THE EXTRAORDINARY NAME OF JESUS By: Phillip Hayes And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. [Matthew 1:21] Extraordinary: Beyond what is usual, ordinary, regular, or established; exceptional in character, amount, extent, degree, etc.; remarkable. Jesus is the sweetest name I know and There s something about that name are two of my very favorite songs. I love the name of Jesus! I love to speak it and I love to hear it spoken or sung. Truly, the name of Jesus is the sweetest name I know, and there is definitely something about that name I call extraordinary. I often wonder if all Christians realize the importance of this very special name. During a recent teaching I was giving on the name of Jesus, a revelation began to immerge. I began to see the name of Jesus in a way I had never seen before. The revelation I was receiving burst into my mind like a brilliant spiritual light and I was speaking it as fast as I was receiving it. We try to record as many of our services as we can. However, this was one of the services we failed to record. Of all the messages I have preached this was the one I would have loved to hear myself. It was that powerful! I don t know if anyone in that service really received what was spoken, but I did. Please understand, I have always understood the importance of the name of Jesus. But this was different! I hope to convey the revelation I was Trumpet Messenger Page 1

given in this article; knowing all along that it cannot be understood unless the Holy Spirit reveals it. In Matthew chapter one verse twenty, we find an angel had appeared to Joseph in a dream saying, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. The angel then told him to call His name Jesus (Verse 21). The very first thing we find out about the name of Jesus is neither Joseph nor Mary named Him. His name came from God the Father by an angel! Make no mistake about it, the name of Jesus came from Heaven, not from the earth. It was not just an ordinary Hebrew name as many try to make us believe. No, this was a heavenly name! Not only was this name a heavenly name, the meaning of the name was foretold by the prophets. The name of Jesus had a meaning, a definition; it represented something! The Book of Matthew records one of these prophesies: Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us [Matthew 1:22-23]. Notice, this person would be born of a virgin and His name would be called Emmanuel which literally means God With Us! You might think, Why did they call Him Jesus, instead of Emmanuel? Is this a mistake? No! No mistake here! The prophesy was to define His name. His name would mean God With Us! Therefore, the name Jesus means, God With Us. Keep that in mind. This is very, very important! Most of the names given children today mean absolutely nothing but names in Old and New Testament times defined something about the person named. For instance, God changed Abrams name to Abraham. Abram Trumpet Messenger Page 2

meant high father but Abraham meant a father of many nations. God was making Abram a father of many nations so He changed his name to reflect the change in his life. According to Apostle Paul s letter to the Philippian church Jesus was given a Name above EVERY NAME! There is something about that name! There is another prophesy we need to see concerning the name that would be given the coming Messiah. It is found in Isaiah chapter nine, verse six: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Let s look at this prophecy carefully. First of all there should be no doubt it is about the Messiah or Christ that would come. It is important to understand that the prophesy is given to define what this person s name would mean. His name would not be Wonderful, or Counsellor, or Mighty God. These are titles defining His name, not names. Remember, God named the Messiah, the Christ: JESUS! As far as God is concerned, the name Jesus literally means: Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The prince of Peace and... God With Us! I don t really care what your Greek or Hebrew dictionaries say the name Jesus means. I m telling you what God says His Name means! Now, I want you to think about this. I have a question for you. When you speak the name of Jesus, what are you really saying? I m telling you the name of Jesus is not some ordinary name! It is a spiritual supernatural name! When you say Jesus, you are saying, God with us! Yes you are! You are manifesting the very presence of God when you speak His Name! Glory to God! Trumpet Messenger Page 3

Jesus! Mighty God! Everlasting Father! Prince of Peace! No wonder, we get goose bumps when that wonderful name is sung about! No wonder demons flee and sickness leaves when that Holy Name is declared in faith! It is the name of God! I know there are some misguided souls that would argue that God has a Hebrew name. Some say Jesus name is actually Yahshua, and God the Father s name is Yah, Yahweh or Allah. No, God named His Son Jesus. Jesus said, I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive [John 5:43]. Jesus is God the Father s only begotten son. Of course, He would have His Father s Name! Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved [Acts 4:12]. This is why no one can be saved apart from the Name of Jesus! It is the only name given! I realize there are millions and millions of people in the world that have a love for God but they are lost unless they acknowledge the Name of Jesus and all that it signifies. Remember, Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me [John 14:6]. As born again Christians, we believe in the Father and the Son. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son [1John 2:22]. We also believe there is a Holy Spirit, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one [1John 5:7]. I realize there are differences of interpretation concerning the Deity. Great is the mystery of God (See 1Tim. 3:16) and I can understand why there is some confusion. However, there is only One Name given that represents God, and that name is Jesus. Of this, you can be certain! Trumpet Messenger Page 4

