New Hand-Crafted Classical Confessionals UPDATE Our two new classical confessionals are scheduled to be installed the week of February 5 and will be blessed on Sunday February 11 after the 11:00 AM Healing & Anointing Mass. Hand-crafted from quarter sawn oak with walnut inlay, these spectacular confessionals truly give glory to Our Lord and the life-giving Sacrament of Reconciliation. We sincerely thank all who donated to our Chapel Preservation Fund and Confessional designated donations, which helped make this possible. God bless, The Friars of Marytown Treasures from our Tradition Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the fi rst of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. of St. Maximilian Excerpts from The Writings of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe Submitting to the will of God and its implementation, especially in what is contrary to the senses and even to a limited and fallible intelect, inflames one s love for God even more. The Sisters of the Benedictine Order of Perpetual Adoration were the original owners of the grounds today known as Marytown and they lived here until 1978 when the Franciscan order purchased it from them. After the International Eucharistic Congress in 1926, which took place at Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, George Cardinal Mundelein invited the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration from Clyde, Missouri to establish a permanent sanctuary of adoration. Perpetual Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament has taken place here since June 7, 1928. Another component of their spirituality included producing millions of Communion hosts every year. The photo taken at right was featured in a special Christianity issue of LIFE magazine on December 26, 1955, showing the sisters hard at work in their ministry. Thinking of Making a New Year Resolution? Why not consider committing one hour every week as a Eucharistic adorer? What better way to improve your spiritual well-being than to spend an hour of quiet time in the Marytown Chapel, in prayer and adoration with our Eucharistic Lord! If you re ready to make this commitment, please fi ll out a commitment card next to the hours chart in the rear of the Chapel. One of our Division Leaders will contact you with additional details. Thank you! coffee donuts & fell owship! Beginning Sunday February 4 all are welcome to gather for coffee, juice, donuts & fellowship in Founders Hall, following the 9:00am Mass. Come mingle with the Friars and fellow Mass-goers. We hope to see you there! Freewill offerings accepted
UPCOMING SHRINE EVENTS 2nd Annual M I Militia of the Immaculata (MI) Consecration Preparation Classes On January 27, Marytown will resume offering MI Consecration classes. Why Consider Marian Consecration? The spirit of the MI is the spirit of continual conversion. When lived in the spirit of willingness and humility, the Immaculata will elevate our natural gifts and inspire us to holiness and fruitful service within the Church. Registration is required. Please contact Deacon Tom Gaida at tom@kolbeshrine.org or 847-367-7800 ext. 246. Healing & Anointing Mass On Sunday February 11, Marytown will offer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The hoped-for effect is that, if it be God s will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
