August 5-6, 2017 Rahab Joshua 2, 6:22-27 Faith in God Emboldens Us Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Remind kids that it s okay to be scared sometimes. Being brave doesn t mean we can do anything, or that we ll always have things together. But when we do come across hard or scary situations, we can be emboldened by trusting in God and being faithful, like the woman from today s story, Rahab. Ask kids what their masks mean, and what they re going to do this week to get out of their comfort zone and be brave! At the end of large group, we ll be having an interactive response time where kids go up to the presentation area and get a red string to remind them to rely on God for bravery. You can be an example to your kids by going up and getting a string yourself.
GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. BRAVE MOVES It will probably be most fun to keep kids in one large group for this activity (If you have A LOT of kids, break into two groups, or even small groups, etc.) Make a circle with the kids in your group and play the first slide of the keynote (It s a continuous mix of fun songs.) Let one brave kid at a time go to the middle of the circle and model a dance move or silly action. The rest of the circle has to follow his/her lead, no matter what crazy dance move or silly action it is! When a new brave kid wants to go to the middle of the circle, they can go take the other kid s place and start doing a new dance move/action, and the rest of the circle follows their lead. Kids can choose whether or not they want to go to the middle of the circle. They don t have to go, but encourage everyone to go for it! TALK ABOUT IT What did it feel like being in the of the circle? Why is it hard to be brave sometimes? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.
Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Rahab (2) understand that faith in God emboldens us and gives us bravery. Why: We can t do everything on our own, but when we trust God to help us, he ll embolden us when we make hard decisions and scary choices. Tip: We all have trouble with faith sometimes. Let kids know that it s okay to feel scared; all we need to do is trust that God will be with us no matter what we face. REVIEW THE STORY 1. What surprised you about the story? 2. What do you think she felt when she hid the spies? 3. What would you do in her situation? 4. What happened after Rahab obeyed God and helped the spies? What did the spies do for her in return? 5. Has there ever been a time when you felt afraid? What was it like? 6. What s something that s hard for you to do on your own? 7. Was there a time when you had faith in God and it helped you? MAKE IT PERSONAL Tell everyone to close their eyes and think about their answer to this question: What brave thing would you do this week if you weren t afraid of anything? Emphasize that it should be something they could try to do in their own lives. Give some examples: Talking to someone at school who you usually stay away from Inviting a friend to church Talking about Jesus with your friends Trying an activity you ve never done before Give each kid a brave template, and have them write or draw the brave thing that they came up with. Encourage kids to share once they re done. As kids are working, pass around a hole puncher so kids can punch a hole through the dotted line circle at the top of the template. Then they can tie their red string (from Large Group) through the hole, and hang the image up somewhere at home! (See next page for an example image.) Continued on next page.
Extra time? You can do the large group bravery activity again!
Before Large Group, set a bin of red strings (with enough strings for each kid) near the presentation area. You ll need these for Response Time at the end of today s script. WELCOME AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Review Connect Time and actively worship. Notes: Here s a new music video we re watching during today s worship: O Taste and See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjdf KYZRxcM&list=RDzkVLdW3flng&index= 9 *Click to play intro music. Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club. We re so glad to have you here! You all had some pretty good dance moves in Connect Time.raise your hand if you got to in the middle of the circle! (Let kids respond.) Ask: Was was it like to go and dance in front of everybody else, and have them follow your lead? (Let a few kids respond.) Maybe it was nerve wracking or scary.or maybe you loved every second of it! Say: We all face things that can be kind of scary, when we have to be brave, even though it s hard. Let s watch a couple videos of others being brave! In this first video of some people flying a hang glider, it s not a person who s brave though...it s an animal! Video: Remove Cat Before Flight Say: That was pretty funny, and crazy! Can you imagine if you were that poor cat, accidentally being on a hang glider in the SKY?! Let s watch another video, this time, of a 96-year-old woman going skydiving!! Video: 96-Year-Old Betty Hipel s Skydive! Say: Woah, I hope I m that brave when I m 96, how about you guys? (Let kids respond.) You know what, whether it s skydiving, or dancing in front of a group of people, bravery can come across in a lot of ways.
