The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Grant us, Lord, the spirit to think and do what is right that we, who cannot do anything that is good without You, may by Your help be enabled to live according to Your will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Rite 1, p. 41 OPENING PRAYER P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. HYMN #333:1-3 CHRIST, THE LIFE OF ALL THE LIVING THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us a true knowledge of You, and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON (LORD, HAVE MERCY) 3

THE ABSOLUTION P: Lift up your hearts unto God! Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us, and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Amen. 4

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO (GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST) P: Glory be to God in the highest. 5

THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. THE LESSON JEREMIAH 23:1-6 1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! declares the LORD. 2 Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the shepherds who shepherd my people. You have scattered my flock. 6

You have driven them away. You have not taken care of them, but I will certainly take care of you, because of the evil things you have done, declares the LORD. 3 I will gather what is left of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their pastures. They will be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them. They will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing, declares the LORD. 5 Listen, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, who will reign wisely as king and establish justice and righteousness on earth. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will dwell securely. This is his name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. THE EPISTLE EPHESIANS 2:13-22 13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace. He made the two groups one by destroying the wall of hostility that divided them 15 when he abolished the law of commandments and regulations in his flesh. He did this to create in himself one new person out of the two, in this way making peace. 16 And he did this to reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by putting the hostility to death on it. 17 He also came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19 So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God s household. 20 You have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the Cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. 7

THE HOLY GOSPEL MARK 6:30-34 P: The Holy Gospel for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 6 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the 30 th verse. 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while. For there were so many people coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat. 32 They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33 But many people saw them leave and knew where they were going. They ran there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34 When Jesus stepped out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. His heart went out to them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He began to teach them many things. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary 8

and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. HYMN #283 GLORY BE TO JESUS THE SERMON EPHESIANS 2:13-22 UNITED IN CHRIST THROUGH HIS BLOOD THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 9

THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (Malachi 3:10) PLEASE FILL OUT THE FRIENDSHIP REGISTER. THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Peace Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members of the ELS and WELS partake of the Sacrament today. Visitors, please speak to the Pastor about receiving the Sacrament in the future. THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts unto the Lord. 10

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, but chiefly are we bound to praise You for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for He is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us and has taken away the sins of the world. By His death He has destroyed death, and by His rising to life again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: THE SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY) 11

THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. 12

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. THE AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) 13

THE DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMNS #239 I LAY MY SINS ON JESUS #432 JESUS THY BLOOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS HYMN OF THANKSGIVING #327 O LORD, WE PRAISE THEE THE COLLECT OF THANKSGIVING P: Let us give thanks and pray: We thank You, Lord God Almighty, that You have refreshed us with these Your salutary gifts; and we beseech You of Your mercy, to strengthen us through the same in faith toward You, and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. 14

THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. THE CLOSING HYMN #593 ON MY HEART IMPRINT THINE IMAGE THE CLOSING PRAYER P: O Lord, we render unto You our heartfelt thanks that You have taught us what You would have us believe and do. Help us, O God, by Your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to keep Your Word in pure hearts, that we thereby may be strengthened in faith, perfected in holiness, and comforted in life and death. Amen. Thank you to those who served in our service today: Communion Assistants: Jason DeWitt, Greg Miller; Organist: Nikki Basel; The ushers. To God be the Glory! Peace Devotions Giving Opportunity Our pastors and a small group of members from our congregation started an ambitious project last October to produced daily devotional videos as a resource to our members and to reach many beyond our church walls with the Gospel of Christ. This undertaking has not been cheap or easy, yet it has proven to be both popular and beneficial with the average video being viewed well over 1,000 times. When we started, we received special funding from the synod to get this project off of the ground. However, our main funding has been used up and we are in need of your support for this ministry to continue. A generous donor has recently pledged to match up to $5,000 in gifts given to support this worthy cause. We need your help. If you d like to donate please include a special offering in the plate with Peace Devotions in the memo line. Cash donations can also be received through the church office. We ask that God continue to bless this special ministry. 16
