Hazzan only: Rosh Hodesh Siddur presentation BIRKAT HAKODESH (Sanctification of the Month) May it be your will, Adonay, our G-d and G-d of our fathers, that You begin for us this month for good and for blessing. May You give to us long life, a life of peace, a life of goodness, a life of blessing, a life of sustenance, a life of physical health, a life in which there is fear of heaven and fear of sin, a life in which there is no shame or humiliation; a life of wealth and honor, a life in which we love Torah and fear G-d; a life in which the L-rd fulfills the requests of our hearts for good. Amen. Selah. THE MOLAD (time announcement) Mi she'asah nissim (The One who Performed miracles) Hazzan only: The One who performed miracles for our forefathers and redeemed them from slavery to freedom, may He redeem us soon and gather in our exiles from the four corners of the earth; then all Israel shall be freed. Let us say, Amen. Hazzan then announces the time of Rosh Hodesh: Rosh Hodesh (Hebrew month) will be on the day (Hebrew day) that comes to us and to all Israel for good. 3

KIDDUSH LEVANAH (Sanctification of the Moon) Hazzan only: Halleluyah! Praise HaShem from the Heavens; praise Him in the heights. Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His legions. Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all bright stars. Praise Him, the most exalted of the heavens and the waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of HaShem, for He commanded and they were created. And He established them forever and ever, He issued a decree that will not change. Behold I am prepared and ready to perform the commandment to sanctify the moon. For the sake of the unification of the Holy One, Blessed is He, and His Presence, through Him Who is hidden and inscrutable [I pray] in the name of all Israel. Blessed are you, HaShem, our G-d, King of the Universe, Who with His utterance created heavens, and with the breath of His mouth all their legion. A decree and a schedule did He give them that they not alter their assigned task. They are joyous and glad to perform the will of their Owner the Worker of truth Whose work is truth. To the moon He said that it should renew itself as a crown of splendor for those borne [by Him] from the womb, those who are destined to renew themselves like it, and to glorify their Master for the name of His glorious kingdom. Blessed are you, HaShem, Who renews the months. Recite together allowed the following verses: Blessed is your Master; blessed is your Maker; blessed is your Owner; blessed is your Creator. Just as I dance toward you but cannot touch you, so may none of my enemies be able to touch me for evil. Let fall upon them fear and terror; at the greatness of Your arm, let them be still as stone As stone let them be still, at Your arm's greatness; terror and fear, 4

upon them let fall. David, King of Israel, is alive and enduring. 3 times Extend to others around you: Shalom Aleyhem (Peace upon you) The person who was greeted responds: Aleyhem Shalom (Upon you, Peace) Hazan only: May there be a good sign and a good fortune for us and for all Israel. And say Amen. Communal reading: The voice of the man I love! Here he comes, bounding over the mountains, skipping over the hills! My darling is like a gazelle or young stag. There he is, standing outside our wall, looking in through the windows, peering in through the lattice. (Shir Hashirim [Song of Songs] 2:8-9) A song of ascents: If I raise my eyes to the hills, from where will my help come? My help comes from Adonay, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip -your guardian is not asleep. No, the guardian of Isra'el never slumbers or sleeps. Adonay is your guardian; at your right hand Adonay provides you with shade the sun can't strike you during the day or even the moon at night. Adonay will guard you against all harm; he will guard your life. Adonay will guard your coming and going from now on and forever. (Tehilla [Psalm] 121) Halleluyah! Praise G-d in his holy place! Praise him in the heavenly dome of his power! Praise him for his mighty deeds! Praise him for his 5

surpassing greatness! Praise him with a blast on the shofar! Praise him with lute and lyre! Praise him with tambourines and dancing! Praise him with flutes and strings! Praise him with clanging cymbals! Praise him with loud crashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise ADONAI! Halleluyah! (Tehilla [Psalm] 150) Who is this, coming up from the desert, leaning on her darling? (Shir Hashirim [Song of Songs] 8:5) Hazzan only: May it be Your will my G-d and the G-d of my forefathers, to fill the flaw of the moon that there be no diminution in it. May the light of the moon be like the light of the sun and like the light of the seven days of Creation, as it was before it was diminished, as it is said: "The two great luminaries. And may there be fulfilled upon us the verse that is written: Afterwords, the people of Israel will repent and seek ADONAI their God and David their king (Hoshia 3:5) Amen. For the leader. Upon Nigunot (with stringed instruments). A psalm. A song: God, be gracious to us, and bless us. May he make his face shine toward us, (Selah) so that your way may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples give thanks to you, God; let the peoples give thanks to you, all of them. Let the nations be glad and shout for joy, for you will judge the peoples fairly and guide the nations on earth. (Selah) Let the peoples give thanks to you, G-d; let the peoples give thanks to you, all of them. The earth has yielded its harvest; may G-d, our G-d, bless us. May G-d continue to bless us, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him. (Tehilla [Psalm] 67) Recite together allowed עלינו ALEINU (Our Duty) It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to ascribe greatness to the Author of Creation, [For the nations bow to vanity and emptiness and pray 6

to a god which helps not] But we bend our knees, bow, and acknowledge our thanks before the King Who reigns over kings, the Holy One, Blessed is He. He stretches out heaven and establishes earth's foundation, the seat of His homage is in the heavens above and His powerful Presence is in the loftiest heights. He is our G-d and there is none other. True is our King, there is nothing beside Him, as it is written in His Torah: You are to know this day and take to your heart that Adonay is the only G-d in heaven above and on the earth below there is none other. Therefore we put our hope in You, Adonay our G-d, that we may soon see Your mighty splendor, to remove detestable idolatry from the earth, and false gods will be utterly cut off, to perfect the universe through the Almighty's sovereignty. Then all humanity will call upon Your Name, to turn all the earth's wicked toward You. For to You every knee must bow, every tongue should declare. Before You, L-rd, our G-d, they will bend every knee and cast themselves down and to the glory of Your Name they will render homage, and they will all accept upon themselves the yoke of Your kingship that You may reign over them soon and eternally. For the kingdom is Yours and You will reign for all eternity in glory as it is written in your Torah: L-rd shall reign for all eternity. And it is said: L-rd will be King over all the world, on that day L-rd will be One and His Name will be One. Mourners Kaddish if appropriate.
