TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So, it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and wine that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. John 6:53 QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22 nd MASSES AT 6:45 AM AND 8:30 AM The Queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. Psalm 45:10 On this Feast, we celebrate Mary our Blessed Mother as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. This is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but please try to attend one of our morning masses at 6:45 AM or 8:30 AM to honor our Blessed Mother on this special day. Pope Francis said recently, Let us address Mary in the words of the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen), a prayer both ancient and new, so that she may never tire of turning her merciful eyes towards us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of mercy, her Son Jesus. Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above, O Maria! Hail, Mother of mercy and of love, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina! TODAY S READINGS First Reading Wisdom has built her house; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table (Proverbs 9:1-6). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Be filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:15-20). Gospel I am the living bread that came down from heaven (John 6:51-58). CATHARINE S PARISH 150 TH ANNIVERSARY Celebrating St. Catharine s 150 Years of Service to God s People There is so much to be grateful for in this, our 150 th Anniversary, and we hope you will share in the joy and beauty of our wonderful parish. OUR LADY OF KNOCK IRELAND, 1879 FEAST DAY AUGUST 21 On the evening of August 21, 1879, in the pouring rain, 15 men, women and children, mainly from the village of Knock in County Mayo, and ranging in age from 5-74 years old, claimed to see a holy apparition on the south gable of the local parish church. In the center appeared a beautiful woman, clothed in white garments, wearing a large brilliant crown. Her hands rested as if in prayer. This woman was understood by all who saw her to be the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Queen of the Angels. St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist were beside her, and an altar with a lamb and a cross on it were just behind her. Above the altar were several angels. The symbolism of the lamb, the cross, and the altar has been seen as pointing to the sacrificial death of Christ and the Mass, and yet these were behind Mary in the apparition at Knock, suggesting that the focus was on her and her role as mediator. In the pouring rain, the witnesses stayed and prayed the Rosary. The apparition lasted for two hours. The apparition took place at a troubled time for Ireland. Land reform efforts had provoked heated controversy and even violence, while scattered famines recalled the fearful times of Ireland s Great Hunger. It was into this environment that the Lord again sent His Mother to visit with His oppressed children. There were no words spoken during the apparition, almost as if it meant, the Irish people have suffered, and we are going to be out here in the rain with you for a while. No movement, no sound, just an unhurried apparition before a small group or normal, everyday people, in the middle of nowhere. Ten days after the apparition, the first cure occurred. A young girl, born deaf, was given the gift of hearing. By the end of 1880, some 300 cures, apparently miraculous, had been recorded in the diary of the Parish Priest. In the Fall of 1880, a statue of Our Lady of Knock was erected where she had been seen during the vision. Knock has become one of the major Catholic pilgrimage sites, alongside Lourdes and Fatima, and more than one and a half million pilgrims visit there every year. The Church officially investigated the apparition of Knock in 1879, and again in 1936. It was found that the witnesses were believable and that there was nothing contrary to the faith. Four recent Popes have honored Knock. Pope John Paul II made a personal pilgrimage to the Shrine on September 30, 1979. He addressed the sick and the nursing staff, celebrated Mass, established the Shrine Church as a Basilica, presented a candle and the Golden Rose to the Shrine, and finally, knelt in prayer at the apparition wall. Central to the beauty of this story, there s hope for all of us ordinary people. OUR LADY OF KNOCK Written by Dana (Rosemary Scallon) There were people of all ages gathered round the gable wall poor and humble men and women, little children that you called. We are gathered here before you, and our hearts are just the same filled with joy at such a vision, as we praise your name. Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland, all my cares and troubles cease as we kneel with love before you, Lady of Knock, my Queen of Peace. Though your message was unspoken, still the truth in silence lies as we gaze upon your vision, and the truth I try to find. Here I stand with John the Teacher, and with Joseph at your side and I see the Lamb of God, on the Altar glorified. Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland, all my cares and troubles cease as we kneel with love before you, Lady of Knock, my Queen of Peace. And the Lamb will conquer and the woman clothed in the sun will shine Her light on everyone. And the Lamb will conquer and the woman clothed in the sun, will shine Her light on everyone. Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland, all my cares and troubles cease as we kneel with love before you, Lady of Knock, my Queen of Peace. Lady of Knock, my Queen of Peace.
