Hope In Action The House of Hope s Newsletter Fall 2018 1020 West Darlington Street, Florence, SC 29501 Post Office Box 7129, Florence, SC 29502 www.hofh.org 843.667.9000 Guess Who s CominG in 2019? March 4, 2019 at the Florence (civic) Center. General Admission tickets are $20 and are available at www.hofh.org. If you d like to be a table sponsor, enjoy dinner and meet the Robertson s, call Julie at 843-667-9000. We could not be more excited to announce our 2019 Evening of Hope Speakers..Willie and Korie Robertson, owners of Duck Commander and stars of Duck Dynasty! What do faith, family, ducks and money have in common? Willie and Korie Robertson! They took the family duck-callmaking company from a living room operation to a multimillion-dollar business. But these two never swayed from their deep faith that can be seen not only in the business but on their popular TV show. They will come and share about their business, family, and what faith has taught them about lifting others up! Don t miss this special opportunity,

Page 2 The Pee Dee is a Blessings From all Around! As we come into the season of Thanksgiving, we at the House of Hope find we have much to be thankful for. The people, churches, clubs, schools and businesses that have come alongside us to serve the homeless men, women and children of Florence have blessed us so much. We want to take this time to show you the creative and personal ways they have given of their time, treasure and talent! This is by no means an exhaustive list, because so many give when there is no camera to capture their generosity, but it s a diverse example of some of the ways people have given this year. Perhaps you will be inspired by their creativity. Inspired by Bryan Most of us have never been homeless, including our Executive Director. When he decided to go spend a week being homeless we all learned a lot about what is needed when you live on the street. To that end, several groups got together to make blessing bags that anyone can have in their car to give to those in need! Tracy Daniel and Jenny Hicks got this group together and they made more than 300 bags to be g i v e n away! Kids at Work! I don t know about you, but I think kids today are amazing! From volunteering to collecting needed items, we have been blessed by them! From Sandhurst s youth group, to the 7th grade class at Florence Christian to the student government at South Florence High School, this is just a small sampling of the awesome students we saw this year! Extra Watermelons! Thanks to Denise and Matthew we had watermelons for days! Sometimes it s the simple things, like watermelon in the summer! It s in the Genes! This is Kimber Crowley and her Great Grandmother. She is a great niece of Lucy T. Davis! She has been saving her money to give to the homeless! We love her heart for the homeless! It must be genetic!

Page 3 Giving Community! School s In Session When school started this year, our children were well taken care of! Businesses and churches collected school supplies for the children of Florence! We were able to bless several other non-profits with our abundance! Thank you Barrineau PH Church in Lake City and Piggly Wiggly! The Giving Church! We are so blessed by churches all over the Pee Dee who come and serve the House of Hope and the homeless of Florence. Two Connect groups from Palmetto Street Church of God took their time to prepare, serve and minister to our guests at the community shelter! Also, we were thrilled when a large group from Cornerstone Baptist Church came out to help with yard work, power washing, painting and general Spring outdoor maintenance on the Courtney McGinnis Graham Community Shelter! Creative Giving! When it comes to being creative this one might be one of our favorites! The members of Union Baptist Church in Pamplico collected stamps from a Food Lion promotion and redeemed them for new washcloths, hand towels and towels for the House of Hope! WOW! Two large garbage bags stuffed full! Clubs and Business Give too! We never get tired of getting checks! This year many of our local businesses and civic clubs made the House of Hope a priority! These are just a couple of them. On the left is the management team from QVC who made a generous donation! On the right is the Kiwanis Club of Florence, which is just one of the civic clubs in the Pee Dee who honored the House of Hope with a grant!

