Mazal Tov to the whole family! Are You On Our Email List? Do you want to receive the Temple Times, Our Tent news, invitations for special Temple events, and bereavement notices? Then we ll need your correct email address! Send updates to dhopkins@ suburbantemple.org. What s on Your List? Charlie, Isaac and I were fairly early adopters of the Echo Dot. This voice-controlled device ours looks like an extra thick hockey puck plays music, reports news, has game applications, a verbal search engine, the capability to control smart home products, and more. By responding to the name Alexa, it was fairly easy to allow this technology to become a ubiquitous, and fun, part of our lives. For example, we all add items to the grocery shopping list on a regular basis. Occasionally, we place items on the list to see if the rest of the family is paying attention which may not exactly be grocery items. I ve added sunshine, when the weather has been dreary for many days in a row! Recently, an item appeared on the shopping list: Peace of Mind First, I really laughed. Really, though, this was a great opportunity for a family conversation. I asked: Where does one shop to obtain peace of mind? Target. They ve got everything. came the immediate family quip. What do you buy to get peace of mind? You can t buy peace of mind, came a sarcastic reply, followed by a more thoughtful, but maybe once you ve got what s on the list, then you can focus on the important stuff, so you can then find peace of mind, because maybe you aren t so busy. Oh. What s the important stuff? I asked. Being kind. Peace of mind comes from being kind? Yep. Oh, and it sort of rhymes, too. Well, shouldn t you be kind all the time, and not just when the long list is done? Yes. But it s harder when there is a list, right? Hmmm. Yes, I think so. Maybe we should try harder. Maybe we should leave it on the list. Ok. Good idea. This family joke turned into a powerful family reminder and lesson. Chesed is one of the most important Hebrew words for kindness and is found throughout our Jewish texts. The prophet Micah reminds us of what God expects of us when he preaches, What does your God ask of you, [except] that you do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God? With whatever lists we make let s remember the important stuff: being kind. Rabbi Allison Vann avann@suburbantemple.org

From Brett s Desk Making Time For Our Congregational Relationships As I write this, I am preparing to fly to Florida to visit members of Suburban Temple Kol Ami together with Rabbi Vann. Other than desperately needing a break from the cold, you may ask why are we going to Florida? It s simple really community. Our holy Suburban Temple Kol Ami community is based on hundreds of relationships, each one precious and each one deserving of being nurtured. For some, it s easy, Rabbi Vann, Rabbi Shana, or I see you regularly at Friday night services, or a board or committee meeting. There s a regular back and forth. For others, we don t see you as often. And for our snowbirds, it s often even tougher to get together. Hence, our trip. The five days spent in Florida will allow us to meet individually and in small groups with well over 20 families. We will renew and strengthen ST-KA s connection, provide information about current events and future planning at ST-KA. If you are a snowbird and we didn t see you, let s try for next year. Please be sure that we have your Florida contact information! If you re wintering in Cleveland and we haven t seen you in a while, please drop me a note (bshankman@suburbantemple.org) and we ll make time to see you! On another note, there are many wonderful programs coming up on the ST-KA calendar and while I hope you can join us at all of them, I m not quite that naïve. I do want to call your attention to three. Friday, March 23 Shabbat Services with the Gay Men s Chorus of Washington, DC. There s a full ad below, however, I want to point out that ST-KA is the only venue in Cleveland where this 140-member chorus will perform. Please make every effort to join us! Saturday Sunday, April 21 22 Our first Our Tent congregational retreat, themed Jewniversal Studios. Rabbi Shana along with Rabbi Vann and other teachers have planned an outstanding overnight retreat. Space is limited! Please register now. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 7 9 board member Lori Rosenberg is chairing Reaching Out: Spirituality and the LGBTQ Community. I strongly encourage you learn more about the program at our website, www.suburbantemple.org/ reachingout and to join us at one or more of the programs. I look forward to seeing you at Temple soon. Please join us on March 23 at 6 pm for a special Shabbat. The Gay Men s Chorus of Washington, DC will join us in worship and participate in our service with song. 2

From our Director of Lifelong Learning So Much To Celebrate! This month marks the end to our third trimester of Our Tent s Sunday Morning program, and while we still have some Adult Ed classes and Learning Shabbats, it is hard to believe that our inaugural year is almost over! It seems like just yesterday, with great enthusiasm, we were launching the program. There have been so many moments to celebrate this year! We not only reached, but surpassed our attendance goals each trimester! We created a true Kehilah Kedosha a holy community where people got to know each other over a bagel and chose their classes based on what their friends were taking! We all learned to pray, not only with our voices and our hearts, but with our hands as well, as we learned to sign some of the prayers and made our community even more inclusive! We had over 80 people attend our first Tikkun Olam Coffee House and Showcase as we presented our learning and began our partnership with the Kids Book Bank! We welcomed back beloved faculty, and also welcomed new teachers and faculty members! And each Sunday our building was filled with a ruach, a spirit, that cannot be described, but was certainly felt! With so much to celebrate, we wanted to end our year in a big way! Hence Jewniversal Studios: Our Jewish Values Retreat at Punderson. We came up with the name because we want the learning to be meaningful, but also to be fun like and amusement park! We will gather from noon on Saturday, April 21 through noon on Sunday, April 22. We will create a Jewish Values playground where as individuals or in small groups you can learn about the different values our Torah teaches us through games, activities, and thoughtprovoking questions. Are you addicted to the new HQ trivia game? If you are, you will LOVE our evening program. If you are not, we promise you will also love our evening program, and you will be addicted by the time it is over! Sunday, morning will include a text study with Rabbi Vann for those early risers, and an escape room activity for all! We will of course share plenty of food, free time, and fun together as well. Space is limited, so sign-up today! (Cost is $65/adult, $35/kid, and $130 for a single room this program is made possible by a generous grant from the Retreat Institute and The Jewish Education Center of Cleveland). With so much gratitude for all who made this program and this year possible! Greetings from Kol Nashim! Shalom! Kol Nashim has been keeping warm and busy during the winter months. In January we celebrated Rosh Chodesh and Tu B Shevat, had a lively book club discussion and served dinner at New Life Calvary Church. Our annual Women s Shabbat service and dinner in February certainly brought smiles to many faces as we shared in worship, sisterhood, laughter and dinner see the photos on our Facebook page! We look forward to seeing you at our March Madness events: Thursday, March 8 Book Club Discussion Anna and the Swallow Man When her father is taken in the purge of intellectuals from Krakow in 1939, Anna is 7 years old and alone in a city with little kindness left to spare. She meets a mysterious man with more promise than those her family once called friends, and together they set off with urgency to go away rather than toward anything. Winding through the back forests of Poland with Anna and her Swallow Man the only name he will give her we catch glimpses into the minds of an academic and a highly intellectual child as they attempt to survive the impossible circumstances of an escalating World War together.
