[So far in 1 John we have discovered that there is:] [A Communion To Cherish Our common ground in Christ.] [A Covenant To Proclaim The glory of the gospel] [A Cleansing To Receive The forgiveness of sins] [A Commandment To Keep Obey God s Word and will] [A Caution To Heed Love not the world and its things] [A Character To Develop Be conformed to His image] [A Confidence To Hold Defeating Doubt] [A Confusion To Face Spiritual Warfare] [A Compassion To Show The Fact of God s Love, The Characteristics of God s love, The Presence in God s Love. Love is a Person.] [A Conviction That Overcomes You can know that you are saved.] [A Conviction That Witnesses The Witness of God within and in heaven.] [A Commanding Confidence We Know that we Know that we are saved.] [Today we come to one of the most precious gifts given to every born again Christian. That is the powerful gift of Prayer.] [E.M. Bounds once wrote 1 ] ["Child of God, can you pray? Are your prayers answered? If not, why not? Answered prayer is the proof of real praying." (TPP,85)] ["To pray and receive clear answers, not once or twice, but daily this is the sure test, and is the gracious point of our vital connection with Jesus Christ." (TPP,86)] [Samuel Chadwick once said, The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray. ] 1 E.M. Bounds, "The Possibilities Of Prayer [TPP], (Grand Rapids, Baker Book House, 1979). The E.M. Bounds set of books on prayer is an excellent set of reading materials for every Christian to read. Page 1 of 9

[Cameron Thompson once wrote, God has a shorless ocean of response to the feeblest whisper of the faintest saint, if it be but from a heart contrite and cleansed, and if it be but in utter dependence on the resistless name of the Lord Jesus Christ. ] [Child of God do you understand the importance of prayer, do you realize the Power of Prayer, do you understand your need to be in prayer!] [Yet Many Christians seem to be satisfied to be prayerless, Charles Spurgeon once said,] Phil 4.6 [ Dost thou want nothing? Then, I fear thou dost not know thy poverty. Hast thou no mercy to ask of God? Then, may the Lord's mercy show thee thy misery! A prayerless soul is a Christless soul. Prayer is the lisping of the believing infant, the shout of the fighting believer, the requiem of the dying saint falling asleep in Jesus. It is the breath, the watchword, the comfort, the strength, the honor of a Christian. 2 ] [The Word of God says,] [Luke 18:1 And he [The Lord Jesus Christ] spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;] [Our Lord then taught the parable of the unrighteous judge and went on to say,] [Luke 18:7-8 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?] [If there is anything we learn from the Word of God it is that our Heavenly Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit of God are all engaged in the prayers of the Children of God. God hears your prayers! Are you Praying?] [The Word of God states,] [Philippians 4:6-7 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And 2 Charles H. Spurgeon, MORNING AND EVENING, (Peabody, Hendrickson Publishers, 1991), 4). Page 2 of 9

Matt 6.5 the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ] [There is nothing beyond your sincere, heartfelt prayer. Are you calling out to your Heavenly Father with unfettered surrender. Are you pouring out your heart to Almighty-God.] [Child of God are you a praying Christian?] [Our text says,] [1 John 5:14-15 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.] From this we understand, A. We must be Calling Christians (vs 14; Matt 6.5-6; Gal 6.2) [-... if we ask... Christian are you asking of God? Are you calling out to God? Are you constantly and incessantly reaching out to God in Prayer?] [Do you have,] [A Private Time with God every day?] [Matthew 6:5-6 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.] [I think many Christian s are weak in prayer because they do not have a real relationship with our Heavenly Father. Remember that one of the marks of the New Birth reveales in the book of First John is communion or fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ. That fellowship is realized through intimate, personal communication with God. That is none other than prayer.] [Many people only pray if there is someone to hear their prayers. After all what good is it to speak if no one is listening. Do you realize that God is listening to your prayers and responding? They are not truly in touch with Page 3 of 9

God. They are not really walking with our Lord Jesus Christ. For they are not experiencing the relationship that permeates the quickened, born again life.] [If you can enter into PRIVATE prayer and enter into a conversation with Almighty-God, then you know that you are really in fellowship with God. If private prayer is empty, hollow, one-sided, and seems foolish then you evidence that you are not in sweet communion with our Lord at all.] A. We must be Calling Christians [Real, effective, powerful prayer is prayer prayed in absolute privacy and secrecy. When it s just you and God and undeniably meaningful.] [Let us always be reminded that prayer is not one sided communication, but it is communication in its fullest sense, two way, full duplex, and from the heart and mind.] [A Pronounced Time With God Everyday I mean by this that you are actually calling out to God.] o [You are making your Petitions to God To make petition is to reveal your desires and to pray about your felt needs to God. You are praying for those things that surround you. Those decisions you will make today. Those discouragements you are facing today. Your sorrows and your hurts.] [Who in life do you share your petitions or concern with? Those you know really love you and that you trust. For some they would sadly sad, I have no one to share my petitions with? Are you so out of touch with God?!] o [You are making Intercessions to God To intercede is to pray about the needs of others. This is to lift those around you up in prayer. We are commanded,] [Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.] Page 4 of 9