BRAVERY INTRO: RAHAB RAHAB HIDES THE SPIES Say: A lot of times, something as simple as inviting a friend to church can be really scary. Why do you think something like that would be hard to do? (Let a kid a respond.) Yep, that s a really good reason. Sometimes, it s just because we don t know how it will turn out! Say: I d like to hear from some of you about a time you saw someone act brave. It could be a friend, a family member, anyone! (Let 1-2 kids respond depending on time.) Wow, thanks for sharing! (Image: Jericho) Today we re going to learn about a really brave woman from the Bible named Rahab. She lived in a city called Jericho. It was one of the first cities to ever be built, and it s still around today! Say: Now Rahab was not popular or cool, in fact a lot of people looked down on her. But God chose her to do something special, because God uses EVERYONE! It doesn t matter how old you are, or what people think of you, God wants to use you! But sometimes this can be scary. Say: Back then, the king of Jericho hated God s family, the Israelites. So when God sent two spies into Jericho, the king found out and was not happy. He wanted these spies found and killed. But God had a plan to rescue them, through Rahab! (Image: Spy) What do you think spies do? (Let a kid respond.) Yep, spies usually find out secret information, or they go on special missions. Say: These spies were on a special mission for God s family, the Israelites. They needed to find out the weaknesses of Jericho, because God was going to give the city to his people! Let s watch a quick clip to hear more about why these spies were there. Video: God s Story Clip / Joshua Becomes Leader Say: Rahab lived in that city, among all those people who hated the Israelites, and wanted nothing to do with them. And she did something amazing. Something that other people wouldn t do, because it was really dangerous...she hid the spies, Joshua and Caleb, on her roof when the king came looking for them!
GOD GIVES RAHAB BRAVERY REHAB TRUSTS GOD, AND WE CAN TOO Say: When the king asked her where the spies were, she said that they had run off down the road somewhere! She helped Joshua and Caleb, even though they were strangers, and it put her in danger. Ask: What do you think would have happened if the king found out she was lying? (Let a kid respond.) Yep, he would be angry, and he might even kill her. So why did she do it? (Let a kid respond.) Say: Yep, I think she knew it was the right thing to do, and she was obeying what God told her. She believed that God was powerful and good, and that no matter how hard or scary it might be, God would help her be brave. Say: Rahab wanted to help Joshua and Caleb escape out of the city, but first, she asked them to protect her when they came back and took the city. She had heard about how God saved his people from slavery, how he parted the Red Sea for them, and she knew God could protect her too! Say: So the spies told her that when they came back and took the city, they would protect Rahab and her family. They even swore an oath before God to do it. Oaths were pretty powerful back then, so they meant business. They only asked one thing of Rahab. Here s what they said: Slide: Joshua 2:17-19: The men said to her, You made us take an oath and make a promise, but we won t keep it unless you do what we say. When we enter the land, you must tie this bright red rope in your window. Bring your father and mother and everyone else in your family into your house. If anyone hurts someone who is in your house, it will be our fault, and you can hold us accountable. Ask: So basically, if Rahab hangs a red rope in her window, then she and her family will be protected! And that s exactly what she did. She trusted God, and that s what emboldened her to be brave. Say: Just like Rahab was brave in the face of death, we can be too. When we trust God, it s like he turns us into a superhero. Now I don t mean superpowers like flying or invisibility, like in movies. Those are just fake. For us, it can be things like kindness to a kid who s being picked on. Or bravery to ask a friend to come to church with you!
BRAVERY COMES IN MANY FORMS RESPONSE TIME Main Goal: Let kids actively respond to the Holy Spirit. PRAYER AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: Let s watch a music video about some kids who are really brave, but in a different way than you might normally think. Video: Children s Hospital Brave Music Video Ask: So, do you all think the kids in that video are brave? Why? (Let kids respond.) Yep, you re totally right. Bravery can come in a lot of forms. Sometimes it s something like fighting a disease, or standing up for what you believe in. Say: There will always be things that are hard or scary in our lives, but God gives us the strength to be brave and do things we couldn t do on our own! Say: Up here near the stage, we have red strings, kind of like the red rope that Rahab hung out her window. These are for you to remember that God gives you the bravery to face hard things, just like he did with Rahab. Make sure you keep your string, because you ll need it for Small Group! Say: I m going to play a worship video, and as we watch, you can come up here and get a string. As you get it, Think about a way that God has helped you be brave before, or a way that he will embolden you to be brave in the future! Make sure to keep it with you, because you ll need it for Small Group. Music Video: O Taste and See Say: Now it s time to celebrate God, and focus only on him. Here s a new video that s about celebrating how good God is to us, and remembering what he s done in our lives. Pray: You can have a kid come up to pray, or pray yourself. Ask God to help us rely on him for strength, and help us know in our hearts that he gives us all the bravery we need. *If you have time, you can play the extra worship video: Music Video: Brave Ones
