The Empty Tomb Easter Sunrise April 16, 2017
Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary Ruth Marschel, Organist ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Jesus lives! Death and the grave could not hold Him! Easter changes everything! Here we see the guarantee that our sins have been forgiven and Satan eternally defeated. In faith, we believe Christ s resurrection ensures our own, and we hold to the blessed assurance that all who have died in the Lord will rise on the Last Day. By faith, we are able to look beyond this broken world and even beyond death and the grave because of Christ s empty tomb discovered early that first Easter Day. Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: God of glory, by the raising of your Son you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with faith and hope; for a new day has dawned and the way to life stands open in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen THE DIVINE SERVICE HYMN Jesus Christ is Risen Today LW127 OPENING SENTENCES Based on Psalm 118 This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 2
Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION and EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:51 57 The Lord has made this day one of rejoicing and gladness because on it He destroyed death. But we must pause in our rejoicing because it was for our sins that He paid with His life. Assured of the Father s acceptance of Christ s sacrifice for us, let us confess our sins to our gracious Lord. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for selfexamination. Heavenly Father, we confess that although we have heard the gracious news of Jesus resurrection, we have not responded with lives that reflect our journey to heaven. We are sinful from birth and have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have feared the forces of evil and not let the truth of Easter instruct our decisions. We have lived as if survival was a matter of our cunning, instead of relying on You for all things in time and into eternity. For Jesus sake, forgive us, let Easter s light dawn in us again, and grant us strength both to walk in Your ways and also to share Easter joy to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. 3
Paul writes, Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMNS OF PRAISE and PSALM Psalm 118:15 29 Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: The right hand of the LORD does valiantly, the right hand of the LORD exalts, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly! HYMN Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice St. 1: LW 353 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice 4
And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God has done, How his right arm the victory won. What price our ransom cost him! I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. The LORD has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. HYMN Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty St. 1: LW 198 Open now thy gates of beauty, Zion, let me enter there, Where my soul in joyful duty Waits for God, who answers prayer. Oh, how blessed is this place, Filled with solace, light, and grace! This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank You that You have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. HYMN Christ Is Our Cornerstone St. 1: LW 290 Christ is our cornerstone, On him alone we build; With his true saints alone The courts of heaven are filled. On his great love Our hopes we place Of present grace And joys above. 5
This is the LORD s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. HYMN This Is the Day the Lord Has Made St. 1: LW 200 This is the day the Lord has made; He calls the hours his own. Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, Let praise surround the throne. Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. The LORD is God, and He has made His light to shine upon us. HYMN This Is the Day the Lord Has Made St. 4: LW 200 Blest be the Lord, who comes to us With messages of grace; Who comes in God his Father s name To save our sinful race. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to You; You are my God; I will extol You. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! SALUTATION The Lord be with you. 6
And also with you. Let us Pray Almighty God, through Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life.we humbly pray that we may live before You in righteousness and purity forever; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Exodus 14:10 15:1 (Through the Lord s power, Moses leads God s people as they cry out for deliverance.) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN I Know That My Redeemer Lives LW 264 HOLY GOSPEL John 20:1 18 (The news of the resurrection dawns slowly.) The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 20 th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. THE APOSTLES CREED 7
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN The Day of Resurrection LW 133 (Sung to TLH 205) SERMON OFFERING OFFERTORY Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me, Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for ourselves and the Church around the world, people near and dear to us, and all who live on God s good earth. 8
Let us pray for all who have the news of Easter written on their hearts. Heavenly Father, give the Church around the world pen and ink, pulpit and opportunity, chisel and stone, and media of every sort, to proclaim that our Redeemer lives, and that we shall see Him for ourselves. Lord, hear our heartfelt prayer, and let the light of Easter dawn upon us. Let us pray for all who find their bodies weakening, their minds clouding, and their faith unsure. Lord Jesus, work healing through doctors, nurses, and emergency personnel; renewal through counselors, care givers, and supportive communities; and confident trust through clergy and laity bearing the sure hope of the resurrection. Lord, hear our heartfelt prayer, and let the light of Easter shine upon us. Let us pray for all who face this day without adequate food, clothing, and shelter, all who are oppressed unjustly, all who labor under injustice and oppression, and all who are forgotten in the midst of plenty. O Holy Spirit, imbue those who make, administer, and adjudicate laws here and around the world with hearts set on caring for the poor and downtrodden. Raise up leaders to rule righteously, giving You the glory for every improvement in the lives of those they are called to serve. Lord, hear our heartfelt prayer, and let the light of Easter grow within us. 9
Let us pray for ourselves and all who come to the Table of the Lord this day, trusting in the forgiveness, life, and salvation which the Sacrament brings to people of faith. Lord of life, strengthen us so that we may confidently receive by faith our Savior s body and blood under this bread and wine, looking forward to seeing Him face to face in His eternal banquet. Lord, hear our heartfelt prayer, and let the light of Easter be evident in us. Let us give thanks for those who, like Mary, Peter, and John, have gone before us in faith and now live in endless light with all the company of heaven. Eternal God, as You brought them to faith in Your boundless grace, so let the truth of Christ s resurrection strengthen the faith You have placed within us. Comfort with Easter light all who mourn, dry their tears of sadness, and bring them to renewed peace and joy. Lord, hear our heartfelt prayer, and let the light of Easter shine through us. These and any other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant us for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth 10
