What Comes From Within? A beautiful couple got married a few weeks ago and Fr. Kisaka and I were blessed to officiate the wedding. I asked the couple, When did you both really know you loved one another? The cartoon describes their answer they just knew and it only got stronger from the moment they met. We are asked to not just be hearers of God s word, but doers as well! The discernment is observing and listening to where God is leading us and are we willing to be led? What are the talents we nurture and grow from within and do we accept the perfect gifts God gives us? We are often faced with tough decisions throughout life. What sport do I wish to play or what instrument should I practice? Am I good enough to try out for the school play or chorus? Who should I hang around with? Will this person go to homecoming? What college or career do I wish to pursue and where should I live and how do I know I really love this person? Who will I marry or what do I really want to do with my life? The list goes on and on.. What comes from within to making such decisions is the key to making the right choice. As a parent, I often listen to my 5 kids and try to navigate without taking over the steering wheel! Recently, my daughter wanted to move to Chicago. She came home from college and spent a year working and saving and it was the right decision. Being a former cop, I have to admit I cringed when she told me she was moving to the City, where the homicide rate is extremely high. I have another child trying to pick the right college, and another trying to achieve more playing time on the football team. Just last Sunday another son was asking where he should play football. And with another son, I am trying to keep him out on the football field. Believe me, these are decisions I would take in a heartbeat. My Mom taught me that as her six kids got bigger, some of the problems only got bigger. The real tough decisions in our lives are the ones like, do I continue taking chemotherapy, should I leave my spouse, or how do I talk to my kids about drugs or sex? How can I forgive someone and where has my faith gone? Tough decisions sometimes never have an answer. We continuously draw upon our faith and discernment-making tools to navigate such outcomes, which may sometimes bring us to despair and at other times tranquility and freedom. We are asked by the very nature of our Christian faith to perform acts of mercy, forgive our transgressors, and love our enemies, acts that a majority of society cannot or will not perform. Our faith walk causes us to face and work amidst many unsavory situations. These situations cost us and we need to know how much we are willing to pay. The definitive lines of right and wrong take on an array of colors and we must strive to know what boundaries still exist. Today s gospel asks us to know what is within our hearts so we can allow the goodness from God to come from within. Three vital steps allow us to act upon our beliefs: 1. Knowing what is right 2. Being totally committed to it 3. Actually doing it Being Irish, I wish to close with a story that sums up my reflections about today s readings. A doctor asked his medical students, Why do leaves change colors? The doctor prefaced his question by telling the students their answer must have nothing to do with photosynthesis. The doctor was trying to help his students recognize that the beauty of life lies within. When a leaf is brand new, it is green and looks like the others. It is like when we start our lives and want to fit in and not be hurt if we are different than the others. As life goes on, we are like those leaves that recognize that at some point we must let go of the tree of life. The key is recognizing the beauty God has given us comes from within. Our leaves burst forth with such magnificent colors. Our lives reflect and embrace God s wonderful gifts. Celebrating and embracing the magnificent colored leaves of those around us before letting go of the tree of life is the miracle of life. Knowing God s beauty and asking, What comes from within? ~ Deacon John Fay

The List of Intentions for the Sick of our Parish As Catholics, we pray for the sick of our community whenever we celebrate the Eucharist. This happens in every church, in every country around the world. It is an essential part of our liturgy. The members of our faith community who are sick and in need of our prayers are listed below. Early next month, we will enter these names into our Book of Intentions. This Book is kept in the rear of Church and is brought forth with the gifts at Offertory at all of our weekend Masses, so that the Intentions can be offered up to the Lord in prayer. We ask that if your name or the name of a loved one appears on this list and you would like to remain on the list, please call the parish office to let us know. This will help us keep the list current and accurate, and comply with the privacy needs of our parishioners. Thank you.
