GOD S PLAN FOR PEOPLE LIFE POINT: God wants people to have a relationship with Him. LEADER BIBLE STUDY CREATION LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God created people in His image. BIBLE PASSAGE Genesis 2:4-24 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE God created mankind in his own image. Genesis 1:27 UNIT VERSE In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 Have you ever asked yourself why you were born? Have you ever wondered if there is a purpose for your life? These questions have haunted philosophers, students, poets, and professors for generations. The answers are found in the beginning pages of God s Word. You know the story well: God made man and placed him in the garden. God gave man work to do. Then God created woman to help man. Together, men and women are the most important part of God s creation. From the beginning God wanted partnership and relationship with those He created in His image. Sadly, sin destroyed mankind s relationship with God, and our sense of purpose blurred. Before his death in 1662, French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, wrote about an infinite abyss in the souls of men and women that can only be filled by God himself. Later, theologians described this infinite abyss as a God-sized hole. For many, this God-sized hole equates to the sense of restlessness and purposelessness so common today. Mercifully, Christ died to restore our relationship with God. When our lives are based on a relationship with God through Christ, our sense of purpose is renewed, and we can find satisfaction wherever God has placed us. How would you define your life s purpose? How is God fulfilling His purpose in your life? How can you lead your group of preteens to understand that God s purpose for their lives is based on a relationship with Him? NOTE: Downloadable versions of items identified as CD are available in the Music and Print Extras Bundle. Items identified as DVD are available in the Digital Video Bundle. SUGGESTED DATE week of September 9 Training for Bible Studies for Life: Kids is available at ministrygrid.com/web/biblestudiesforlife. Bonus teaching helps and a social media plan are available at biblestudiesforlife.com/kidshelps. 14 Unit 1, SeSSion 2

PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS Order the Bible Books 1. Place the prepared papers and the bag of craft sticks in the playing area. 2. Guide preteens to take turns drawing craft sticks from the bag. Explain that they should determine if the Bible book is located in the Old Testament or New Testament and then lay the craft stick on the matching sheet of paper. 3. Dump all of the sticks in the playing area and time the group as they sort the sticks into correct piles. If a challenge is still needed, lead them to order the books from Genesis to Revelation. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY Self-Portrait 1. Guide preteens to sit in a circle on the floor. Distribute supplies. 2. Instruct preteens to place the paper behind them on the floor. Explain that they will draw a masterpiece a self-portrait. They can use both hands if they want, but they cannot turn around to look at the paper while they draw. 3. Guide students to draw a head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, body, hands, and feet. 4. Allow each preteen to share his masterpiece. Reflect on how people take God s handiwork for granted at times, people criticize how He made themselves and others. Challenge preteens to appreciate themselves as a purposeful creation of God, to understand how much God wants them in the world, and to see that He wants to have a relationship with them. MISSIONS EMPHASIS 1. Show the South Asia Map and point out the location of Mumbai, India. 2. Explain that the poor people of India live in small, overcrowded areas called slums. A family will use tarps, wooden pieces, metal pieces, and cardboard boxes covered with old newspapers to build their one room house. This house is the size of the square you taped on the floor. 3. Invite all of the preteens to squeeze into the taped square and imagine what it would be like to live in that small space. 4. Share that over one billion people live in India, but only a few of them believe in Jesus. Pray that missionaries can help meet the physical needs of people in India. 2 sheets of paper Write Old Testament at the top of one sheet and New Testament on the other. 66 wide craft sticks, finepoint permanent marker, gallon-sized zip-top bag Write the Bible book names on separate sticks. Place the sticks in a zip-top bag. copy paper, markers International Missions: India (CD) Print the missions story and the South Asia Map. yardstick or measuring tape assortment of cardboard, old newspapers masking tape Tape an 8-by-10-foot square on the floor. Toss cardboard and old newspapers in the square. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE PRETEENS 15

