God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing, or idea compares to God. ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES God reveals Himself to us through the Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable, and authoritative. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. ABOUT SALVATION That s why Jesus God s Son came and lived on this earth, died, and rose again. God offers His free gift of salvation to all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Savior the only way to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter into God s family and will live with Him forever in heaven. : PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today s story. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Most kids will not ever feel ready to take on something big or new. Pray for your few to have courage to do big things even when they don t feel ready. Ask God to help the kids feel His presence as they do what they should do. 1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEA WHAT YOU NEED: Offering container, paper, pens Invite kids to put their offerings in the container. Ask kids to create a list of things they would need to do in order to be ready for one of the following activities: o a midnight walk in the woods after a heavy snowfall o playing a song on the piano in front of 100 people o hosting a video game night at their house o baking a cake for a surprise party for your grandmother s 80th birthday When the list is complete, have kids decide which items are most important. Choose an item on the list and ask what they think could happen if they didn t do or have that particular part done. How would it change the experience? What would they do to improvise and make the activity still succeed? 2. EARTH, AIR, WATER, FIRE WHAT YOU NEED: Chairs or other ways to designate places for kids to sit, timer Set up a circle of chairs for all but one person in your group. (If chairs are not available, tape X s on the floor or tape sheets of paper to the floor to designate places for kids to sit.) Begin the game by standing in the middle of the circle. Explain that whoever is in the middle will point to someone in the circle and say either earth, air, or water. Within five seconds, the kid who was pointed at must name something that walks on the EARTH, swims in the WATER, or flies in the AIR. If a kid fails to name something within five seconds, he switches places with the kid in the middle. Answers can t be repeated, and the goal is to stay out of the middle. Additionally, the kid in the middle also has the option of saying, FIRE. That word signals all the kids to rearrange and gives the person in the middle the opportunity to take someone else s spot and put a new person in the center of the circle. Adaptation: If you have multiple groups in the room, play this game with the entire room together. Kids will love the added chaos and challenge of playing with a lot of people! PAGE 5

WHAT YOU SAY: Who knew there are so many flying, creeping, swimming, crawling creatures? If you like weird things that swim, buzz, and crawl, you re going to love today s Bible story. If you don t, you might get a little creeped out. [Transition] Let s go to Large Group and see what God wants to teach us about courage today. Lead your group to the Large Group area. PAGE 6

: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. * 1. FACE PAINTING (application activity / review the Bible story) WHAT YOU NEED: Wet wipes; Bibles; markers OR face paint, brushes, and water Form pairs and then give each pair a Bible, wet wipes, and the markers or face paints (and related supplies). Have kids work with their partner to draw a small image of something from the story on their partner s face or the top of their hand. For example, it could be something that represents one of the plagues, a burning bush, or a specific word such as courage. Tell them to keep the images small. Encourage kids to use their Bibles to review the story and to find face painting ideas. Direct them to Exodus 3, 4 6:12, 7 12:42. WHAT YOU SAY: God had Moses marked out for a very unique job. It s as if God painted on Moses forehead, This is God s guy. At first Moses didn t see things the same way God saw them. He had a lot of concerns and questions. He didn t know how he could possibly do all of the hard things God was asking him to do. Has that ever happened to you? (Let kids share.) [Make It Personal] (Share about a difficult task God is asking you to do or something He asked you to do in the past. In what ways do/did you feel unprepared or nervous about it? How is God helping you to overcome your fear and be courageous enough to obey Him?) We all face scary tasks at times. Maybe not quite as terrifying as a Pharaoh, but frightening for sure. It helps to remember that God never asks us to feel brave and ready to take on our Pharaohs. He only asks us to trust Him and take the next step in that direction. If Moses had waited until he felt brave enough to face Pharaoh, it may have never happened! But he trusted God and took that first step in what turned out to be an amazing story of courage and deliverance. There will be times when we feel more like turning away, closing our eyes, or even running as far away as we can. Those are the very moments when our trust in God can grow the most. It s through our fears and staying strong that we learn courage because God is with us. He s on your side this week. [Bottom Line] You can do what you should even when you don t feel ready. 2. YOU CAN DO IT! (application activity) WHAT YOU NEED: Pennies; 12 for each kid, balloons; 3 for each kid Challenge kids to attempt the following activities: o Stack 12 pennies using only one hand. o Keep three balloons in the air for 60 seconds. PAGE 7