Think about it! What name do you pray in? Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full [John 16:24]. Hitherto means up until now. Up to this point in their relationship with Jesus, the disciples had never prayed in the name of Jesus. Jesus is now giving them carta blanc to use His name! He is saying, you have never asked anything in my name yet, but now just ask, and you re going to receive. Verse twenty-three clarifies this, And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. This is powerful! Whatever you ask the Father in my Name - the Father will give it to you! Don t you see? Jesus has given His disciples the legal right to use His Name! I like to look at this as a blank check Jesus has signed and given to me! Whatever I ask in His name! There is something about that name! There is much, much more. Look at these very familiar verses: And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover [Mark 16:17-18]. These supernatural acts can only be accomplished through the mighty name of Jesus. I want to take a moment here to tell you what happened in a revival some thirty years ago. I was in a meeting where another evangelist was preaching a week long revival. He was an older gentleman and was definitely old-school. His preaching was boring and I could hardly endure being in the meetings. However, I didn t want to dishonor the pastor so I endured it. The last night s service came and I was sure glad. Again, he preached a boring lifeless message. He testified that he and his wife had Trumpet Messenger Page 5

fasted breakfast that day and was expecting God to move in a great way. Although I was very young in the Lord at the time, I had been fasting for weeks on end; and to me what he said was laughable. After he preached, he asked if there was anyone there that had one leg shorter than the other. Well, there certainly was! A lady that was a regular in the church that everyone knew had one leg shorter than the other. I thought, Boy he has sure messed up! The lady came forward. He pulled two chairs up and sat on one and asked the lady to sit in the other chair facing him. Then, to my surprise he asked for the pastor and myself to come up as he wanted us to see a miracle. I positioned myself where I could clearly see between the evangelist and the lady. The pastor stood on the other side. The evangelist asked the lady to stretch her legs toward him. He then took both her legs by the ankle and you could clearly see a good 3 inch difference between them. He then asked for the pastor and myself to kneel down where we could clearly see. This is what he said, I am going to show you the power of Jesus Name! He said, In the name of the Father, nothing happened. He said, In the name of the Son, nothing. In the name of the Holy Ghost, nothing. Then he said, Watch. In the name of Jesus Christ! God is my witness! When that old boring evangelist said In the name of Jesus Christ that leg instantly grew to the same length as the other! I know my jaw dropped and I think the pastor almost fainted! I saw it with my own eyes! It was no trick! We had witnessed a real miracle and it was only done in the name of Jesus! Glory to God! I get excited every time I think about that night! I was convinced then and I am more convinced today that the Name of Jesus when spoken in faith will heal and deliver! Jesus Christ is the same! Trumpet Messenger Page 6

Remember, Jesus said All power in heaven and in earth has been given unto me. My friends, All Power or All Authority is in Jesus! It is released and manifested when the name of Jesus is spoken in faith. I said previously that the name of Jesus will manifest the presence of God. Let me settle this in your mind with these two verses: Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven [Matthew 18:19]. If we leave this verse alone and fail to read or quote the next verse we omit the very reason or secret as to why the promises in this verse will be done. There is only one way these promises will come to pass in your life! Here is the secret: For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them [Matthew 18:20]. There it is! Jesus said, IN MY NAME! When you gather in His Name! God is manifested! He is in the midst! Then, whatever you shall agree on shall be done of the Father! I don t want to fail in emphasizing the importance of His Great Name. Remember, He got His name from His Father! He inherited it just as in most cultures; you inherit your parent s name. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to Trumpet Messenger Page 7

him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him [Hebrews 1:1-6]. Jesus inherited a more excellent name than they! His name is greater than Michael or Gabriel or any other angel. Jesus is the Brightness of God s Glory and the Expressed (EXACT) Image of God s Person. Angels worship Him! Jesus is His Name! Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father [Philippians 2:9-11]. I hope you are shouting with me! These verses should be setting your soul on fire! Jesus has been exalted! He has a Name above every name! Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Atheists, Angels, creatures in hell, creatures in the earth will bow to the name of Jesus! Yes they will! There is no other name given! Settle this in your heart! Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved [Acts 4:12]. Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come [Ephesians 1:20-21]. The emphasis is there is a NAME that is ABOVE EVERY NAME THAT IS NAMED not only in this world but also in the one to come. Jesus is an Eternal Name! Every Christian must come to the knowledge that whatever we do, must be done in the Name of Jesus. Everything! And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all Trumpet Messenger Page 8