as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. HYMN With High Delight Let Us Unite LW 134 CLOSING COLLECT Blessed Lord, who has caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by the patience and comfort of Thy holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life which You have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen. BENEDICTION The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. 11

You Have Been Raised Up EASTER SUNDAY April 16, 2017
Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Easters come and go, and it seems that little changes. Or does it? What we sing and celebrate today is already ours. We were baptized into His death and raised with Christ to new and everlasting life. Easter is the celebration not only of Christ s victory but also of our own victory in Christ Jesus, our Savior. Christ is risen, and we with Him. It is a victory already ours but not yet fully complete in us. Part of Christian life is seeing who we are and the life we live in the context of the baptismal miracle of new identity and new life that we have been given. Every day we grasp this gift by faith and remember it is for me. We wear a new name and are heirs of an eternal victory and a life that death cannot overcome. How might our lives change if we lived out this glorious Easter truth more than one day a year? PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honor, glory and might, now and in all eternity. Amen. THE DIVINE SERVICE Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! 2
HYMN Jesus Christ Is Risen Today LW 127 INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE CONFESSION OF SINS Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our Help is in the name of the Lord. Who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended you and justly deserved your punishment now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray you of your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being. Upon this your confession I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you 3
all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Amen. INTROIT (spoken by all) I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them by Your strength to Your holy abode. You will bring them in and plant them on Your own mountain, the place, O LORD, which You have made for Your abode, the sanctuary, O LORD, which Your hands have established. The LORD will reign forever and ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. KYRIE ALL: Lord have mercy on us, Christ have mercy on us, Lord have mercy on us. 4
HYMN OF PRAISE "This is the Feast of Victory" LW page 161 Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, Whose blood set us free to be people of God? (Refrain) Power, riches, wisdom and strength, And honor blessing and glory are his. (Refrain) Sing with all the people of God And join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing, honor, glory, and might Be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. (Refrain) For the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. (Refrain) SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Mighty Lord, Your own Son left the darkness of the grave to rise and show forth His glorious body as the firstborn of the dead. As You have united us to the cross of Christ by Baptism, so 5
raise us up to newness of life that we may recall our Lord s resurrection with joy and live it out by the power of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING Acts 10:34 43 (They hanged Him on a cross, and God raised Him from the dead.) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CHOIR Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven EPISLTE Colossians 3:1-4 (If you have been raised with Christ, see the Things that are above) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. VERSE 2 Timothy 1:10b Alleluia. Christ Jesus abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 28:1 10 (He is not here; He has arisen.) The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 6
(The Gospel is read.) CREED This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the onlybegotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission 7
of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN I Know that My Redeemer Lives LW 264 SERMON OFFERING OFFERTORY (LW page 143) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen PRAYER OF THE CHURCH PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE 8
It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: HYMN Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds LW 131 Now let the vault of heaven resound In praise of Love that doth abound, 'Christ hath triumphed! alleluia' Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear, Repeat their song of glory here, 'Christ hath triumphed, Christ hath triumphed!' Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Adoring praises now we bring And with the heavenly blessèd sing, 'Christ hath triumphed and he liveth!' Be to the Father and our Lord, To Spirit blest, most holy God, Thine the glory never ending! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING 9
We give You thanks, almighty God, because You loved Your creation even when Your people loved You not. You sent forth the promise of our redemption and kept this promise alive through the ages by the prophets until Your Word became flesh in Your Son, Jesus Christ. You revealed Him as Your own Son in the flesh, who for us and for our salvation lived perfectly the life we were created to live and died to offer the perfect sacrifice to pay our debt to sin. As He was raised to life on Easter Sunday and lives even now to save all who call upon His name, prepare us that we may rejoice in His victory, live in Him by Baptism and faith, and receive His very gift of Himself in this blest communion. LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes.1 Corinthians 11:26 Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 PAX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you all. Amen. Come, risen Lord, live in us that we may live in You. 10
HYMN At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing LW 126 At the Lamb's high feast we sing praise to our victorious King, who has washed us in the tide flowing from his wounded side. Praise we Christ, whose love divine gives his sacred blood for wine, gives his body for the feast - Christ the victim, Christ the priest. Easter triumph, Easter joy, this alone can sin destroy! From sin's power, Lord, set us free, new-born souls in you to be. Father, who the crown shall give; Savior, by whose death we live; Spirit, guide through all our days; Three in One, your name we praise. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing LW 129 The Day of Resurrection LW 133 Christ the Lord is Risen Today, Alleluia LW 137 POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good! His mercy endures forever! Bless we the Lord! Thanks be to God! 11
Let us pray. Almighty God, You did not abandon Your people to the sin and death we freely chose, but You sent Your own Son to save us. By His death and resurrection, we have been rescued from our sin and delivered from death. When we were baptized, You marked us as the people of Your promise and gave us new and everlasting life. Help us to rejoice in this good news and daily live in this grace and hope for our sake and for the sake of the world. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. Quote from Martin Luther based on John 20:1 18 (April 16) If I should feel sin, death, and evil and nothing good in my flesh, I must nevertheless believe in the kingdom of Christ. For the kingdom of Christ does not have its place in the senses. The treasure lies in the certainty of life. Feelings of despair and afflictions have to do with the sack (i.e. body), for they are done externally. Therefore whoever is tormented in his feeling by sin and death, let him rise again in the Word and kingdom of Christ and say, My Christ lives.
