Saint Pius X S Church of Under the pastoral care of the Religious Community of the Alagad Ni Maria (Disciples of Mary) A Roman Catholic Faith Community Founded in 1954 Renovated 2013 Journal of Events January 2018 May 2018 Social Events Family Events Liturgical Services Spiritual Programs Adult Faith Formation Youth Activities And much more! To Renew All Things in Christ

Dear Parishioners, The closing of one year and the dawning of another is an excellent time to take a moment to reflect on the positives and negatives of the past year and to think about how to multiply the positives in the new year. Recalling the negatives helps us to learn from our mistakes so that we can do better; and remembering the positives focuses us on the good we have accomplished so that we can strive to do more good. Over fifty years ago, Martin Luther King had a dream of racial harmony. His dream was a clear vision of how he wanted people to treat each other. Not all of us are called to be leaders like King but, as Christians, we are all called to make a difference in the world. The Gospel of Matthew reminds us: For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Matthew 25:35-36 The Church of St. Pius X is a Christian community that strives to serve God through service to others in our many ministries and outreach programs listed in this Journal of Events. This year, as part of our Religious Education Program, we are commencing a new outreach program, Operation Cupid, for our lower grades. As part of this program, our children will write letters and messages of appreciation and collect snacks, toiletries and other items requested by United for the Troops. These letters, messages and items will be delivered to United for the Troops for distribution to our troops for Valentine s Day. I pray that our Lord and Savior is someone we turn to in our weak, joyful and painful moments as our rock, our shelter and our strength. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018 Prayerfully, Father Sebastian Pastor Page 1 492 Church of St. Pius X

PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY The Pastoral Care ministry reaches out to the elderly, homebound and hospitalized to embrace the vulnerable members of our parish and community. We bring communion to patients at White Plains Hospital. Visit people who are homebound to bring the Eucharist, visit, talk, sometimes drive to doctor visits. We also work with The Ambassador of Scarsdale, Assisted Living, visiting weekly and on Sundays, to bring the Eucharist and read Sunday Scriptures. Please contact Debra Lupardo-Belotti at 914-632- 1960, debralupardo@gmail.com), the Parish Office or speak to a priest. NEW OUTREACH MINISTRY OPERATION CUPID In January 2018, our Religious Education children (1st to 4th Grades) will be involved in Operation Cupid, an important community service to benefit the organization United for the Troops, whose mission is to support our soldiers who are deployed overseas. Children will send the troops care packages that contain Thank You cards, food and goods that the military does not provide to them. Their goal is to show our soldiers that we are proud of them and appreciate all of their efforts. 2019 MASS INTENTIONS Our 2019 Intention Book will be available from January 22 through February 18, 2018. To reserve Announced es, please fill out the Request Form and submit it to the rectory, or collection basket, with your check for $20 made payable to St. Pius X. We are using this procedure for convenience and to eliminate long lines. Each year, our weekend and Holy Day intentions fill up quickly, which results in a shortage of Weekend and Holy Day availability. In order to try to ensure availability throughout the year, starting in 2018 procedures are as follows: 1. Initially, each family will be limited to four (4) Individual intentions for Weekend and Holy Day es each calendar year. An unlimited number of intentions on weekdays, non-holidays and shared weekend es will be allowed on a first come, first served basis. 2. After February 18, 2018, families will be able to reserve any remaining Individual Weekend and Holy Day intentions. 3. intentions for 5pm Saturday and 12 noon Sunday the last weekend of each month are strictly for shared intentions. This ritual reminds us that our baptismal commitment means we are to be servants of one another. Veneration of the Cross: As part of our observance of Good Friday, we venerate the cross on which Christ died. The veneration challenges us to be willing to accept the cross, too, for it is the only way to resurrection. Through Baptism, we shared in Christ s death that we might come to new life. Every year, we are called to deepen our identification with his cross and resurrection. Waters of Baptism: The core of our celebration of the Easter Vigil is the Baptism of the elect. As we share in their joy on this holy night, we are all called to renew our own baptismal promises, and to live in the joy of life in the Risen One. 492 Church of St. Pius X Page 4

TENEBRAE SERVICE, MARCH 30 GOOD FRIDAY A worship service of Tenebrae, from the Latin word for shadows or darkness, has been observed in the Church since the fourth century, on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. Tenebrae is a service which traces the events of Christ s passion. We ponder the cost of our salvation by meditating on the depth of Christ s suffering, his crucifixion, death and burial. As the service unfolds, all candles and lights in the Church are extinguished until only one candle remains. When the last candle is carried out of the church and complete darkness fills the church, the assembly disperses in silence.
