LEQ Revision Guide This LEQ Revision Guide is intended to assist you in your effort to revise your Revolutions LEQ. More generally, this LEQ Revision Guide is intended to support you as a writer and help you improve your writing in WHAP.

Overview: The Revolutions LEQ You have received your Revolutions LEQ back. You received an overall LEQ score (out of 6), but you also received a numerical grade (out of 50). This LEQ is going to count for half of a test grade, so the grade that you see out of 50 is what you currently have going toward that test grade. The other half (the other 50 points) will come from the Imperialism DBQ. You have the ability to revise this LEQ and re-submit it. If you earn a higher score, I will enter this score for the LEQ component of your test grade. The deadline to revise your LEQ is Thursday, March 22- you must turn your LEQ into the tray by this date.

Rules for revising your LEQ Your revised LEQ must still be handwritten You cannot copy information from another student s paper or from a source. What you submit must be your own ideas. If this rule is violated, your new revised version will not be considered.

Revolutions LEQ Prompts Here are the LEQ prompts that you had to choose from. You were to choose the one you felt more confident responding to. PROMPT 1: In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. PROMPT 2: During the period 1770-1825, increasing discontent with existing government structures and the spread of Enlightenment ideas propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. Develop an argument that evaluates how one or more revolutions during this time period reflected the rise and diffusion of Enlightenment ideals.

Revolutions LEQ Prompts Make sure you know what the prompt is asking you to do! PROMPT 1: In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. This prompt is NOT asking you to identify causes and effects of these political revolutions. Rather, this prompt is asking you to consider how states revolutionized (changed) their societies.

Revolutions LEQ Prompts Make sure you know what the prompt is asking you to do! This prompt is NOT asking you to identify causes and effects of the Enlightenment. This prompt is NOT asking you to identify causes and effects of political revolutions. Rather, this prompt is asking you to consider how these revolutions reflected the Enlightenment (how they show influence of the Enlightenment).

LEQ First Steps 1. The first thing you need to do with the LEQ is decide which prompt you are going to be responding to. Choose the prompt you feel more comfortable responding to. 2. After you ve chosen a prompt, you need to choose a skill- either causation, comparison, or CCOT (continuity and change over time). You should choose the skill that you believe fits best with the prompt. The skill that you choose will determine what kind of LEQ you write. 3. Finally, you need to decide how specific or broad you want to make your analysis. Since both of these prompts deal with political revolutions, are you going to address Atlantic Revolutions in general? Are you going to address only the American Revolution? Are you going to address the French and Haitian Revolutions only? Make a decision.

If you choose to do a CAUSATION essay, you can address: Causes Effects Both causes and effects If you choose to do a COMPARISON essay, you can address: Similarities Differences Both similarities and differences If you choose to do a CCOT essay, you can address: Continuities over time Changes over time Both continuities and changes over time **The options in blue represent a complex understanding opportunity! These are among the options that will earn you that point. You could achieve both points for analysis (including complex understanding!)

LEQ First Steps: Choose a skill for your prompt While the prompt tells you what you should be writing about, it will not tell you which skill to choose. You are given freedom to choose the kind of LEQ you re going to write, as long as it fits what the prompt that you chose is looking for. Over the next 6 slides are some examples of what you could do with the prompt and skill that you choose.

PROMPT 1- CAUSATION ESSAY In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of CAUSATION for Prompt 1: Ways in which the effects of the French Revolution revolutionized French society Ways in which the effects of the Haitian Revolution revolutionized Haitian society Ways in which the effects of the French and Haitian revolutions revolutionized their societies Ways in which the desire to revolutionize their society were manifested in the causes of the French Revolution and reflected in the effects of that revolution These are just some of the options you could choose from!

PROMPT 1- COMPARISON ESSAY In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of COMPARISON for Prompt 1: Ways in which the French and Haitian revolutions were similar in how they revolutionized their societies Ways in which the French and Haitian revolutions were similar and different in how they revolutionized their societies Ways in which the French and American revolutions were similar and different in how they revolutionized their societies Ways in which the American and Latin American revolutions were similar and different in how they revolutionized their societies Ways in which the American and Haitian revolutions were similar and different in how they revolutionized their societies Ways in which the Latin American and Haitian revolutions were different in how they revolutionized their societies These are just some of the options you could choose from!

