Sermon Notes July 2, 2017 I Am: The Light of the World John 8:12 Big Idea: Application:

Discussion Questions Were you scared of the dark as a child? What frightened you about the darkness? What are some examples of the darkness in our world today? Does it still frighten you? Jesus said, I am the light of the world What did He mean by that statement? What are the implications of that statement for our lives? Bible Reading Plan Read Matthew 5:13-16. What is our role in this battle between light and darkness? How has Jesus been a light for you? How can you now be a light for others? Which of your friends and family needs to have the light of Jesus invade the darkness of their lives? What can you do this week to shine for them? 2016-17 Bible Reading Plan OT, NT & Poetry: Week 78 Monday Isaiah 22-23 John 1:1-18 Psalm 102:1-11 Tuesday Isaiah 24-25 John 1:19-28 Psalm 102:12-28 Wednesday Isaiah 26-27 John 1:29-42 Psalm 103:1-9 Thursday Isaiah 28-29 John 1:43-2:12 Psalm 103:10-22 Friday Isaiah 30 John 2:13-25 Psalm 104:1-15

Monday When the Lights Went Out By Kel Cunard I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12 It is never accused of being a quiet and sleepy town, but tensions were particularly high in New York City during the summer of 1977. A nationwide economic downturn had devastated the metropolitan area and fear continued to grip the populace as the Son of Sam murders remained unsolved. The pressure built on the night of July 13 as the northeast experienced a brutal heat wave and summer storms caused lightning strikes that led to one of the largest blackouts in history. The lights went out in the city that never sleeps. Over ten million people were without power and normal life came to a halt in the darkness. Play was suspended in the bottom of the sixth at Shea Stadium with the Mets down 2-1 to the Chicago Cubs. Beneath the city, four thousand people had to be evacuated from the subway system while chaos reigned on the streets above. By the time power was restored the next day, over 1,600 stores were damaged in rioting and looting, firemen had responded to over 1,000 fires and almost 4,000 people had been arrested. What the ConEd power company called "an act of God" led to an outbreak of godless behavior in the darkened streets of our largest city. Darkness has a way of enabling the worst in us. In our efforts to satisfy the flesh, we even seek out the cover of darkness. But sin is revealed and darkness is destroyed in the presence of light. Jesus declared, I am the light of the world. (John 8:12) As John wrote about Christ s entry into the world, he wrote, In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5) And as Jesus conversed with Nicodemus under the cover of darkness, He stated, And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. (John 3:19-20) In the brightness of Jesus Christ, we see our sinfulness, and we know we have nowhere to hide. Life in the darkness is self-indulgent but scary. Life in the light is full of delightful denials. We are empowered by Christ to deny our flesh and embrace His truth, and there is nothing scary or destructive about it. Is your life marked by His light? Are there choices and behaviors present in your life that you would rather keep under the cover of darkness? Read Matthew 5:14-16. The light of Christ did not return with Him to Heaven. He has passed that light to us and we should live in a way that shines Jesus on those trapped in deep darkness. How do you think God would have you let your light shine before others?

