BIBLE STUDY Jesus knew it was time for Him to die. He sat down with His disciples for the Passover meal and did something very unusual. Jesus washed His disciples feet. This humble act was usually reserved for a servant. The footwashing symbolized a spiritual cleansing. The disciples were already positionally clean before God (See John 13:10.) but even redeemed people still sin and need daily cleansing. (See 1 John 1:9.) In this, Jesus also set forth an example of love and humility for His disciples to mirror in their own actions toward one another. (John 13:15) As they ate the Passover meal, Jesus broke bread and gave it to His disciples. He shared the cup with them too, explaining that the bread and cup represented His body and blood. Jesus established a new covenant. In the Old Testament, God made a covenant or promise with His people. He gave them commandments to follow so they could live in right relationship with Him. But God s people broke the covenant. They didn t obey God, and they didn t love Him. By dying on the cross, Jesus brought forgiveness and made the way for people to know and love God again. Jesus and the disciples ate the first Lord s Supper at Passover, a time when God s people remembered how God had rescued His people from the Egyptians passing over the houses marked with the blood of a lamb. Jesus instituted a new memorial, to Himself the Lamb of God whose blood would bring salvation to the world. Believers take the Lord s Supper to remember what Jesus did for us in His death and resurrection. We remember God s faithfulness to rescue His people, and we look forward to the day He will return. Few of the preschoolers you teach will be ready to take the Lord s Supper at church. Gently explain that the Lord s Supper, like baptism, is an ordinance of the church and is a celebration for those who have repented of their sin and trusted in Jesus for salvation. SUGGESTED THEME DECORATING IDEAS: Place a few props in the large group area that would be used if a family were preparing to move, such as cardboard boxes, tape rolls, bubble wrap, and packing paper. Simulate packing up the room. Stack empty cardboard boxes at the front of the room. Position a dolly or hand truck to one side. Stack rolls of tape, packing paper, and other moving supplies on a table. Each session, pack away more things in the room. Consider projecting the theme background slide. 1 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Leader enters with a towel over his or her shoulder.] Leader Whew! I am so tired! I have spent all weekend loading boxes into the moving truck. I ve carried boxes of books, plates, glasses, and other heavy things. Boy, are my feet sore! I know I m supposed to be sharing the Bible story today, but my feet are aching so badly that I have got to give them a good soak in this warm water. Excuse me. [Sit next to the basin and eases your feet into it, sighing in relaxation.] That s better! The warm water is helping release all the tension in my feet. Just one more minute and done. Now I just need to dry them off! [Struggle to dry your feet.] The only problem is my back is sore too. I don t think I can reach my feet. I need a volunteer to come dry my feet off! Who will help me? [Choose a volunteer.] Oh, thank you for volunteering! You are a true servant. Just dry them off quickly, thank you. Can we give our volunteer servant a hand? You know, the way our friend just served me reminds me of Jesus serving His friends shortly before His death. WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES) Say The Bible is a true book. The Bible tells us everything we need to know about God and His Son, Jesus. Today s Bible story is in two of the Gospels: Matthew and John. The Gospels tell about Jesus life on earth. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling tips. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. OPTIONAL BIBLE STORY SCRIPT The Last Supper John 13:1-15; Matthew 26:26-30 Jesus friends went into the city to get the Passover meal ready. Then they sat at the table with Jesus. Jesus knew it was almost time to go back to His Father in heaven. Jesus got up from the table. He poured water into a bowl and started washing His friends feet. What was Jesus doing? Only servants washed people s feet. Jesus was a King! Peter wanted Jesus to stop. You will never wash my feet! he said. Jesus answered, If I don t wash you, you do not belong to Me. 2 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Don t just wash my feet then, Peter said. Wash my hands and head too! But Jesus said Peter didn t need a whole bath. Peter was already clean in his heart because he believed in Jesus and God had forgiven his sins. Jesus washed all of His friends feet and then He sat back down at the table. Do you know why I washed your feet? He asked. Jesus taught His friends something important. I am your Teacher and Lord, He said. I want you to follow My example. Wash one another s feet. Serve one another. Jesus ate the Passover meal with His friends. While they ate, Jesus took the bread. He blessed and broke it and gave it to the other men. Take this and eat it; this is like My body, He said. Then Jesus took a cup and thanked