It s time to say, THANK YOU & RE-LENT. As I prepared for surgery recently, I was surprised at the great shift in my feelings from day to day. In gratefulness, I was amazed by everyone at the Parish Office, Missions Office, Parish, School, Consolata, Medical Team, Diocese and many friends by the outpouring of love, prayers, best wishes, tokens of special care, support and friendship. In those difficult hours before, during and after surgery, you were very present, very considerate, very comforting and very loving. God bless you and I thank you very much. In prayer, I experienced the spectrum of emotions from complete trust in God s gentle presence and healing power and our Lady of Consolata s tender motherly intercession, to the apprehension that choosing surgery might not be the right decision. Like each one of you, I believe that God is our light and salvation; that trusting in God s mercy and healing power would carry us through life s difficult and tormented moments. But, sometimes, our natural fears will not go away. So we pray for courage to believe in God s always loving and healing presence and ask for help to give our fears over to God s understanding and infinite compassion. Each time I woke up during those nights, I asked for the strength to believe in God s concern for me and thank Him for all of your beautiful thoughtfulness and gentle prayers. People who underwent a hip replacement kept saying to me that it s a piece of cake (I said to myself it better be a rum cake!). The doctor simply dismissed my hesitation and said, Don t be afraid. A little girl on the Sunday before the surgery after Mass came up to me and asked, Fr. Reno, are you scared about your surgery? I answered her, Just a little afraid. With a beautiful smile she answered, Fr. Reno, don t worry about it. I will pray for the doctor. The operation went well, according to Dr. Paul Burton who did the surgery. But are all my fears now gone? Not yet. We will always have to face our natural fears. But deep down, we truly know that God is our light and our salvation and that God understands our fears and does not love us less because complete trust does not always come easily. This year I truly received a surprised call to start Lent a little earlier. Liturgically, Lent will start on February 22, 2012. I started it on February 1, 2012. For every follower of Christ, Lent is a special time when one who has been wounded seeks healing, one who has stopped the Walk of Faith is invited to start all over again with renewed zeal and enthusiasm and one who has lost something precious is invited to look for it or to replace it with something greater as soon as possible. The Church invites us to reach these goals by becoming more committed and faithful to our prayer life, to be able to forgive and to receive forgiveness and finally to answer openly and generously to the cry of the poor. Just as Jesus' eyes roamed down the hillside of Jerusalem on his journey to Calvary and embraced every person in need of Redemption, we also are cordially invited to allow our eyes to gaze and rest peacefully, mercifully and gracefully on every person on the way and grace him or her with the gift of Light and Salvation. Yours in Christ,

St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Page 6 February 19, 2012 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the canals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of life's abundance before immersing ourselves. Literally "Good-bye to the Flesh," these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring life's wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. Then, as you step forward to receive ashes on your brow, you will have already acquired a yearning for the renewing splash of Easter's waters. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Cathechism Quiz for the Month of February Welcome back to our monthly quiz! If you know the answer to this question (no cheating on the Internet, Facebook or Twitter - you ll have to go to confession during Lent if you do!), the first person to call the parish office with the correct answer on Tuesday, February 21st after 9:00am, will win a $25 gift card to Kohls! Put on your thinking caps - this one s a tough question! Here we go... The Catholic Church Liturgically celebrates Lent starting with what day and ending on what day? The answer will be published in next week s bulletin (along with the source). Have fun searching for this one! TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new! (Isaiah 43:18-19, 21-22, 24b- 25) Psalm -- Lord, heal my soul, for I have sinned against you (Psalm 41). Second Reading -- God has given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment (2 Corinthians 1:18-22).