Tuesday God and God Alone By George Volpe Know that the Lord, he is God! Psalm 100:3 In the movie Dances with Wolves, Lieutenant Dunbar, who develops a relationship with the local Indians, asks what they call him in the Indian language. They call him Dances with Wolves because they see him jumping around as if he is dancing with a lone wolf who befriends him. They named him based on a distinguishing aspect of his life. How do we name God? What distinguishes God from everything else? How do we arrange letters in a name to describe the eternal God? Is there one characteristic that adequately describes God? I would submit that it is not possible to describe all of who God is if we all were to write until we take our last breath. Part of this insurmountable task is that we do not know everything there is to know about God. But from the beginning of time, He has revealed enough of Himself to us in just enough detail so that our tiny finite minds can handle it. God made us, He loves us, He provides for us, and He is always present with us. He knew us before He brought us into existence. He knows we need to know Him, and He wants us to know Him. That s one of the reasons why every single name of God we find in scripture is so important. If we accomplish anything in this life, it must be that we know God and develop a growing relationship with Him. When Jesus said Before Abraham was, I am. (John 8:58) He was saying He was God, the I AM of the Old Testament. The Jews of Jesus day fully recognized the connection. Here is someone different from all other existence. I am, and there is none beside me. (Isaiah 45:6) Here is someone who exists outside the realm of time. I AM demonstrates eternity encompassing past, present and future. Here is independent and unconditional existence deriving everything else. This is the perfectly holy, completely unique Creator of all. Here is the One upon whom everything depends. No one but God can say they are what they always were, or they will always be as they are now. Unlike God we have a beginning. We are changeable, dependent, delicate, corruptible, exhaustible, finite, and not in control of much of anything. We do not know about tomorrow or even how this day will end. We do not originate life or anything else, in spite of what the so-called scientists tell you. By the grace of God man can do amazing things. But no created being can be compared to God. He is the One who is, the I AM. He is self-existent, selfsufficient, all-sufficient and inexhaustible. Read Psalm 100.

Wednesday Direct or Ambient Lighting? By Amy Pilson But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. Psalms 73:28 When I started thinking about light, a memory came back to me. It was of a time when I was driving to Tallahassee. As I left town, it was dark. I didn t think anything of it and drove through town with no problems. When I started to near the outskirts of town where traffic was much lighter and street lights were further apart, I felt like it was getting darker. The further I went, the darker it got. It wasn t too much longer and I realized that I didn t have my lights on! In thinking about Jesus as the Light of the world, I began to draw some analogies with the experience I had. See, when I was in town where there were plenty of street lights and lots of other cars around me with lights on, I could see ok. I was functioning off the light that they emitted. When I got further away from those external light sources, I couldn t function quite as well. I think this is true for many people in their spiritual lives. There have been times in my life when I wasn t as close to God as I should have been or would have liked to have been. In many ways, I was drawing my spiritual food or strength from the other Christians that I was around. I d let what I got on Sunday be what carried me through the week. And if I missed out on that, I began to find myself unable to function in my faith as well. Challenges that came my way hit me harder and took longer to recover from. I didn t have my internal light turned on or not turned up enough. We all know that the light is the brightest at its source. The closer we are to that source the more our lives will be illuminated and the better we will be able to see God s hand in our circumstances. Our focus can be properly directed because there aren t as many shadows where the enemy can distract us. Sometimes God will give us just enough light for the step we are on, but we need to be close to Him for it to be effective. James 4:8 says, Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. And Hebrews 7:19 tells us that we draw near to God through the hope that Christ s covenant provides for us through faith in believing He is who He says He is and that He rewards those who seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6) Let us draw near to Him it s a well-lit and safe place for us to be.

Thursday Walking Toward the Light By George Volpe I am the light of the world. John 8:12 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (John 1, 4, 5, 9) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. (Romans 1:19) We ve all seen or heard of people lost in caves. Without any light, the situation is almost hopeless. But if they choose to use it, there is enough light in one candle for someone to navigate in total darkness. And what are they looking for? More light. The appearance of light means that there is an opening above that might well save their life. Would you move toward the light? Why did Jesus say, I am the light of the world? We have light every day when the sun comes up. What light is Jesus speaking of? God places within every man a very special light, a way of knowing that there is a God, that to know Him is to know the truth, and that life is meant to be lived with Him. This light may at first be dim, but it is there. Many people choose to ignore the light God has given them, or they try to cover it with more darkness. But continued rebellion against the light only darkens understanding and drives a man away from the truth, away from God. To fight against the light of life is to drive one s heart inward toward self, mistaking selfishness for pleasure, and rebellion for strength. The story of that life spells success to the world until the day comes when an account must be given for the heart s response to the Light, and the brilliant beams of God s truth and justice expose that life against the message God has declared since the beginning of time. Should a person choose to move toward the light God has given, the scales of darkness fall away as God s illumination reveals the truth. The one who continues to yearn for the Light will understand what it means to walk in the light. Jesus is the Light who opens the eyes of our spirit and understanding so that we may know God and have a personal relationship with Him. He is the light so desperately needed by a world lost in the dark cave of sin, unwilling to admit they are lost, or to follow the way out. Those who come to Jesus will walk out of darkness and into the true light of life.

