselves, the inner harmonious relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. We see this in the Gospels when Jesus speaks of his Father and promises to send the Holy Spirit. The term "economic" has its roots in the Greek word oikonomia, roughly meaning "household management." The economic Trinity is our three-personed God's relationship with creation; it is creation and redemption and ongoing relationship with us. Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to imitate God's immanence by giving and receiving love with one another in community. However, this is not limited only to those close to us, though that's where love often starts. We also imitate the economy of God when we go out, when we extend our love and care in a life-giving way. "Go therefore?" Every believer is sent on mission. Every believer is invited to follow Jesus and the Apostles "to the nations," to the margins, to the people who require a little extra reach. This could be a distant relative, the residents of your local homeless shelter or even the forgotten neighbor next door! When we love well, we create something beautiful-a relationship, a holy moment, a foretaste of heaven. This Trinity Sunday, take some time to examine the relationships in your life. How well do you love those nearest to you? How well do you reach out to those farther away? How are you creating something beautiful? RAFFLE TICKETS St. Bernard parishioners: Be sure to sell your raffle tickets to support our St. Jeanne Jugan Parish Carnival. There is a chance to win some FANTASTIC prizes!! And please remember that all raffle tickets (both sold and unsold) should be returned to St. Bernard Church as soon as possible to ensure that they are entered into this year s drawing! If you have sold (or purchased) all of your assigned tickets and would like additional tickets, please contact the rectory. 2018 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL When you contribute to any charitable effort, you will want to be assured that the funds received are being used wisely. This includes your gift to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, which supports the ministries and outreach of the Archdiocese of Hartford and its Parishes. Of the many things funded by the Appeal, the Enfield Food Shelf, Felician Sisters Adult Day Care, Little Sisters of the Poor, and St. Vincent depaul Society right here in our own town, received funding from the Appeal s Vicariate Outreach Program. This truly makes a big difference in the lives of many local residents and neighbors. Please visit the Appeal website at www.archdioceseofhartford.org to learn more or make your gift today. From Fr. Golas: The St. Jeanne Jugan Parish Carnival will take place at St. Bernard Church on May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm. It is a good opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the activities, events and special food. This is also a fundraiser; all proceeds from the Carnival, Raffle and Sponsors will be put into the St. Jeanne Jugan operating checkbook to pay for budgeted expenses and at times, additional unforeseen repairs. Thank you for supporting this year s Parish Carnival. I ll see you there!

St. Bernard School & Little Angels Pre-School St. Bernard School Answers the Call to Help Save the Planet Environmental degradation, global warming, consumerism, and irresponsible development are the issues that Pope Francis is calling all the people of the world to take swift and unified global action to address and rectify. His second encyclical, entitled Laudato si, mi Signore which means praise be to you, my Lord, is sweeping in scope and based on an Umbrian phrase from St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. Hartford s Archbishop Leonard Blair has said that Laudato si is an urgent reminder that care for our common home is a profound moral responsibility, shared by us all. As a result, the Hartford Archdiocese is promoting the Laudato Si Challenge as a way for Catholic schools to join in the efforts of prayer, learning, and acting upon the Pope s message. St. Bernard s School accepted this challenge wholeheartedly... and not just one of the challenges, but all four! Faculty team captains Michelle Lavoie and Deborah Grout called upon their experiences as Girl Scout leaders to help come up with some ideas for meeting the challenges. In addition to many classroom activities, the four official challenges that the school undertook were: 1. DAILY ACTIONS TO CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME - Several teachers have incorporated planting activities into their science lessons over the years. In answer to the desire to have protected garden areas, alumnus Peter Landry is installing raised keyhole garden beds with composting capabilities. 2. CULTIVATE CREATION AND SPARK THE SENSE OF AWE - Realizing that the student s relationship with nature is important, the teachers have increased their dedication to environmental education. In order to create a shaded outdoor classroom, 8th grader Katelyn Birdsey adopted the work of adding benches to an existing outdoor pavilion. 3. BE A PART OF THE WHOLE HUMAN FAMILY - St. Bernard School has been holding food drives for the local community for years. To expand their focus and learn how to feed those in our global community, the 8th graders chose to support Heifer International, which provides livestock to poor families around the world, giving them access to food and an income for years to come. 4. COMMUNICATING BEAUTY IN GOD S CREATION - The students have been creating artwork inspired by the beauty in nature throughout the year. A team of people from the Archdiocese visited St. Bernard s on May 8th. After touring the school and witnessing the work done by the students, Dr. Michael Griffin, Superintendent of Schools, presented a plaque to principal Charlene Mongillo for the faithful integration of the teachings of Laudato Si into the curriculum, and for the successful completion of the Laudado Si challenge. An example of students' artwork, depicting the beauty of nature. The outdoor classroom at St. Bernard School, built and updated by students. Kindergarteners and 1st grade students are excited as they release their butterflies! 2nd graders show off their creations made from recycled material.

GREAT GARDENING! It s time again for the St. Joseph s and Little Sisters of the Poor vegetable garden. Last year s garden was so bountiful that we were able to supply the St. Joseph s residents, Little Sisters of the Poor and the Felician Sisters with fresh vegetables throughout the summer and into the fall and were able to donate a plethora of vegetables to the Enfield Loaves and Fishes Program. Now that s great gardening! St. Jeanne Jugan parishioners are needed to help make a successful garden again this year. Volunteers are needed for rototilling, watering, and weeding throughout the summer. We are also looking for donations including vegetable plants and heavy-duty tomato cages. Monetary donations are always welcomed! Checks may be made payable to St. Jeanne Jugan Parish with the word Garden in the memo. Please contact Pat and Kevin Margolfo at 860-306-0495 for more information, to volunteer, or to schedule a donation drop-off. Let s make this year s garden another great garden!
