Pentecost THE PASTOR S CORNER: PENTECOST Our first big feast after Easter is the Solemnity of Pentecost. This is the day that the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles and they were given the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles were able to then preach the Gospel and spread the word of God. This gift is given to us, as well. It helps us walk out of the church doors and share the words and traditions of our faith with the rest of the world. One of the best ways to evangelize to those who are seeking Christ is to be merciful and personally invite them to church. On this feast of Pentecost, find it in your heart to spread the love of Christ to those in your life. It seems hard to do, but you ll be amazed when that one person says, Yes! Someone may be waiting to be asked, and this is the perfect time to use the gifts we ve been given through the Holy Spirit, letting that fire burn within us as Christians and share our faith. One person that said yes, and I am so glad he will be celebrating his First Mass at one of the parishes in our region, is Fr. Craig Best. It is so exciting that one of our own parishioners has become a priest! Amen? Amen! Please pray for those men ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ this weekend: Fr. eastside faith A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams John 20:19-23 As the Father sent me, so I send you: Receive the Holy Spirit. We can t do it on our own! God gives us the gift of life so as to live for his glory, loving him and our neighbor as we have been loved, but we can t do that without his help. Knowing us, and knowing our desire to live our lives for his sake, he sends the Holy Spirit to us so that with his help we can love to the point of laying down our lives. When we open ourselves to God s grace trying each day to get rid of those little obstacles in our thoughts, words, and actions that get in the way of God s presence in our lives and trying to do what we can to draw closer to God in prayer then the Holy Spirit can cause all that we do to bear fruit. He fills us with his gifts, especially when we pray that these gifts become a real part of who we are, when we beg him to fill our hearts not with the things of the world but rather with the things of God. May our celebration of Pentecost renew in our hearts the desire for God s presence in our lives, and may it strengthen the bond he established at our confirmation so that our lives may bear the fruits that speak of the goodness and love of God for all. Becoming Catholic. Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215. Credo (I Believe) Vice & Virtue Seven Capital Sins and their Corresponding Virtues Vice is a habit or tendency toward a life-blocking behavior like pride. Virtue is a tendency that helps you to practice a life-giving behavior like humility. Instead of trying to control the vice (pride), be intentional about practicing its opposite virtue (humility). In this way you allow an obstacle to become the opportunity for growth. 1. Pride: excessive self-love, an exaggerated opinion of self, arrogance, a sense of entitlement. Humility: Christian self-esteem, truthful opinion of self, crediting God for successes and talents, appreciation for others. 2. Covetousness: avarice, greed, excessive desire for wealth and possessions. Generosity: free gift of time, talent, or money for the good of others; stewardship. 3. Lust: excessive desire for sexual pleasure, reducing people to objects for personal gratification. Chastity: control of sexual desires by conforming them to right reason and the Christian faith; modesty. 4. Anger: emotion that resists anything displeasing; leads to quarreling, hatred, and violence. Meekness: mildness, gentleness, Christian courage, does the right with calm courage, controls anger, bears suffering without complaint. 5. Gluttony: excessive desire of food or drink. Temperance: moderate use of food and drink, avoids overindulgence. 6. Envy: Resentment of another s success, happiness over another s failure or misfortune. Charity: love of others shown through prayer, acts of kindness, and encouraging words. 7. Sloth: laziness; neglect of religious obligations, social responsibilities, or personal duties. Diligence: persevering effort, faithfulness to tasks, industry. Aristotle remarked: We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Make it your habit to trust in God who will never disappoint. Trust in yourself for you are made in the image of God. Pensamientos Evangélicos Dios nos envía el Espíritu Santo para que con su ayuda podamos amar hasta el punto de dejar nuestras vidas. God sends us the Holy Spirit so that with his help we can love to the point of laying down our lives.
eastside faith May 20 2018 The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 CATHOLIC YOUTH SUMMER CAMP Our parish is hosting a summer program called Totus Tuus, which means Totally Yours. Totus Tuus is a fun and energetic parish based summer catechetical program for both grade school age children and middle and high school youth. Totus Tuus gathers together college students and seminarians from across the United States onto teaching teams of four in order to train them and send them out on the road to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. The teachers youthfulness, energy, and ability to witness to the faith make them particularly effective with children and young adults. Totus Tuus will be taking place from June 10-15. Please register your children entering grades 1-12 for this great catechetical opportunity to enrich their faith and relationship with God. As parents, we are called to provide for the physical and spiritual needs of our children. The gift of faith is one of the greatest gifts that you can give and foster within your children. Our prayer is that you will continue to foster that gift of faith through the Sacraments and educational opportunities for your family. Totus Tuus will be taking place from Sun., June 10, thru Fri., June 15. The program for students entering grades 1-6 will be Mon.-Fri., from 9 AM-2:30 PM. The program for teens entering grades 7-12 will be Sun.-Thurs., from 7-9 PM. The cost is $25 per student (family maximum of $75). Please register by June 6 by visiting our parish website or contacting Cody Egner at (513) 871-5757, ext. 215, or cegner@eastsideregion.org. Please consider supporting us as we host this program by providing snacks for the week, hosting the team of missionaries for a meal, providing lunch for the team of missionaries at the parish, making a financial donation to offset the program cost, or opening your home for two men or two women to stay with you for the week while they minister to our youth. To sign up to help in any way, please contact Cody Egner at (513) 871-5757, ext. 215, or cegner@eastsideregion.org.