in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him [Colossians 3:17]. And again, Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ [Ephesians 5:20]. Do you realize, you can only be sanctified and justified in His Name? And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God [1Corinthians 6:11]. Listen friends, we are also commanded to believe on the name of Jesus! And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment [1John 3:23]. There is a prayer of faith! It is not done in the name of the Father, or the Son or the Holy Ghost. No, it is done in the Name of Jesus! Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord [James 5:14]. There it is! Everything the early church believers did, they did it in the Name of Jesus! The Name of Jesus must be spoken in faith. You must believe His Name is all the Bible teaches it is. I believe if you believe the Name of Jesus will manifest God, it will, if it is spoken in faith. Here are two examples: Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk [Acts 3:6]. I know most of you have read this many times. However, let me point out what actually took place. When Peter prayed for this man that had been lame since he was born, nothing happened. He didn t jump up and start shouting! But Peter had so much faith in the Name of Jesus verse seven says, he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. That is faith in not only what he had but faith in Jesus Name for it is the Name of Jesus that raised this lame Trumpet Messenger Page 9

man up! After the man began leaping and running a great crowd began to gather around. This was Peter s chance to glorify the Name of Jesus. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? [Acts 3:12]. Peter wanted them to know it was not because of his holiness that the man was healed. In verse sixteen Peter explains how the man was healed: And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. There it is! Not only was the miracle performed in the Name of Jesus, but also THROUGH FAITH IN HIS NAME! Peter had spoken the Name but the man didn t react. He had so much faith in the Name of Jesus that Peter just reached down and jerked the man up. When this happened, the man s ankle bones gained strength and he received his miracle. This miracle caused such a commotion among the religious leaders of that day; they commanded them to not SPEAK or TEACH in the Name of Jesus (Acts 4:11,18). An area of controversy within the church I feel I should cover is water baptism. Many feel it is not necessary to be water baptized at all, while others argue what is to be said over one who is being baptized. Those who argue that water baptism is un-necessary contend we are saved by faith and not by works (Eph. 2:8, 9). In other words, if water baptism was part of our salvation, it would be by works, not by grace. Others argue against this teaching saying, water baptism was commanded by Jesus and His Apostles. Jesus was also baptized in water by John as our example to follow. They also point to First Peter chapter 3, verse twenty-one which says, The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not Trumpet Messenger Page 10

the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Water baptism also saves us! However, the most heated debate is over a few verses found in Matthew s Gospel chapter twenty-eight verse nineteen: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. If one is to simply take this single verse and completely ignore scores of other verses, one would conclude that Jesus meant this statement to be a formula to be said over a person when they are water baptized. Given the few scriptures we have read concerning the Name of Jesus, this would make no sense at all. Did Jesus really mean for His disciples to use this statement as a formula for water baptism? The answer is No and it is derived from the Bible itself. First of all verse eighteen says, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Jesus states very clearly He has ALL POWER IN HEAVEN AND IN EARTH! The word power is also translated AUTHORITY. There is no other authority than the Name of Jesus. We have already found the Name of Jesus is the ONLY NAME given and is above every name. I believe the Apostles clearly understood this! The Apostle Peter preached the very first Gospel message on the day of Pentecost. As the other Apostles stood with him, this is what he commanded: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost [Acts 2:38]. If the Apostles thought Jesus meant for them to baptize people saying, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost they would have obeyed Him without question! Trumpet Messenger Page 11

They knew the Name of Jesus was the Name to be used in everything including water baptism. Jesus was quoted by Matthew and I believe Matthew wrote down exactly what Jesus said. There is no contradiction between Matthew 28:19 and Acts 2:38. Peter and all the Apostles did exactly what Jesus said. They commanded and baptized everyone in THE NAME of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. They understood the Name of Jesus represented the entire Godhead! This is why in every instance found in scripture every new convert was baptized in the Name of Jesus! Nowhere in all the Bible, or in early church history was anyone baptized using Matthew 28:19 as a formula. A pastor once told me he baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. I asked him why he didn t baptize in the name of Jesus as this is what Jesus was really instructing us to do. He said, I believe when I baptize someone repeating what Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 that I am baptizing in Jesus Name. This pastor understood what Jesus said but for whatever reason chose to quote a verse that represented the Name, rather than speaking the Name! Friends, we heal the sick in the Name of Jesus. We cast out devils in the Name of Jesus. We call on the Name of Jesus to save us. We pray over our food and for all our needs to be met in Jesus Name. Why in the world would anyone refuse to baptize or to be baptized in Jesus name? Yes, there is something about that Extraordinary Name! Everything I do, I do it all in the Name of Jesus.