Hide them among the packing peanuts. GETTING TO THE POINT God Created the World Title Banner, The People Plan (Pack Items 1, 11) Direct preteens attention to the title banner, and remind them that God wanted to show His love and help people experience His glory. Point out The People Plan poster. Reflect on how varied and beautifully different people are. Take a few moments for preteens to notice one another s features. Explain that it is likely that at some point, preteens will be unhappy with one of their physical features. Share that God has a plan for every person and they are made in His image. Explain that today s Bible story is about how God values people and wants to have a relationship with them. LOOK IN THE BOOK Quick Draw Cards (Pack Item 12), This Month s Big Words (Pack Item 13), Teaching Picture 2 Lead preteens to open their Bibles to Genesis 2. Point out the Teaching Picture. Show the God s Plan for People: Bible Story video. Form two teams. Place each set of Quick Draw Cards in a central location. Explain that a member from each team will have one minute to select a Quick Draw Card and read the passage silently. The preteen will then illustrate the passage on a large sheet of paper. Once the illustration is complete, team members will have thirty seconds to guess what the illustration shows. Stagger the team s assignments and drawings so kids remain engaged during the activity. Teams get two points for correctly guessing their teams drawings and lose one point if they guess incorrectly. Three points are given for correctly guessing the opposing team s work (only one guess is permitted). Three points are subtracted if the opposing team guesses incorrectly. The team with the most points wins. Use the fifth card for a tie-breaker, enlisting an adult to draw. Display all the drawings and debrief using the following: --Genesis 2:4-7 God sent water from the ground to nourish the earth. He formed a man from the dust of the earth. --Genesis 2:8-9 God created trees for beauty and food. He placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the center of the garden. --Genesis 2:10-17 A river watered the garden; man was instructed to care for the garden and not to eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 16 Unit 1, SeSSion 2

LIFE POINT God wants people to have a relationship with Him. --Genesis 2:18-20 God brought animals to the man to name them. --Genesis 2:21-24 While the man slept, God created a woman from his rib. Ask: What do you think were God s most important plans for man? What did God do to make man s life interesting and worthwhile? Point out This Month s Big Words poster (Pack Item 13) and explain a few of the words. Reiterate that God s purpose in creation was to demonstrate His power (glory) and His love (companionship with humankind). Explain that humans are different from God s other creation (animals, plants, and so forth) because they have the gift of a conscience and free will. Emphasize that when used correctly, these gifts allow people to give God and one another the gift of relationship. REVIEW CHALLENGE Creation from A to Z, God Created It All (CD, track 1) Guide the group to play a simple alphabet game to review things God made. Direct the preteens to spend some time thinking of things God made. Give each preteen a marker, play the song God Created It All, and guide them to work together to list something beside each letter of the alphabet. Call time after the song ends and review the answers kids provided. Follow up the game by asking the review questions (page 90). UNIT VERSE CHALLENGE Genesis 1:1 Unit Verse (Pack Item 2) Lead preteens to gather around the prepared box. Direct a volunteer to search in the box, with one hand and eyes closed, for a table tennis ball. Guide preteens to begin working together to arrange the verse in the correct order once all the balls have been located and retrieved. Encourage preteens to say the Unit Verse in unison with these various voice tones: whisper, mouse, deep, robot, and so forth. OPTION: Memorize the Weekly Bible Verse: Genesis 1:27. APPLY THE BIBLE AND PRAY Remind preteens that God made everything from nothing, but that His most important creation is people. God wants people to have a relationship with Him. Pray with preteens for a greater respect and understanding of God s authority, kindness, and His desire to have a relationship with them. Show the God s Plan for People: Life Action video. If a player s marble does not land inside the grid, ask the question located in the space nearest the marble, and award fifty points for an appropriate response. 3. Point out each question or statement. Explain that answers should be concrete and unique (not previously used). --How can I follow God s plan to care for creation? --How can I follow God s plan to relate to other people? --Tell a fact about God s plan for salvation. --How can I follow God s plan for me in my daily life? 4. The object of the game is for preteens to travel over the rope without touching the rope or losing grip of their teammates hands. 3. Direct the teams to then travel under the rope without touching the rope or losing the grip of their teammates hands. 4. Encourage preteens to think creatively about ways they could get over or under the rope. 5. Remind preteens that people are created in God s image; therefore, each person has deep value and a special place and purpose. 6.