PROMPT 1- CCOT ESSAY In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of CCOT for Prompt 1: Ways the American Revolution revolutionized American society, and ways in which American society remained the same Ways the French Revolution revolutionized French society, and ways in which French society remained the same Ways the American and French revolutions revolutionized their societies, and ways in which their societies remained the same Ways in which the Atlantic Revolutions changed their respective societies, and ways in which their societies remained the same Ways the French Revolution changed French society Ways the French Revolution did not change French society (ways French society remained the same) Ways the French and American revolutions did not change their societies These are just some of the options you could choose from!

PROMPT 2: CAUSATION ESSAY During the period 1770-1825, increasing discontent with existing government structures and the spread of Enlightenment ideas propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. Develop an argument that evaluates how one or more revolutions during this time period reflected the rise and diffusion of Enlightenment ideals. Here are some examples of CAUSATION for Prompt 2: Ways in which the causes of the French Revolution reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the causes of the French and American revolutions reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the causes of the Atlantic revolutions reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the effects of the American Revolution reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the effects of the Latin American revolutions reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the causes and effects of the French and Haitian revolutions reflect Enlightenment ideals Ways in which the causes and effects of the Atlantic revolutions reflect Enlightenment ideals. LEQ First Steps Hopefully by now you have chosen your prompt, you understand what the prompt is asking you to do, and you have chosen a skill that you will use to structure your response to the prompt. Don t proceed unless you have a solid understanding of what you are going to be writing about. If you understand what you are doing with your essay, you are now ready to begin revising your LEQ.

Point 1: Contextualization You should begin your essay with contextualization. By doing this, your reader has a sense of what was going on prior to the topic of your essay. This basically sets up your paper by explaining the things that happened prior that led to what you are going to be writing about. What you will include in your contextualization depends on which prompt you chose: Prompt 1: Your topic is political revolutions and how states revolutionized their societies, so your context should explain what led to political revolutions. You will want to start from considering how things were in the past to how things changed leading up to revolution. What you need to include in your context depends on which revolutions you re considering in your paper. If you re only analyzing the American Revolution, then your context should focus on factors that led to that revolution. If you re analyzing both the American and French revolutions, you ll need to address things that led to both revolutions. Prompt 2: Your topic is how political revolutions reflect the rise and distribution of Enlightenment ideals. For your context, you will need to address the things that led to the Enlightenment, as well as the things that led to the political revolutions that you re analyzing in your paper. If you are only analyzing the American Revolution, you need to address what led to the Enlightenment and the American Revolution. If you re analyzing the American and French revolutions, you need to address what led to the Enlightenment, as well as the things that led to bot the American and French revolutions.

Point 1: Contextualization Some notes about contextualization: It takes rather lengthy analysis to get this point. You don t necessarily have to go into much detail here, but you do need to tell a story of the general events/developments that led to the topic of your essay. Normally it takes at least 5-6 sentences to get this point- anything less probably isn't going to get it. You need to make sure that you tell a complete story- for instance, for this LEQ, don t start with colonization and go right into revolutions with your thesis- what happened in between? Don t leave gaps!

Point 2: Thesis Your thesis statement should immediately follow your contextualization in the intro paragraph. There should be some kind of transition statement that enables your context to flow naturally into your thesis statement. Your thesis must be clearly stated- don t make your reader guess where it is! You have to have a thesis! No thesis= no argument= doesn t satisfy the prompt! Your thesis should respond directly to the prompt, without using the language of the prompt. Don t repeat the prompt! You should also structure your thesis statement around your skill. Use the language of the skill in your thesis statement. You need to identify at least 3 specific topics in your thesis as your argument in response to the prompt. These need to be topics that you can expand on in your paper.

Point 2: Thesis Here are some examples of thesis statements that would work for each essay type (Causation, Comparison, CCOT) in response to both prompts. These are just some ideas, meant to help you see how a thesis statement should look for this particular prompt.

PROMPT 1- CAUSATION ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a causation essay in response to Prompt 1. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). As evidenced by the effects of the French Revolution, the French were able to revolutionize their society by,, and. Both the French Revolution and Haitian Revolution resulted in effects that revolutionized their respective societies, including,, and. Through their effects, Atlantic revolutions did in fact result in states revolutionizing their societies by,, and.

PROMPT 1- COMPARISON ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a comparison essay in response to Prompt 1. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). The American Revolution and French Revolution were similar in how they revolutionized their societies by and, but different in how they. The Haitian and Latin American revolutions both revolutionized their societiess by and, but differed in how they and.

PROMPT 1- CCOT ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES In the period 1770-1825, challenges to the existing political order led to revolutions in the Atlantic World. Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which one or more states revolutionized their societies in this period. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a CCOT essay in response to Prompt 1. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). While both the American and French revolutions changed their societies by and, they also remained the same to the extent that they. While the Latin American revolutions did revolutionize their societies by and, they remained constant in the sense that they and.

