SESSIONS 1 5 Advent path instructions is session begins the season of Advent. For the next five weeks, the spiritual practice will be connected to the lighting of an Advent path. Find a place to put the Advent path where it is visible for the children, but not in the way of other activities. You will need five candles; one should be larger than the others. If your church has a tradition of using specific colors for Advent candles, you may wish to follow that tradition. Battery-operated candles may be used if traditional candles are not an option. Place the candles in a curving path in the shape of an S, ending with the larger candle. Greenery can also be placed between the candles to shape the path. I bought some land and I have to go see it. Person 3 Sorry, I ve just gotten married. I can t come. SESSION 12 Story prompts Follow these instructions for use during Share the story. All kinds of people came to listen to Jesus. Some were people who were not following the laws of Moses or were causing harm to other people. Some religious leaders did not like this. ey grumbled and said, is man Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. Jesus answered the leaders with two stories: Imagine a shepherd who has one hundred sheep (place a large pile of dried beans in front of you). What if one of them gets lost? (Move one bean away from the pile.) e shepherd will leave the other sheep and hunt until the lost sheep is found. When the shepherd finds the sheep, he will carry it home, rejoicing (carefully pick up the one bean and place it back on the pile). When he gets home, he will call out to friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. It s like that when someone turns from wrong (pick up one of the beans). ere is more joy in heaven because of one person who is sorry for the mistakes he or she has done, than over ninety-nine people who are sure they haven t done anything wrong. (Remove the beans. Place nine coins in front of you, hiding the tenth nearby.) Person 2 I bought five pairs of oxen. I ll have to go try them. Sorry, I won t be able to come. Stranger 1 Stranger 2 Stranger 3 Or, think about a woman who has ten precious coins (place a finger on each coin as you count them, but stop and look worried when you only reach nine). If she loses one of them, she will light her lamp and sweep the whole house (sweep your hand over the floor or table searching for the coin). She will search carefully in every corner until she finds the coin (hold up the lost coin). en she will call to her friends and neighbors, Celebrate with me, for I have found the coin that I lost. is is the way God s angels celebrate when someone turns from doing wrong to following God s ways (turn the lost coin over as you place it back down with the other coins). 92 / Additional resources