o Bend your middle finger as you place the rest of your hand on a flat surface and then try to raise your ring finger. o Raise only one eyebrow. Ask kids to share ideas of things that would have made these games easier, such as using two hands instead of one to stack the pennies. Adaptation: If space and supplies are an issue, provide one set of supplies for each task. Create stations for each task and let groups rotate through. If you go this route, instruct SGLs to lead this activity first thing after Large Group. Give the room a time limit and when the activity is over, groups can go back to their designated spaces. If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions: What are some new things you ve tried or had to do this past year? How prepared or ready did you feel in facing them? How might you feel differently about it today? When do you feel like you most lack courage? What can you do about it? What would motivate you to actually do those things? There will be times when your faith in God is challenged by something that seems impossible for God to get you through. What can you do now to help you prepare for those times? Can you describe how your life might look in the future if you take steps to prepare ahead of time? How is this different than how your life might look if you don t prepare now? WHAT YOU SAY: There may be times when we are asked to do things that make us uncomfortable or even scared, like some of the tasks in this activity! You may not feel like you have all that you need to do the things you re being asked to do. You can try to prepare for some potentially uncomfortable or crazy situations you ll face in life, but there are other things you can t prepare for no matter what you do. Those are the things that God can use to help you understand what it means to have courage that s built on trust in God. There are a lot of things you can be scared of in this world, but before you break out into a cold sweat and hyperventilate, remember that no matter what, you can always trust God, and [Bottom Line] you can do what you should even when you don t feel ready. 3. IT S ALL IN THE TIMING (memory verse activity) WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, stopwatch or timer Sit in a circle. Review the memory verse (Joshua 1:9b) by looking it up with your group and reading it together. Use the navigation tip from last week, if necessary. Ask kids if there were any times when they faced a new situation or something they weren t prepared for this week and it made them feel nervous or afraid. Did they think of Joshua 1:9? How did God help them to have courage? Help the kids learn the verse by playing the following game: o Explain that, at your signal, someone (anyone) should say the first word of Joshua 1:9b. o Then, in no particular order whatsoever, another kid should say the second word. o Continue through the entire verse by having random kids speak one word at any time. PAGE 8

o Tell them that the goal is to avoid speaking at the same time as someone else. If that happens, the group must begin the verse again. Once they ve played the game successfully a couple times, try a time challenge to see how quickly they can get through the whole verse. WHAT YOU SAY: Today s Bottom Line says, [Bottom Line] You can do what you should even when you don t feel ready. Moses is a great example of that. God assigned him an incredibly scary task: rescue the Israelites from the awful Pharaoh. There was no way Moses could be ready to complete that task except to rely on God. In our game, you may have felt reluctant to speak. What if you botched the game by speaking when someone else did and caused everyone to have to start the verse all over? Can you imagine the terror Moses must have felt as he stood in front of the most powerful man on the planet and basically spoke for God and all of Israel? No wonder he didn t feel prepared or adequate. But what an amazing God we have who uses people like Moses and like all of us to do amazing things for Him! Remember Joshua 1:9b this week when God nudges you to do something you re afraid to do. Make sure it s not something silly or dangerous, like taking a dangerous dare or lighting your hair on fire. That s not courage. That s foolishness and God would never lead you that way. Do the right thing and do it with the courage God gives you. PRAY AND DISMISS WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed The world of a fourth or fifth grader is getting increasingly bigger as they are given more opportunities and responsibilities. The prospects can be both exciting as well as frightening as they think about being prepared for their future. Invite your group to discuss some things for which they will need help from God in ways that are different from when they were younger. How might choices get harder as kids get older? For example: o What could become more challenging in their friendships? o How might their attitudes or relationship with their parents and other family members need their attention? o What about a future job or career path? o How might the use of their money, gifts, and other resources be stretched? Let those who are willing pray aloud for some of the things that were shared, and then you can close with a prayer similar to the following: o Dear heavenly Father, thank You for always being with us, even when we are afraid. Please help us to trust You now and in the future. We need Your help to have courage even when we don t feel ready for the things You want us to do. We know that You have all the events of our lives in Your hands and won t let our faith fail if we continue to follow You. In Jesus name, amen. WHAT YOU SAY: Moses did something incredibly courageous, and it was all because he trusted God. He knew God was more powerful than fear. That gave him the courage he needed to stand up to Pharaoh. [Bottom Line] You can do what you should even PAGE 9

when you don t feel ready. Amazing things can happen in your life, too, when you have the courage to trust God and stand up to your Pharaoh-sized fears. God is with you and promises never to leave your side. Have a courageous week! PAGE 10