PROMPT 2: CAUSATION ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES During the period 1770-1825, increasing discontent with existing government structures and the spread of Enlightenment ideas propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. Develop an argument that evaluates how one or more revolutions during this time period reflected the rise and diffusion of Enlightenment ideals. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a causation essay in response to Prompt 2. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). The French Revolution reflected Enlightenment ideals in its causes, as evidenced by and, as well as in its effects, as evidenced by and. The American and Haitian revolutions both reflected Enlightenment ideals with their causes of and in their effects of and.

PROMPT 2: COMPARISON ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES During the period 1770-1825, increasing discontent with existing government structures and the spread of Enlightenment ideas propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. Develop an argument that evaluates how one or more revolutions during this time period reflected the rise and diffusion of Enlightenment ideals. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a comparison essay in response to Prompt 2. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). Both the American and French revolutions reflected Enlightenment ideals by,, and. While the Haitian, French, and Latin American revolutions all shared the Enlightenment beliefs of and, they differed on the Enlightenment belief in.

PROMPT 2: CCOT ESSAY- THESIS EXAMPLES During the period 1770-1825, increasing discontent with existing government structures and the spread of Enlightenment ideas propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. Develop an argument that evaluates how one or more revolutions during this time period reflected the rise and diffusion of Enlightenment ideals. Here are some examples of thesis statements that would be acceptable if you were writing a CCOT essay in response to Prompt 2. Remember, your thesis statement will need to mention the revolutions you chose to analyze in your paper (one, two, three, or all). The French Revolution reflected Enlightenment ideals in the changes it brought to France, including,, and. The Haitian Revolution and American Revolution both reflected Enlightenment ideals as they,, and. The American Revolution embodied Enlightenment ideals as it changed and, and even as it continued.

Point 2: Thesis Your thesis provides structure for the body paragraphs in your paper. Each body paragraph should address one of the topics you identified in your thesis. Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence, which should clearly identify what is going to be addressed in that paragraph.

Point 3: Evidence (1 Point) To get this point, you need to make sure that you include plenty of specific examples (proper nouns). Don t just drop them into your paper- you need to explain them. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 2 specific examples per body paragraph- this is a minimum expectation- add more if you can.

*These examples are intended for tutorial purposes only- do not copy them in your paper!* Point 4: Evidence (2 Points) In addition to including plenty of specific examples, you need to explain how each specific example relates to your argument. You should have very distinct sentences connecting your evidence to your argument! Examples: (Prompt 1): By creating the National Assembly, the French commoners broke with the past and asserted themselves as the holders of political power. This greatly revolutionized French society, as this aspect of the revolution abolished the old regime and established a new, alternative means of political representation in France. (Prompt 2): The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen specified rights that all French citizens were entitled to, including the freedom of religion and freedom of speech. This revolutionary document clearly shows the influence of Voltaire, who as a prominent voice in the Enlightenment strongly advocated for personal freedoms.

Point 5: Analysis (1 Point)- Application of the Skill This point is awarded for your ability to adequately frame your argument using the skill you chose. You will need to provide in-depth analysis of each component of your argument. CAUSATION- You need to thoroughly analyze causes, effects, or both (whatever you chose to do in your essay) COMPARISON- You need to thoroughly analyze similarities, differences, or both (whatever you chose to do in your essay) CCOT- You need to thoroughly analyze continuities, changes, or both (whatever you chose to do in your essay)

Point 6: Analysis (2 Points)- Complex Understanding Look at the bottom of your rubric (under complex understanding) for a list of options you can choose from. Choose one of these options to show complex understanding of the topic. Remember, if you did any of the following, and you have in-depth analysis of both things, you can essentially build in complex understanding: Causation- Address both causes and effects (requires in-depth analysis of both) Comparison- Address both similarities and differences (requires in-depth analysis of both) CCOT- Address both changes and continuities (requires in-depth analysis of both)

Point 6: Analysis (2 Points)- Complex Understanding Other options to earn complex understanding: Synthesis connection- make a connection to something that s similar to something you mentioned in your essay. This could be a connection to a different region or a different time period. Fully explain the connection. Corroborate- Bring in other sources or perspectives to back up (reinforce) a claim that you made. Qualify (counter-argument)- Identify and fully explain what someone who feels differently might disagree with. What would they argue? Whichever you choose, to get the point, it takes in-depth analysis! A simple mention will not get it!
