College Heights United Methodist Church The Lamplighter November & December 2018 Goal 2. Continue to increase annual participation in Mission Share. Status: Still working. Our church paid only 6 % in 2015, but 13% in 2016 and 77% in 2017. We had an increase our mission share each year. Greetings! Happy and blessed November and December to you. I want to share our church report with you, including our vision and goals for the Church Conference this year 2018. What a year it s been! We ve worked hard and well together to make our church a place of vital ministry. I offer my profound thanksgiving to God for blessing us, and to each of you for your faithful service to the Lord. This year, our church has been working to move forward and upward, and I m happy to share with you that together, we ve generated many signs of vitality and fruitfulness. Our vision is Catch the Light at College Heights and let it be a light to our community. We have three goals this year: Goal 1. Increase worship attendance by 5%. Status: Goal met. Average attendance increased from 41 in 2017 to 44 on 2018. Goal 3. Increase participation in small groups. Status: In progress. Wednesday Lunch Bible study group continues, as do the Friends & Family activities (the children s program), and we attempted to establish a men s group. In September, we formed a college students Bible study. As a pastor, I am choosing to do the following: Pray to change the church culture from a survival and maintenance mode to a missional and transformational focus. Pray that we become a more inclusive church for all God s people. Pray that we become a truly welcoming church. Pray for more people to be engaged in various ministries. We are focusing our energy and resources on developing ministries to attract and welcome more new people, young people, and diverse people in 1
our community. Our church is blessed by the presence of its many good, faithful, effective, and generous lay leaders. They carry a heavy load with passion and dedication. But we will need to develop still more leaders who can join us in vitalizing our current ministries and developing new and innovative ones. Our church s future looks bright because we know God is with us and leading us. I am grateful for being able to serve as your pastor. It is good to be here among you. I applaud all our church leaders and members who have given their labor of love so faithfully to vitalize our church and its ministry. Thank you for your dedication and fruitful work. Thank you, thank you, and thank you! May God continue to guide us on our path as we seek to love and serve God with 100% of our hearts and lives. God bless you all. United Methodist Student Day will be celebrated on Nov. 25th. Across the country, the people of The United Methodist Church are serving the people God loves in Jesus name. We re doing it at home, but so often we d like to do more. We want to serve those in other places who are suffering. We want to offer spiritual words of hope and life. And we want to be well-equipped to do both! But the reality for most of us is that our responsibilities home, family, work don t allow us to engage with every need we d like to meet. Right now there are UMC young people who might not have had the resources to attend a school of their choice, or, for some, any school at all who ve been sent by you into the world God loves because of your giving to United Methodist Student Day. When you give generously you are support these students as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge. November 25th All are invited to stay and help with the Hanging of the Greens immediately following worship. ============================== CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM When: December 9th During church service plan to join us in celebrating the birth of JESUS!!! Christmas Caroling December 15 (Saturday) We will go Christmas caroling on Dec. 15th and will finish caroling with soup at the church. Please plan to join us. This is how our mission share money is divided: The new Great Plains Conference Funding Plan is broken into five sections to accommodate our missional priorities and to start fresh with the setting of accounts and the adoption of best administrative processes and practices. In addition to these five main sections, there is a small fund for missional opportunities included in the budget that will allow us the flexibility to address emerging needs at the time they arise. Episcopal Office This section accounts for the expenses of episcopacy committee functions and the episcopal residence. Expenses for cabinet and district personnel and operations also is found in this section. Clergy Excellence This section accounts for the personnel, program and operational expenses for Clergy Excellence and includes the Board of Ordained Ministry, Transition into Ministry, Administrative Review and Investigation for Diaconal Ministry. Congregational Excellence The core of our work with congregations is accounted for in this section. It includes lay leadership development, campus, camp and youth ministries, our work with under-served populations and new church starts. Office, personnel and program expenses also are included. Mercy and Justice Personnel and operational expenses for this section enable the conference to attend to acts mercy through Volunteers in Mission and disaster recovery as well as boldly step out on systemic justice issues and local ethnic concerns. Administrative Services Personnel, program and operational costs for information technology, communications, the accounting offices, pension and health benefits and annual conference session expenses reside in this section of the Funding Plan. ============================= NOVEMBER 2018 For each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything Thy goodness sends. -Ralph Waldo Emerson 4

Be prepared, before the storm strikes! At home and at work, primary concerns are the potential loss of heat, power, telephone service and a shortage of supplies if storm conditions persist. You should have available: A flashlight and extra batteries. Battery-powered NOAA weather radio and portable radio to receive emergency information. These may be your only links to the outside. Extra food and water. High-energy food, such as dried fruit or candy, and food requiring no cooking or refrigeration is best. Extra medicine and baby items. First aid supplies. Heating fuel. Fuel carriers may not reach you for days after a severe winter storm. Emergency heating source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc. Learn to use properly to prevent a fire, and be sure to have proper ventilation. Fire extinguisher and smoke detector. Test your units regularly to ensure they are working properly.
In cars and trucks, plan your travel and check the latest weather reports to avoid the storm! Fully check and winterize your vehicle before the winter season begins. Carry a winter storm survival kit including the following items: Blankets/sleeping bags Flashlight with extra batteries First-aid kit Knife High-calorie, non-perishable food Extra clothing to keep dry A large empty can and plastic cover with tissues and paper towels for sanitary purposes A can, candles and water-proof matches to melt snow for drinking water Sack of sand (or cat litter) Shovel Windshield scraper and brush Tool kit Tow rope Booster cables Water container Compass and road maps. There will be food, study, discussion and fellowship. Gratitude, Like Faith, Is a Muscle The more you use it, the stronger it grows, and the more power you have to use it on your behalf. If you do not practice gratefulness, it s benefaction will go unnoticed, and your capacity to draw on gifts will be diminished. To be grateful is to find blessings in everything. This is the most powerful attitude to adopt, for there are blessings in everything. ~Alan Cohen