Friday Live in the Light By Kel Cunard God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5 Parents often find themselves at the intersection of affection and anger. When our child s lies threaten our trust, the depth of our love for them amplifies the level of our rage. Author Paul Tripp tells the story of permitting his teenage son to spend the weekend at a friend s house. All seemed well until a phone call from the friend s mother let Paul know his son had lied. The friend s conscience had gotten the better of him, and he confessed the whole plot to his mom. After Paul told his wife about their son's deception, Paul said: Luella could feel my anger, and she said, 'I think you need to pray.' I said, 'I don't think I can pray for him right now.' She said, 'I didn't mean for you to pray for him; I think you need to pray for you.' I went to my bedroom to pray for God's help, and it hit me that, because of his love, God had already begun a work of rescue in my son's life. God was the one who pressed in on the conscience of my son's friend, causing him to confess to his mom. God was the one who gave her the courage to make that difficult call to me. And God was the one giving me time to get a hold of myself before my son came home. Now, rather than wanting to rip into my son, I wanted to be part of what this God of grace was doing in this moment of rebellion, deception, hurt, and disappointment. When his son returned home, Paul pulled him aside for a talk. "Do you ever think about how much God loves you?" he asked his son. "Sometimes," he answered. "Do you ever think how much God's grace operates in your life every day?" His son looked up but didn't speak. Paul continued, "Do you know how much God's grace was working in your life even this weekend?" "Who told you?" his son asked. Paul replied, "You have lived your life in the light. You've made good choices. You've been an easy son to parent, but this weekend you took a step toward the darkness. You can live in the darkness if you want. You can learn to lie and deceive. You can use your friends as your cover You can step over God's boundaries. Or you can determine to live in God's light. I'm pleading with you: don't live in the darkness; live in the light." As Paul turned to walk away, he heard a voice behind him. Dad, don t go. Through tear filled eyes, the son looked to his father and said, Dad, I want to live in the light, but it s so hard. Will you help me? Read 1 John 1:5-10. We long for the people we love to live in the light, but sometimes we find ourselves at the intersection of affection and anger and we don t know which way to turn. In those moments, remember the grace God has shown you, and loving, prayerfully and truthfully call them to live in the light.

Weekend The Good Shepherd By Kel Cunard I am the good shepherd. John 10:14 Jesus talked a lot about sheep and shepherds. Sheep were vital for life in ancient Israel. They provided food, clothing and wealth, but their essentialness didn t elevate their intellect. Sheep resist the leading of their shepherd and seem to revel in finding new ways to put their lives at risk. Sheep are some of God s dumbest creatures In Christ s time, there were plenty of shepherds, but few were good. Shepherds who would watch the sheep for personal gain were a dime a dozen. They would tend the flock so long as it didn t cost them anything, but the moment their role proved costly, they disappeared. As Jesus unfolded His purpose to the world, He delivered a powerful declaration of His role in our lives. Read John 10:1-21. We would like to think Jesus was calling us to be better shepherds, for us to be courageous and sacrificial, but we are the sheep in this story. We are the dim creatures with a penchant for finding trouble. We are the ones in need of a shepherd, and praise God He gave us a Good one. Join us this Sunday as we embrace the protection of our Good Shepherd. Prepare for Worship As you prepare for worship this morning, meditate on Psalm 42. Where does your hope come from in times of trouble? God is with His children even when they feel He is silent. Seek Him with praise and thanksgiving. Worship Him with gladness this morning. Pray for the World: The Netherlands The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe, and over twenty percent of the country is below sea level. Four percent of the population is Evangelical Christian. Even though there has been a decline in believers, there are still signs of hope. You can pray for the Netherlands by praying for growth in the number and strength of churches, and unity among the churches involved in ministry. (Taken from operationworld.org)