God. He gave it to His friends and said, Take a drink; this is like My blood. After the meal, Jesus and His friends sang songs and went to a mountain outside of the city. Timeline Poster Main Point Slide Christ Connection: Jesus loved and helped His friends and taught them to love and help each other. Jesus loved and helped us by doing for us what we could never do. Jesus is our King who died on the cross to rescue us from our sin.ame to earth to die on the cross to take away people s sin so they could be friends with God. TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE) Big Picture question slides Say Jesus is the King, but He washed His friends dirty feet. Then Jesus ate a special meal with His friends. Jesus used the food they ate to tell them that His body would be hurt and He would bleed so that He could save them from their sin. Have the kids answer with either a thumbs up or thumbs down for each question. Point to the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions: 1. What did Jesus wash for his friends? Their hands (thumbs up) or their feet (thumbs down)? 2. Why did Jesus wash his friends feet? Was it so that they would learn to love and help each other? (up) or because their feet were so stinky? (down) 3. What meal did Jesus and His friends eat together? (Passover) 4. Did Jesus love his friends? Yes! (up) or no (down)? BIG PICTURE QUESTION (1 MINUTE) Say Now, instead of the Passover meal, people who trust in Jesus eat the Lord s Supper. Why do believers share the Lord s Supper? Believers share the Lord s Supper to remember Jesus Jesus did for us what we could never do when He died on the cross to rescue us from sin. Key passage Key Passage song The Spirirt of the Lord song KEY PASSAGE (5 MINUTES) Open your Bible to Luke 4:18. Read the key passage aloud several times. Sing together the key passage song, The Spirit of the Lord. Say Our key passage tells us that God s Spirit was on Jesus. Jesus came to earth to love and help people. God sent Jesus to earth to be our King who died on the cross to rescue us from our sin. PRAYER (2 MINUTES) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUP 3 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Welcome children and set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity Page pencils or markers ACTIVITY PAGE (10 MINUTES) Lead children to draw a line connecting matching feet. Say We wear shoes to keep our feet safe and clean. In Bible times, people mostly wore sandals. Listen to our Bible story to hear something very unusual that Jesus did to His friends feet. 10 minutes after the start of service Break into groups of 10 or less children for Small groups balls, 1 per group ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) Play a pass over game Form lines of five to seven children. Give the last child in line a ball. Direct her to pass the ball over the head of the child in front of her into his uplifted hands. Then that child will pass the ball over the head of the child in front of him into her hands and so forth. When the first child in line gets the ball, she should move to the back of the line and pass the ball over the head of the child who started the game. Play until each child has a turn at the back of the line. Say In today s Bible story, Jesus and His friends celebrated Passover. Passover has nothing to do with a ball though. God s people celebrated Passover to remember how God rescued His people from being slaves in Egypt. Now followers of Jesus celebrate the Lord s Supper instead. Why do believers share the Lord s Supper? Believers share the Lord s Supper to remember Jesus SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. As preschoolers eat, remind them that Jesus ate a special meal with His friends called Passover to remember how God rescued His people from Egypt. Now believers share the Lord s Supper to remember how Jesus rescued us from sin. Why do believers share the Lord s Supper? Believers share the Lord s Supper to remember Jesus Jesus died on the cross and came back to life to save people from sin. 4 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page. crayons Journal Page JOURNAL PAGE AND PRAYER Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a picture of a way they can serve someone else. Remind preschoolers that Jesus loved and helped His friends and taught them to love and help each other. Pray for the children. Say God, thank You that Jesus loved and helped us by doing for us what we could never do dying on the cross to rescue us from our sin. Help us to love and serve others like Jesus loved and served us. Amen. While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God. GOD IS KING. Ask: Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world? Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge. WE SINNED. Ask: Have you ever done something wrong? Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad. GOD SENT JESUS. Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin. JESUS LOVES. Ask: Do you like presents? Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us. Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus. THE GOSPEL: GOD S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.