Talented Artists Share Their Passion! Shave and a Haircut! If you wanted a haircut from the guys at The Mailroom Barber Co. you might have a bit of a wait! But the men at the men s home get their haircuts from the barbers on site! Thank you Rob Bispo and Robert Watkins for loving the men and making them look and feel great! BBQ For a Cause We were so honored to have Mark Spurling and the Smokin -in-carolina team host an awesome BBQ fundraiser for the House of Hope. Not only did they raise a lot of money, but, as many said that day, it was the b e s t B B Q t h e y E V E R ate! S. Selemoh (homeless) Page 4 Marty Rhodes love for the homeless is apparent in the painting she did of Walking Paul, a homeless man she knew in Myrtle Beach. She wove quotes from him throughout the painting. We have t-shirts with this image on it and they are for sale t h r o u g h the HOH. Are There Other Ways to Give? I m glad you asked! We know that it can be too many steps to fill out this > form, write a check, address an envelope, find a stamp, and get to a mailbox! So you can go to www.hofh.org and make a single donation or set up a monthly donation online! Or easier yet you can just grab your cell phone right now (I know it s in your hand) and text homeless to 73256 and you will be prompted on the steps for giving. BTW once you follow all the text prompts, when you donate in the future all the information will be saved so it will only take a minute to do! Thanks for your gift! Honey, the homeless shelter just sent us another letter asking for money! Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Why does the homeless shelter always need more money? That is a very good question my friend, and it s one I ask myself often. It simply doesn t matter how much money or resources we have available at the House of Hope or any other ministry. The needs of the people we serve will always be greater than our resources. We have served over 1000 different people at the House of Hope this year alone but I receive calls daily regarding the needs of people that we can t meet. Just like the parable of the lost sheep, it s not the 99 that are safely in the flock that matter, it s the 1 that the Shepherd is concerned with helping. So why is this the case? Would you believe me if I told you it was simply by God s design? Allow me to explain. God has given us several ways to interact with Him. We can communicate with Him and He with us through reading the Bible and through prayer. We can worship Him through song and praise. We can see Him in the creations of this world, but how can we minister to Him? Matthew 25:40 The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Our sole opportunity to minister to our Lord and Savior while we are on Earth is to give and do for those that can t do for themselves. Herein lies the true reason that there will always be people in need, why there is never enough money. Please get this. It is so we can serve God and be blessed. So we can be blessed! Why in the world do you think you feel so good when you give a homeless person 2 dollars, a cheeseburger or a bottle of water? It s because God s maximizing the payoff in blessing you, the giver, much more than the homeless person. Don t get me wrong, a cheeseburger after two days of not eating is a huge blessing. I know from personal experience! But I have been much more blessed to be on the giving side of this exchange. So my first point is there will always be a need because God is simply providing you an opportunity to give to the less fortunate and be blessed. Secondly we will never meet all the needs of God s people because, well, we are not God! God has not empowered us to solve the world s problems or even the problems of an individual because that is His job and not ours. We can give people houses, cars, jobs, pay their light bill but if we don t share the love of Christ with them, pray for them, and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them their life will never be changed. Only God can change a life. We just have the unique and wonderful opportunity to be used and involved in the process. That is if we give! Not just of our money but of ourselves. You ve heard the saying Give until it hurts. I say Give until it feels good. So, because I love you and want you to experience the true joy of giving, would you please consider donating to the House of Hope this Holiday season? I assure you that your gift will be a blessing to us and more importantly, a blessing to you. Thanks for helping the House of Hope, Bryan Braddock Giving Without Increasing Your Tax Burden A qualified Charitable Distribution allows anyone ages 70.5 or older to donate money from their IRA account directly to a charitable organization without that gift counting as income. This can be a creative way to give to the House of Hope and avoid an increase in personal tax. Call us and we ll be happy to help you learn about this benefit. In Loving Memory of Mrs. Olivia McCray The House of Hope lost a dear friend on Oct 4, 2018 with the passing of Ms. Olivia. She served the ministry as an Administrative Assistant at the front desk for several years, but mostly served as a dear friend to the entire ministry staff. We will miss her smile every day.
