Faith Is Alive Volume 1, Issue 5 (OCT-DEC) JAN 2008 GoodNews First Baptist Body I N S I D E T H I S ISSUE 1 Pastors Thoughts/ GoodNews 3 Calendar Pastors Desk Dr Clarence E Williams As We Approach the Dawning of a New Day, God had found favor in First Baptist Church. The Purpose that God has in store for us is awesome as we hold fast to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I thank God for the vision of Kingdom Building for I know he will bless us in the Soul Saving of many lives. Paul states, I can do all things through Christ which strenghteneth me. Let us work while it s day for when night cometh no man can work. Editors Thoughts Terrence L Hearn Sr Faith Is Alive Ministries In trying to produce this newsletter it has been a trying time. With so many things happening at FBC we sometime forget about our sick and elderly. Let's make 4 Youth Ministry/ Youth Highlight 5 Trustee/ Hospitality Minutes continued on page 2 This is General Information about Our Church body. Rev. Brandon did a Revival at New Hope Baptist Church in McGayhesville, VA on October 1 st. He had support from the church body during that revival. A picture was given by Harold and Jeanette Brown on October 7 th during morning service about our trip to Beauty Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC in September. Placement of a new Trash receptacle began on Sept. 9 th. The men of the church gave monies to pay for the concrete pad to be built for the new receptacle behind the church during morning service on Sept. 14 th. When our men stand together things can begin to happen in our church body. The church's 136 th Anniversary was recognized on Oct. 21 st. Also on that day 5 souls were baptized in the Holy Spirit by water. Our 4 Deaconess' were Consecrated. "Let us work while it's day" On Oct. 28 th we were once again blessed by DURAG Ministries (Minister Chris Johnson) on Student Appreciation Sunday. Brother Troy Burnett (DURAG) was Master of Ceremonies. Sister Melanie Bullock did an arousing poem. Our own Soul Sistahs dance team performed for us. The contemporary Gospel Singers of JMU and Tru Worship also perform and sung praises for us that day. continued on page 3 Newsletter 1

continued from page 1 an effort to check on our elderly in the coming year. Things have started to slow down with the end of the year coming but we are still doing God's work at First Baptist Church. Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid of standing still. Deacons Corner Deacon Anthony Bailey Our Deacons have been steadily keeping the spiritual upkeep of the body in front of them. They have been visiting the sick and elderly. The Deacons had a coat drive until Christmas. Thanks for the coats donated for this drive. Deaconess Bench Deaconess Doris Washington Our new Deaconess in training are no more. They were consecrated October 21 st and assumed their positions on 1 st Sunday of November. First Lady Thoughts Rev. Linda V. Williams I will let her talk about the programs being started here at First Baptist through the VISTA program. We would like to take a Community Needs Assessment. Please help by participating. There will be a Questionnaire passed out in the near future. If you have a blessing or a talent you would like to share, please contact the First Lady here at the church @ (540) 434-3969 or by cell phone (804) 366-3206. May God richly bless you. The 1 st Lady had an idea for a Harvest scene to be placed in front of the church during the week of Oct 7 th. After going to several places in town the scene was put together by Mike Williams, Terrence Hearn Sr & Jr. on the 9 th. One of the biggest surprises 1 st Lady had in the year was the presentation of Robes for her and Pastor on Oct 14 th during the morning services. Pastor dedicated the robes that Sunday. The Robes were done by Majestic Robes of Fredericksburg, VA. The 1 st Lady had a preaching engagement in Winchester on Oct. 20 th. 1 st Lady planned a Thanksgiving Drive with the church and Simms Center from Oct. 21 st thru Nov. 21 st. this drive was done in conjunction with Boys & Girls Club, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Gamma Rho and JMU Athletic Department. Over 100 Blessing Boxes were given out in the local community on Nov. 20 th and Nov. 21 st. Many people helped in delivering the Boxes. Deacon Rogers was able to get a number of turkeys form the Salvation Army for delivery. There were some Blessing Boxes delivered during the Christmas season. Also, let s remember the local needy around the Holiday s and try to give a helping hand when possible. Choir Loft Sis Luvenda Sanchez Our Men in the choir decide to start a singing group within the choir. They named themselves FBC Voices of Praise. The men's Group First Debut on Oct 14 th. Pastor Williams introduced the men after hearing them the day before practicing. The Choir has started having Bible Study Sections as a part of practice. The choir discussed having a name change. The men let the choir be known as FBC Voices of Praise. The new name for the men s group is A Taste of Spirit. The choir is trying to split up Sunday for the different groups to sing. The voices of Praise will sing on 1 st and 2 nd Sunday. The youth will stay on 3 rd Sunday and A Taste of Spirit will sing on 4 th Sundays. A Taste of Spirit sung on the 4th Sunday in November and had a high time during the morning service. Taste of Spirit members are Pastor, Trent Farris, Mike Williams, John Butler, William Parker, Marcus Hearn & Terrence Hearn Sr. Sis. Beverly Harrell had been sick and the choir sent her a love token. Please pray for all choir members as it is a hard job staying focus in help leading the worship services in praise. Trustee Minute Sis Elaine Blakey The Satin Glass Windows are an added beautification to our church. The trustees headed the fund raiser and did an outstanding job of getting people involve purchasing windows. As you see around the church the windows have dedications to many people present and past of First Baptist Church History. Just look at some of the names that are in the windows and remember our present and past. There was a dedication during a morning service after the windows were installed and a formal Dedication service was held on Oct. 14 th with the Dr. John Sloop of1 st Presbyterian (Harrisonburg, VA) as guest Speaker. continued on page 5 Newsletter 2
