YWCA s General Secretary, Rosalie Fawkes makes a presentation to Mrs. Marjorie Bullard, tour guide. A Visit to Adelaide Village In March 2012, Y members accompanied by Bahamas Galaxy Pageant contestants visited one of the oldest settlements in New Providence: Adelaide Village. The village was established by Sir James Carmichael Smith (Governor of The Bahamas) in 1832. After the abolition of the slave trade, liberated Africans were sent to live in Adelaide and other villages. Walking past the silk cotton tree Y members enjoyed worshiping at the parish church, St. James and then went for a leisurely stroll through the street leading to the beach. The rich coppice, the silk cotton trees dating back to the days of slavery and the quiet, tranquil beach made for a pleasant Sunday visitation.

Y Teens at H.O. Nash In October of 2004, the YWCA embarked on a community outreach program and invited the students at H.O. Nash Junior High School to participate in Y Teens, a leadership program for girls and boys in grades seven through nine. Y Teens Art Exhibition The Y Teens program at H.O. Nash ended the 2008 school year (July) with a successful art exhibition enjoyed by all in attendance. The Bahamas YWCA expresses appreciation to the Bank of The Bahamas for hosting the reception and for the generous assistance that they provided in the preparation of the art pieces for presentation. Additionally the bank also made a five hundred dollar contribution to the Bahamas YWCA. The Y also acknowledges and thanks Mrs. Desiree Aranha for helping with the co-ordination of the event and Mr. Willard Capron, Head of Art Department at H.O. Nash, for the guidance and support given to the students throughout the year. Students from H.O. Nash Art Department sit in front of a mural that they painted in the YWCA s Activity Center. At far right is the late Mr. Willard Capron, former Head of the Art Department at H.O. Nash Junior High School.

Of the several art pieces that were submitted for consideration, Daniella s drawing titled, Two Faces was the winning entry. Her message to everyone was that we are all one and should strive to live together in peace and unity. The art work depicts two persons from different ethnic backgrounds garbed in Junkanoo(a Bahamian Christmas festival) costumes.

Trade Venture with the YWCA of Rwanda -2010 In 2010, The Bahamas YWCA commenced a trade venture with the YWCA of Rwanda when it received a shipment of arts and crafts from that association. The YWCA of Rwanda was established in 1994 in response to the genocide which left countless widows and orphans in its wake. The revenue from the craft helps these persons to take care of their families, pay school fees and obtain supplementary food and medical supplies.
