SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 15, 2017 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE 8:00 & 10:30 Orchestra of Peace The Glories of Our God and King Come Thou Almighty King WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN When Christ s Appearing was Made Known 1. When Christ s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; But He who offers heav nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth. 2. The eastern sages saw from far And followed on his guiding star; By light their way to light they trod, And by their gifts confessed their God. 3. Within the Jordan s sacred flood The heav nly Lamb in meekness stood! That he, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse his people from their own. 4. For this his glad epiphany All glory unto Jesus be, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Ghost forevermore. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: The Spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me C: To preach good news to the poor. L: He has sent me C: To bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners L: To proclaim the year of the Lord s favor C: To comfort all who mourn and those who grieve. L: Merciful Heavenly Father: C: We confess the poverty of our lives and worship, the broken hearts and spirits of a people caught in sin, guilt, and death. We pray for freedom from the captivity of our sins, and release from the darkness of sin s guilt. Grant us forgiveness through Christ Jesus and teach us, who mourn our sins, to live holy and upright lives all our days. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the second Sunday after Epiphany is from Isaiah 49:5-7, pages 609-610: (5:00, 8:00 & 10:30) 5 And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength 6 he says:"it is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." 7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you." L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 10:30 Chancel Choir I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light THE EPISTLE READING is from I Corinthians 1:4-9, page 952: 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the first chapter, verses 29-42a, pages 886-887: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me. 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel. 32 And John bore witness: I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold, the Lamb of God! 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, What are you seeking? And they said to him, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying? 39 He said to them, Come and you will see. So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon the son of John. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was

incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY O Chief of Cities, Bethlehem 1. O chief of cities, Bethlehem, Of David s crown the fairest gem, But more to us than David s name, In you, as man, the Savior came. 2. The Wise Men, seeing Him so fair, Bow low before Him and with prayer Their treasured eastern gifts unfold Of incense, myrrh, and royal gold. 3. The golden tribute owns Him king But frankincense to God they bring, And last, prophetic sign, with myrrh They shadow forth His sepulcher. 4. Beyond the sun in splendor bright, Above you stands a wondrous light Proclaiming from the conscious skies That here in flesh the God-head lies. THE SERMON Simon Peter, Andrew s Brother (John 1:40-42) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack. Please pass cards down to center aisle. They will be collected immediately after the offering.
