COLOSSIANS 3:17 Mass of Thanksgiving 9:00 AM St. Margaret of Antioch Church 115 W. CENTRAL AVENUE PEARL RIVER, NY 10965 2018 Bon Venture Services, LLC

Page 2 Nov. 18, 2018 From the Desk of Father Raaser Now we approach the center and high point of the entire Mass, the Canon or Eucharistic Prayer. This prayer is one long thanksgiving to God. The climax of this prayer, are the words of Christ in the Consecration. The entire prayer ends with the Great Doxology and the Great Amen. During the Mass when the priest calls us to prayer, he simply says, Let us pray. However, the priest calls us to a special attention during this prayer. He enters into a formal dialogue with us. We are called not just to pray, but also to Lift up your hearts Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. And every preface begins the same way: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give You thanks In this solemn beginning of the Eucharistic prayer the whole assembly, priest and people praise God; we should pay special attention at this part of the Mass, nothing should distract us, never leave or allow the children to leave the Mass at this time. After the preface, we sing together the Holy, Holy, Holy Lord. The text is inspired by the vision of Isaiah the Prophet; it came to the Mass by the 5th Century. The angels sing constantly this hymn before God in Heaven. It is at this moment, we the earthly Church join with the choirs of the Angels and praise God together. We on earth take part in the Heavenly Liturgy at this moment. For over 1500 years, there was one Eucharistic prayer, the Roman Canon. With Vatican II, there are now 10 different Eucharistic prayers. The most noble and oldest is the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). It is a magnificent prayer, beautiful prose in accord with ancient rules of speech-making. It begins asking God to accept these gifts, these offerings, these unblemished sacrifices. Then we pray for the living, there is silence where we can add our personal names. We then remember the apostles, all 12 are named and then there is a list of another 12 men. Who are they? Linus: The second pope; Cletus: the third pope; Clement: the fourth pope; Sixtus: The first pope with this name; Cornelius: A martyr-pope (died 253) always coupled with Cyprian: Bishop of Carthage and martyr (died 258), the first saint who is not an Apostle or Pope. Lawrence: deacon, after Saints Peter and Paul, the patron saint of early Rome. Chrysogonus: a layman and a catechist, a very early Church martyr. John and Paul: brothers and military officers of the Roman Empire. They were martyred, along with Cosmas and Damian: doctors, another pair of brothers and martyrs. Again we ask God to accept our offerings and save us from final damnation. Now we enter into the core of the Mass; the Institution narrative. We begin by asking God to send His Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine so they can become for us the Sacred Body and Blood of His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Next Week, we will look at the Consecration, the core of the Mass. THANKSGIVING This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. It is the closest we ever get every year in praying together as a nation. All the churches in a community come together in prayer within ecumenical services. Tomorrow night at 7:30 PM at the Temple Beth Am Pearl River will gather together for our Ecumenical Service. You are invited to attend. As Roman Catholics and Americans, as we celebrate Thanksgiving each year we hope and pray that America will always retain the original gratefulness to God displayed by the Pilgrims and many other founding fathers. I invite you and your family to come to the Parish Mass of Thanksgiving on Thursday morning at 9:00AM. I invite you to bring with you something from your table to be blessed, and then return to your family celebration. I also encourage all our families, to say grace before every meal, if you don t already. Bless us O Lord and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Presentation of Mary November 21st Heavenly Father, the Blessed Virgin Mary was dedicated to You by her parents when she was three. In the temple, she joined the girls who spent their days praying, reading Scripture, and serving the temple priests. Her holiness was very evident, and the high priest thought that You probably had great plans for her. I ask Mary to pray for the plans You have for my life. Where I have strayed onto a road of my own choosing, give me her hand to guide me back to where You want me. Where I need to wait for a new plan to begin, give me the grace remain patient and say, "Your will be done." Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for me. Amen Prayer of Thanksgiving "O Heavenly Father: We thank Thee for food and remember the hungry. We thank Thee for health and remember the sick. We thank Thee for friends and remember the friendless. We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved. May these remembrances stir us to service. That Thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen."
