Nelson Announcements Lighting of the First Advent Candle Candle Lighting Song: He Came Down ELW #253 All: He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; Hallelujah forevermore. (sing twice) L: Come, Lord Jesus, keep us awake for the day you return. Fill us with your love, so that we can be agents of your mercy and justice. Come, Lord Jesus, come. All: He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; He came down that we may have love; Hallelujah forevermore. (sing once) *Brief Order for Confession and Forgiveness P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for prayer and reflection. Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: Our Lord Jesus came down that we might have love His deep love for all humanity and for all creation. Because of that love, He has forgiven us all of our sins and is eager to fill us with light and truth. As you await His coming again, hear the good news. Your sins are forgiven in the mane of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. *Gathering Hymn: *Greeting Awake! Awake, and Greet the New Morn ELW #242 P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. -1- -2-

*Kyrie *Hymn of Praise -3- -4-

Prayer of the Day: Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection awaken us to the threatening dangers of our sins, and keep us blameless until the coming of your new day, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Children s Message Reading: Isaiah 64:1 9 1 O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence 2 as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. 5 You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed. 6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7 There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8 Yet, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O LORD, and do not remember iniquity forever. Now consider, we are all your people. *Gospel Acclamation *Gospel: Mark 13:24 37 P: The Holy Gospel according to Mark the 13 th chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. [Jesus said:] 24 In those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. 28 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 32 But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon: Pastor Clay Schmit Hymn of the Day: Joy to the World ELW #267-5- -6-

*The Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is our duty and our joy...we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus *The Prayers of the Church A:...We await your coming, O God. C: Wait for the Lord, whose day is near. Wait for the Lord, be strong, take heart. (sung response, ELW #262) P:...Jesus Christ, our Lord. *Sharing of the Peace P: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. Offering Offering Anthem: (8:15) An Advent Invitation D. Nolan (10:45) Come, O Lord arr. W. Wold *Words of Institution Offertory Prayer P: Let us pray. Holy God, gracious and merciful, you bring forth food from the earth and nourish your whole creation. Turn our hearts toward those who hunger in any way, that all may know your care; and prepare us now to feast on the bread of life, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. -7- -8-

*Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is i n heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Communion The table of Christ is open to all who believe. You are welcome to come to this meal. We believe that the risen Christ meets us here in person to offer us forgiveness and strength to live our lives of faith. Gluten free bread and grape juice are available; please just ask the servers. Please take a moment to fill our communication card found in the bulletin and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. Thank you. K E Y INSPIRING WORSHIP ALL WEEK The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way a voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight the paths for him. Mark 1:1 3 TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH 1410 Rogers St Stevens Point, Wisconsin The Reverend Dr. Clay Schmit Ministers: Every Baptized Member R E A D I N G S Preparing for Sunday, December 10 Day 1 Isaiah 40:1 11 Day 2 Psalm 85:1 2, 8 13 Day 3 2 Peter 3:8 15a Day 4 Mark 1:1 8 Day 5 Proverbs 25:25 Day 6 Isaiah 61:1 * Sunday readings in bold A P P L Y P R A Y E R S There s more than enough bad news in the world to go around lately, isn t there? It s nice when something positive manages to break its way through the darkness. In that respect, our Gospel reading this week from Mark, more than delivers. In John the Baptist, it begins! We hear of the promise of the One who will come to change what we know of as good news forever. That news is not only intended to be told by a prophet (wearing camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey), but by you and by me, not only during Advent, but each day as we repent and await the coming Messiah. Consider this week how your life too might tell of this promise to a world that waits, wonders, prays, and hungers to hear some good news? Promised God, we give thanks for your presence in our lives and the gift of your Son, Jesus. This Advent, grow in our hearts a living faith that tells others each day of your incredible love. Help us to share this good news with a waiting world that needs to hear. Amen. Devotions written by Trinity members.
