Salem Lutheran Church P O B O X 1 2 8 H I T T E R D A L, M N 5 6 5 5 2 2 1 8-962- 3 2 1 3 A U G U S T 2 0 1 8 A Message from Pastor Tom I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you. 2 Timothy 1:5 Dear Friends in Christ, In this verse from Paul s letter to his student Timothy, Paul acknowledges the role of Timothy s grandmother and mother in passing the Christian faith on to their descendants. Some wise old person once said that the Christian faith is caught not taught. I can attest to that truth in my own life where the people who seemed to matter most in my faith formation were the people who showed me by their lives what it means to be a Christian. As you know I recently returned from a trip to Norway. There we visited ancient cathedrals which were first built by Catholics and later converted to Protestant use. We stood in the grand old Nidero Cathedral in Trondheim and received communion just as thousands upon thousands of Christians before us declared their faith in a living Lord. I was reminded of the debt I owe to those faithful servants of God. Without their commitment to Jesus I may never have even heard the Gospel, much less be embraced and redeemed by it. When I came back to Salem Church in Hitterdal and looked out on our congregation, I thought how thankful I am for your faithful witness. God has called each one of us to be a light in the darkness of this world, to be salt in the earth and to bare the truth of God s grace to this generation of believers, that they in turn may pass the torch on to the future generations until our Lord returns in glory. May God bless you and keep you in his grace that your witness to him might ignite the flame of faith in the hearts of your children and grandchildren and that you might experience the joy of sharing that faith with those you love. Peace, Pastor Tom 1
