Grade: Preschool Jesus was teaching in the synagogue on a Sabbath, or day of worship. There was a woman who could not walk straight. She was bent over when she walked. She had been like this for eighteen years. When Jesus saw her, he stopped teaching. He called to her and said, Woman, you are freed from having to walk bent over. He laid his hands upon her, and instantly she stood up straight. She praised God! But the ruler of the synagogue said to the crowd that Jesus should not have healed on the Sabbath, because healing is a type of work, and we are not supposed to work on the Sabbath. Jesus said, If you have an animal who needs water, don t you untie it and lead it to water? He then explained that healing is from God, and that the woman should not have to wait even one more day to receive healing. The people were so happy to hear these words of Jesus! 1. A woman came looking for Jesus. She had a problem, what was it? 2. What did Jesus do? 3. The man in charge said Jesus should not have healed the woman. He said it was work, and we are not to work on God s holy day, or Sabbath. 4. Jesus asked, If anyone had an animal who needed water, wouldn t you take care of the animal right then? 5. Do you have a pet? Do you tell it to wait when it needs water? 6. Jesus healed the woman because healing is a good thing. 7. When someone is sick, we pray for them.

Grade: K-2 1. A synagogue is a place of learning, where Jewish people go on their Sabbath. Their Sabbath is on Saturday, and ours is on Sunday. 2. What was Jesus doing when the story begins? 3. Did the woman speak to Jesus? 4. What did Jesus say to her? 5. What happened then? 6. The ruler of the synagogue didn t like what Jesus did. Why? 7. Do you have any pets, or know someone that does? 8. If a pet was stuck in a hole, or needed any kind of help, would you help them, or tell them you d take care of them another day? Jesus told the ruler of the synagogue that it was not wrong to heal on the Sabbath, because healing is good, and comes from God. We can pray for ourselves and those we know, who need healing. Jesus was teaching in the synagogue on a Sabbath, or day of worship. There was a woman who could not walk straight. She was bent over when she walked. She had been like this for eighteen years. He then explained that healing is from God, and that the woman should not have to wait even one more day to receive healing. The people were so happy to hear these words of Jesus!

Grade: 3-5 Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, Woman, you are freed from your infirmity. And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day. Then the Lord answered him, You hypocrite! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day? As Jesus said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. The sacrament of Holy Unction, or Holy Oil, is the sacrament of healing and forgiveness. Holy Unction is oil mixed with wine that the priest blesses to heal us both body and soul. When this sacrament is performed, as many of the faithful as possible are gathered to participate in the prayers. On Wednesday of Holy Week, in some traditions, the sacrament of Holy Unction is performed and people are anointed for the spiritual, physical and mental healing. The priest anoints the faithful on the forehead and hands as shown in this picture. 1. Where is Jesus in this gospel? 2. What is a synagogue? What do people do there? 3. What is Jesus doing in the synagogue? 4. What does this tell us about Jesus? 4. If work wasn t supposed to be done on the Sabbath why would people take their animals to get water on that day? 5. How is Jesus healing the woman the same type of action? 6. How does God take care of you the way a person might take care of a pet? What is the Sabbath? 3. Why can t work be done on the Sabbath? 4. what work does Jesus say many people do on the Sabbath? 5. Why do you think watering cattle is acceptable on the Sabbath? Do you think the exception for watering cattle is a good one? Why or why not? The sacrament of Holy Unction, or Holy Oil, is the sacrament of healing and forgiveness. Holy Unction is oil mixed with wine that the priest blesses to heal us both body and soul. At the time of Jesus olive oil was used for healing. You may remember the story of the Good Samaritan and how he poured oil into the wounds of the beaten man. It is still so today. What do you put on a scrape or cut after you wash it? Check the ingredients list next time. Oil is a symbol of healing. Photo and sidebar text on Holy Unction courtesy of the OCEC from the publication Teaching Pics, available through the Archdiocese.

What was her reaction? 3. How does the ruler of the synagogue react to her healing? 4. Why do you think he reacts this way? What good things does this tell us about him? What is problematic about his reaction? 5. What rules do we have in the Orthodox church? 6. When do we sometimes react the way this ruler did when people break rules? Why do you think we do that? 7. What can we do to learn how to react like the woman did? The sacrament of Holy Unction, or Holy Oil, is the sacrament of healing and forgiveness.
