OUR IMAM S Abid Khan A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Every Masjid holds a special place as a house of Allah (swt) but Cheadle Masjid is different. It is more than a place of worship, it s the beating heart of our community. Each one of us has our own story about how we have come to this Masjid, however, regardless of our starting point, we all come together as a community to worship Allah (swt), learn more about our Deen and reach out to our neighbours through acts of charity and kindness. Yet, our success is also our greatest challenge. The Masjid that welcomes so many is now at full capacity and beyond. We know we need to address this, not only so we can all pray under one roof, but also so we can expand the services we offer, enabling us to welcome, support and guide more people. To do this we need to build a new Masjid. One that will provide for our community today and for future generations. Without our community we falter, with it we thrive. Which is why we are thrilled to share some of our community s stories and reveal our plans to rebuild Cheadle Masjid. Please support us in this noble endeavour. Cheadle Masjid Board of Trustees Abid Khan Director of Education and Deputy Imam Shaykh Abdi Ghaffar Imam Our success is also our greatest challenge. The Masjid that welcomes so many is now at full capacity When I first walked into Cheadle Masjid I was struck by the sense of inclusivity that made both young and old feel welcome. As I increased my knowledge, I was encouraged to deliver talks, khutbahs and courses to share my learning with others. I was further empowered by the Masjid to establish activities and programmes to attract our youth. Inspired by the community s faith in me, my spiritual journey took me on a path to Al-Azhar University in Cairo where I continued my studies. on returning, I accepted the roles of Director of Education and Assistant Imam so I could contribute further to this special community that had given me so much. Through my roles it has become clear we need a new purpose built facility, so my plea to you is to support this development in any way you can. Shaykh Abdi Ghaffar I have been privileged to be the Imam of Cheadle Masjid for the last nine years. This Masjid is close to my heart and I am sure, like me, you love the unity amongst the community. We have a fantastic volunteer team of both brothers and sisters and we see great love and respect between the young and the old. Masha Allah this Masjid is the core of this community and the following pages will highlight the many unique and important activities that we do. We pray that you can all support the Masjid s growth and be part of its exciting future Insha Allah. 4 5

THERE S NO BETTER WAY TO EXPLAIN OUR WORK THAN THROUGH THE VOICES OF OUR COMMUNITY. CHEADLE MASJID My Favourite Masjid I pray at Cheadle Masjid every day, I teach here every week, and the people I love and cherish most in the world are connected in one way or the other to the Masjid. We firmly believe in the prophetic statement that the best of us are those that are most beneficent to mankind. GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS Despite the space limitations, the Masjid provides a first-class service for both Muslims and non-muslims. This Masjid has already left its own mark on this community and in the future it will have a hugely positive impact on the rest of the UK too. Shaykh Abu Eesa Niamatullah Caring for Our Local Community When an opportunity to give back arose, I took it. Serving food at the local Wellspring homeless shelter, talking with the destitute and being a friendly and familiar face means so much to the people there. Our community also shares our wealth by contributing to a winter essentials pack that helps the homeless survive the harshest months. It s a real pleasure to volunteer in this way. Sister Aaliyah Giving the Gift of Knowledge After school, I attend the Madrassa where I have learned about the The Last Day, Allah s (swt) Decree and the Scriptures. I invited all my friends to the Visit My Mosque event and I really enjoyed Cheadle Masjid Has Got Talent. I can t wait for the school holidays to start so I can go to Quran Club! CHEADLE MASJID GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS Connecting Our People Linking With the Local Community I moved to Wilmslow during my career as a professional footballer and shortly after reverted to Islam. A friend took me to Cheadle Masjid where I was excited to find a family-orientated community with a comprehensive programme. In our fast-paced world it s easy to lose track of time and get caught up in life s demands. Going to Cheadle Masjid helps me refocus on the most important things in life. Brother Nathan Ellington Fontaine I was introduced to Cheadle Masjid when we moved from London to Cheadle. As a woman, I was slightly apprehensive about how I would be treated but was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome I received. Since then, Cheadle Masjid has become a second home for me and my family and a place where I feel that I truly belong. Reaching Out to Other Faiths My close and positive relationship with Cheadle Masjid is based on mutual respect and a willingness to learn from and understand one another s traditions and practices. The Masjid s participation in local events has enriched the community of Heald Green. Reverend Charles Nevin United We Stand I ve been involved with Cheadle Masjid for many years as a local councillor and community leader. Your outreach work involving our Interfaith Forum, Community Festival and Stockport s Wellspring project for the homeless does you great credit. Peter Burns FORMER STOCKPORT MAYOR Taking care of our neighbours and community is an obligation on all Muslims. Sister Yasmeen Desnavi This Masjid is very diverse yet united. Just as you see south-east Asians so you see Arabs and Africans. Islam has united them and they have become one unit. Sheikh Abu Bakr al-shatri 10 11
CHEADLE MASJID GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS With over 20 years of service, Cheadle Masjid has become a pillar in the community - help us make it a new beacon Masjid. Engaging Our Youth I organise the monthly Youth Qiyam which brings around 80 youngsters together for study circles, camps, trips and other activities. We aim to build up their interpersonal skills and impart Islamic knowledge and lifestyle advice. By empowering our younger members I am positive that we will ensure the continuity and progression required to sustain our future. Brother Abid Anwar 12 Supporting Physical Health and Wellbeing We run a range of sporting activities and we seek to introduce new pursuits to appeal to more people. Sport brings our brothers and sisters closer to the Masjid and teaches young people the fundamentals of sportsmanship, teamwork and humility and promotes fair play and wellbeing. Brother Humayoun Choudry 13
EMULATING THE PROPHETIC MASJID Over 1400 years ago, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) established a new home for believers in the city of Medina. At its heart he built a Masjid to provide a focal point for the Muslim community where they could gather to worship Allah (swt) and organise. This tradition continues today with communities establishing safe places to congregate, pray, seek support and learn. At Cheadle Masjid we place an emphasis on the Masjid being an all-encompassing community centre, providing a place for prayer, education and a centre for the community to come together. Our activities are increasing and we need your continued support to enable us to grow. In Houses (Masjids), which Allah (swt) has ordered to be raised, in them His Name is Glorified in the mornings and the evenings AL QUR AN 24:36 14 15
BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY THE CHALLENGES By the Grace of Allah (swt), our activities continue to increase. However, this places a strain on our existing infrastructure which cannot accommodate everyone and everything we do. Some of the key areas this impacts: capacity for our supplementary school services space limitations at key times for both women and men THE FUTURE A number of options have been explored but the path forward is clear. We must build a new Masjid. We have been blessed to be able to deliver so many services to our community from our existing site, but with a new purpose built Masjid we will be able to do so much more. Our vision for the new Masjid is to: our ability to develop stronger links with the wider community through a multi-functional space lack of important community facilities such as ghusl facilities for the deceased a) b) c) build a multipurpose centre for all provide an inspiration for our future generations promote greater community cohesion Whoever builds a house (Masjid) for Allah, whether it be small or large, Allah builds for him a house in Paradise. [TIRMIDHI] d) e) create a modern centre for families and social activities provide better facilities for ladies and our youth This new venue will mean we can hold more events, run additional projects and give even more of our congregation the opportunity to volunteer and carry out good works. By enabling our youth to learn more about their faith, we will be building the foundations for a stronger future by inspiring the next generation to become the teachers of tomorrow. 16 17
