The month of September is widely known as back to school month. A month of new beginnings, when students of all ages embark on a ten month journey, which will see them through countless milestones. However, this September also marks another great milestone; the canonization of Mother Teresa. On September 4th, 2016 Pope Francis, by the Rite of Canonization, declared Mother Teresa a Saint. Someone who is with God and a worthy example to all of what it means to follow Christ. However, Mother Teresa did not become a saint on that day. Sainthood does not happen overnight, or by proclamation, rather, her journey to sainthood started with her birth, the same time it started for each of us. As Pope Francis says, to be saints is not a privilege for the few, but a vocation for everyone. Truly, it is a path we all walk; the path to holiness. Sometimes we are running down the path and sometimes we are barely crawling, but we are, nonetheless, on it. Fortunately, we can look to other great people who have also walked this route; Saints of the church. Holy men and women who made mistakes, but teach us over and over again that holiness is not about being free of mistakes, but rather about, continuously and actively, making the decision to continue on this path to sainthood despite them. So in this month of new beginnings let us learn from all the Saints, to treat each day like a new beginning, a new opportunity to travel our own path to holiness. 7
