News from the United Methodist Women Are you coming? Hope you can come to the Ice Cream Social at Ed, Sharon and Scott Starling s 5008 Shreve Rd. Wooster, Ohio. Bring a dessert or snack to go along with the ice cream. There will be fun for the whole family! Don t forget the date and time Sunday, July 22 @ 4:00pm. The vegetable soup will be cooking in the church kitchen on Saturday, September 22 at 8:00 am for the Shut-ins. This is the most important mission work the UMW has in the year. A crafty evening will be on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00pm when the UMW will get together to create three different crafts. One of the crafter will be making holiday cards, led by Joann Watson. Come and take home your creations and enjoy an evening of fellowship. The rest of the year is rounded out by the Fall Harvest Dinner on Sunday, November 4 following the Church service. Of course the last event of the year for the UMW is the cookie walk, luncheon, and bake sale on December 1 at 9:00 am. Were you at the All Daughter Tea? Wasn t it just elegant when you walked into the fellowship hall? Everything was so feminine in pink and white with tea cups and saucers in the center of the tables with real flowers tucked in. Everyone had lots of laughs when we were playing the games. Also it was fun to see what everyone tied on as their apron of the afternoon. Then there was the delicious food served on real glass dessert dishes. And what food there was! There were little tea sandwiches to little cream puffs and goodies in between! Do you have your favor, which was a bottle of soap with the cute apron tied on, sitting on your kitchen counter like I do? It fitted in with the apron theme perfectly. So many people need to be thanked for making it just a perfect afternoon. Two of the people to thank are Bev McGinty and Diane Fischnich for their clever ideas and hard work. Also to everyone else who helped in any way. Have you ever watched the show The Dirtiest Jobs? The lead star of the program Mike Rowe has started a new program called Returning the Favor. In the series he travels the country in search of remarkable people making a difference in their communities. In one of his first programs he was struck by a statement by Angelina Jolie who had just divorced Brad Pitt saying, It never even crossed my mind that my son would need a father. Mike wondered how many other Americans might share her view and asked, Can you imagine anyone saying such a thing just 20 years ago? That brought about finding a person named Carlos who experienced bullying for this episode of his show. Mike stated, It occurred to me halfway through filming that bullying like so many other social ills in today s headlines-isn t really a problem at all: it s a symptom. Carlos then presented facts on fatherless homes: 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes five times the average. Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

90 percent of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes-32 times the average. 85 percent of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes-20 times the average 80 percent of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes-14 times the average 71 percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes- nine times the average. 43 percent of U.S. children live without their father. Then Carlos had three questions: Is it really so surprising to learn that a majority of bullies also come from fatherless homes? As do a majority of school shooters? As do a majority of older male shooters? Carlos stated that this thing we like to call an epidemic of bullying is really an epidemic of fatherlessness. Carlos concluded by saying that the root cause has nothing to do with video games, or guns, or social media, or rock and roll, or sugary drinks, or any of the other boogymen currently in fashion, but instead has everything to do with parents who have changed. It s the parents who have put their own happiness above the best interests of their kids, he said. It s the parents who actually believe the village will raise their kids when the village is profoundly incapable of doing anything of the sort. These are some harsh and scary words. We live in a small village where these numbers can t seem real and don t concern us but maybe they do. People have to wake up and discover what needs to be done to change and make the world better for our children. You may say this isn t an appropriate article for a church newsletter but I think it is because that is where the change will start by following the word of Jesus Christ. We need to grow in our outreach to others and if we know of fatherless children try mentoring to them. These statistics show how important fathers are in a family. This coming Father s Day thank your father for everything he does for you and your family. Jim Streb shared in Bible Sturdy a saying I think really fits this situation in how we should be to others. Never practice what you preach. If you re going to practice it, why preach it? Think about these words written by Lincoln Steffens. God Bless everyone, Beth Johnson UMW Newsletter Contributor Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 KJV) Issue 6 Page 7