[You are never helping another person as much as when you are praying for them, when you are interceding. ] o [You are giving Thanks Giving to God I have always said, if you cannot find anything else to pray for then you can always give thanksgiving to God. Thank God for absolutely everything.] [Do you have a job, then thank god for the ability to work and the provision of work.] A. We must be Calling Christians Petitions Intercessions Phil 4.6 [Do you have a home, then thank God for giving you shelter.] [Are you breathing, then thank God for a breath of fresh air.] [We could thank God moment by moment for everything that is in our lives and never cease.] [You are Calling Out to God? Our text states if we ask? Christian are you calling out to God? Are you praying? Are you asking? We must pray without ceasing and never faint in prayer.] B. We must be Candid Christians (vs 14; Philip 4.6-7) [-... if we ask any thing... - Our text tells us what we have already heard in this message. We must be asking for anything and everything.] [Philippians 4:6-7 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ] [A child of God should be talking to God about absolutely everything. There is nothing that is too big for God and nothing that is too small for God. There is nothing that is too persistent for God. There is nothing that is to feeble for God.] [If it is in your life then you can and should pray about it.] [This expresses the nearness of God to you every moment of your day and life. God is with you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Your Heavenly Father knows all of the details surrounding your current situation and Page 5 of 9

He is eternally wise. If your best friend is there when you are making an important decision would you ask for his opinion? Well your Heavenly Father is there why don t you just ask Him.] [Be Candid with your Heavenly Father, be instant with Him in prayer. Ask Him anything and everything and He will give you an answer.] C. We must be Conformed Christians (vs 14; James 5.14-16; Isa 59.2) [-... if we ask any thing according to his will, - When we pray we must pray in accordance with our Heavenly Father s will.] [Now, someone will ask, How do I know the will of God? Even more how do I know the will of God in an unexpected instance? Actually the answer is simple and somewhat obvious.] A. We must be Calling Christians B. We must be Candid Christians [Have you ever heard a teenager say, If I do that my father or mother will kill me? Now they don t mean they will be stoned to death, they are saying, if I do that I will be in trouble with my parents. How do they know that in that vary instance? They know because of the long relationship they have had with their parents. They just know the will of their parents.] [It s somewhat the same between a husband and wife. Sometimes someone will be talking to a man and ask him a question and the wife will inject the answer for him before he has the chance to answer and he will just kind of nod. How did she know that, because of the long relationship that husband and wife has had.] [It s really no different in your relationship with your Heavenly Father. As you have walked in your Christian Journey, have studied God s Word, enjoyed the fellowship and edification of your Church, and developed an intimate relationship with God you will come to the point where you just know the will of God, and it becomes easy to pray in the will of God.] [Our text is revealing to us the truth of Powerful Praying which is, the most powerful prayers are those prayers that start in heaven and are returned to heaven. When we pray something that we know is in the will of God, we can rest assured that God will soon answer that prayer.] Page 6 of 9

[Now this does not mean that we will always know how God will answer every prayer. But He does teach us how to pray in most situations. Our Heavenly Father reveals much about his will toward us in His Holy Word the Bible.] James 5.14 [For instance, Brother John Parker is at home today, possibly dying of liver cancer. We all love Him dearly and from our hearts we want and wish that our Heavenly Father would miraculously heal Him. Now, God can, and ultimately will heal brother John. So how should we pray for our dear brother in Christ? Just as the Word of God instructs us. ] [James 5:14-16 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.] A. We must be Calling Christians B. We must be Candid Christians C. We must be Conformed Christians [We are to pray for John s healing and in faith know that God will raise our brother up. Whether he is raised up in this mortal life or in his eternal life, either way God will have answered that prayer. Praise God! And we should not be discouraged by either result.] [We must pray as Conformed Christians seeking and satisfied by our Heavenly Father s will and response.] [Conformed in Life - By-the-way you need to know that if you are going to pray in the will of God them you must pray while living a life conformed to the will of God too. Because nothing will separate our prayers from God as much as sin in a Christian s life.] [Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.] [If you really want your prayers to have power with God then you must live a life of holiness and righteousness before your Heavenly Father. You must not only pray in the will of God but you must live in the will of God too.] [Don t let sin make your prayers powerless.] Page 7 of 9

D. We will be Confident Christians (vs 14) [-... if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: - Now when we pray in conformity to the will of our Lord then we can live in confidence and joy. Our Heavenly promises that He will hear all of our prayers. ] [Someone might say, Pastor, I understand what this verse in the Bible clearly says, but often it does not seem like God is hearing and answering my prayers. ] [It s certainly not that God is not hearing your prayers. Our Heavenly Father hears all of the prayers of His born again children.] A. We must be Calling Christians - Asking B. We must be Candid Christians C. We must be Conformed Christians [It s also not that God is not answering your prayers, it is that He does not always answer in the way we want Him to answer us. ] [Often when we pray we have a particular answer in mind and if God does not answer the way we want Him to answer then we like to say, Well, God didn t answer my prayer. The truth is that God answered you, you just didn t like His answer.] [God answers every prayer. ] [Sometimes our Heavenly Father says,] [Yes! I ll give it to you just the way you have asked for it. By-the-way be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it.] [Yes. Just not right now.] [Yes, but not that way.] [No.] [If we are in touch with our Heavenly Father, and pray in the will of our Heavenly Father then He will hear and answer our prayers.] E. We will be Crowned Christians (vs 15) [ And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. There is nothing more satisfying to a child of God then for them to know that their Heavenly Father is hearing and answering their prayers.] [Answered prayer is like a crown for every Christian. It gives us confidence in prayer and peace and joy in life.] Page 8 of 9

[My brothers and sisters in Christ let us live a life in intimate fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ!] [Let us walk with Him and talk with Him and hear Him say that we are His own.] [What a glorious Christian Journey that will be day by day.] [Are you a Calling Christian?] [Are you a Praying Christian?] [Are you a Christian?] CrossRoads Baptist Church, August 9, 2015 A. We must be Calling Christians - Asking B. We must be Candid Christians C. We must be Conformed Christians D. We must be Confident Christians E. We will be Crowned Christians Page 9 of 9
