Pre class a ct v t Preclass Centers In the preclass centers chldren wll use language, motor, and cogntve sklls, learn to nteract wth peers and cooperate n small groups. Select four centers to use ths unt. Assgn a teacher to set up and supervse each center wth no more than sx chldren. Materals IMPORTANT: Do not allow any small toys n the classroom. Frst check all toys for sze. You can obtan a safety cylnder from a pedatrcan. Any object that can ft nto the cylnder s too small and could cause a chld to choke. B b l e S t o r y Where n the Temple? The chldren wll learn that when Josah found the Bble scroll, he loved and obeyed t because t was God s word. Bble Story Text 2 Kngs 22:1-23:3 Materals For each chld: a household cleanng tool: broom, mop, dust rag, clean sponge, etc. For the teacher: Bble large sheet or blanket 3 chars 10 peces of paper to represent trash 1 trash can 1 crown 1 pece of whte constructon paper 2 cardboard tubes from dry cleaner pant hangers (optonal) tape gold rbbon, or yarn marker Preparaton 1. Make the scroll as follows: A. Wrte s God s word! n bold letters on the whte constructon paper. B. Tape each short end of the paper onto a cardboard tube formng a scroll. C. Roll the scroll together and te t wth a pece of rbbon. 2. Prepare the temple area as follows: A. Set up the three chars aganst a wall n a sem-crcle. B. Drape the sheet over the chars. C. Crumple the paper and place t on and around the chars as trash. D. Place the scroll among the paper. Found It Open the Bble to 2 Kngs 22. Show the chldren the temple area. Explan that t s the temple of God from the Bble. Ask the chldren f t looks lke people have been takng care of t. No, t doesn t look lke people have taken care of t, does t? Today we are gong to hear a story from the Bble about a young kng named Josah who cleaned up the temple. And you get to help me tell the story. Choose a boy to be Josah. Kng Josah, we need to gve you a crown! Place the crown on the boy s head. Doesn t he look lke a good kng? Kng Josah went to the temple and found t a mess. Wow, ths temple s a mess. Do you know where we can fnd a broom? Oh, there s one. Who would lke to be Kng Josah s helper? Pck another chld to take the broom and stand next to Kng Josah. Contnue gvng out the props untl everyone has somethng to help clean the temple. Kng Josah told some of the people to fx and clean up the temple (2 Kngs 22:3-7). Have the boy playng Josah tell the others to clean the temple. Have the chldren clean up the temple. What should we do wth all that paper? Yes, let s put t n the trash can. Watch for someone to fnd the scroll. When t s found say: What s that? That doesn t look lke trash! That looks pretty specal! What s t? Kng Josah, why don t you pull the rbbon and open t? Have everyone st down. Let s lsten to what s wrtten on ths scroll. It says, s God s word! Dd you know that a long tme ago, ths s what the Bble looked lke? Kng Josah and hs helpers found the Bble, and they ddn t even know t! When they read from the Bble scroll, everyone lstened carefully. The people were so surprsed when they heard God s word because t had been lost n the drty temple for a long tme. Do you thnk the people lked what they read and heard from the scroll? Yes, they loved t! Have the chldren celebrate and clap ther hands. Kng Josah sad, s God s word. Let s all obey the Bble! What do you thnk all the people sad? They sad, Yes! Yes! Yes! (2 Tmothy 3:16) Materals For the teacher: Bble 1 bucket 1 chld s shovel or large servng spoon 1 small Bble that can easly ft nto the bucket dggng materal: clean sand, uncooked rce, cornmeal, or shredded paper markers or crayons 1 pece of whte paper a sheet, tablecloth or shower curtan Reproducble Pages: Page A, 1 copy for the teacher Page B, 1 copy for the teacher Page C, 1 copy for the teacher Preparaton 1. Cut out the pctures of the copes of Reproducble Pages A, B and C. 2. Color the pctures wth markers or crayons. 3. On whte constructon paper draw a treasure map of your classroom and make an X n the spot where you wll have your center. Crumple the map a few tmes to make t look old. 4. Fll the bucket halfway wth dggng materal and hde the small Bble deep nsde. Instructons 1. Place the sheet on the floor and have the chldren st around the edge. 2. Open the Bble. says that t s God s word. Can you say that wth me? s God s word. God gave us the Bble because he loves us. Do you thnk the Bble s specal to God? Yes, t s very specal. Sng I Love to Read the Bble from the Unt 13 Song Sheet. Encourage each chld to hug the Bble as you sng. 3. Do you know what a treasure s? A treasure s somethng very specal. Let s look at ths pcture. Hold up the frst pcture. What s ths? Ths s a chld openng a present. Presents are fun to get, but they are not treasures. Gve the frst pcture to a chld to hold. 4. Hold up the second pcture. What s ths pcture? Ths s a pcture of some food. We need food to be healthy, but food s not a treasure. Hand the second pcture to a chld to hold. 5. Hold up the thrd pcture. What s ths pcture? Ths s a pcture of a car. Cars help us by gvng us a way to come to church, but a car s not a treasure. Hand the thrd pcture to a chld to hold. 6. Hold up the Bble. s our treasure! It s our treasure because t s God s word. 7. Sometmes people look for treasures. They get a treasure map (hold up the map), and they follow the map, and they fnd the treasure. Let s look at our map. It s a map of our classroom. Wow! Ths map says there s a treasure rght here n our classroom. Look, the treasure s rght here n ths area! And, look, our map says the treasure s rght here n ths bucket! Do you want to look n the bucket to fnd the treasure? 8. Place the bucket on the sheet n front of the chldren. 9. Choose a chld to use the shovel and carefully dg for the treasure n the bucket. 10. When the chld fnds the Bble clap and cheer. Mary, you found the treasure! Look, Mary found the treasure. The treasure s the Bble. 11. Let each chld have a turn to dg for the treasure. Take photos of the chldren dggng, fndng, and holdng up the treasure to dsplay next week for parents to see or take home. C r a f t Kng Josah s Crown The chldren wll make crowns remndng them of Josah, the kng who loved God s word. Materals For each chld: poster board, 11" x 11" glue stck For the teacher: constructon paper scssors marker tape stapler Reproducble Pages: Page D, 1 copy for the teacher Page E, 1 copy for the teacher Preparaton 1. Cut out the stencls from the copes of Reproducble Page D and E. 2. Trace and cut out one crown for each chld from poster board. 3. Trace and cut out one of each of the sde tabs from poster board for each chld. Be sure to trace and cut the slts where ndcated on the stencls. 4. Wrte s God s word. across the back of each crown. 5. Cut the colored constructon paper nto small shapes no larger than 1". Cut approxmately ffteen shapes for each chld. 6. Make a model of the craft followng the nstructons. Instructons 1. Show the chldren the fnshed crown. Today we are learnng about a young boy named Josah who was a kng and who loved the Bble. 2. Gve each chld a crown and ffteen constructon paper shapes. Have them glue the shapes to the front of the crowns. 3. Staple the sde tabs to each crown, as shown n Fgure A. NOTE: Please note the orentaton of the slts on the sde tabs. 4. Place tape over the staples to smooth the staple s edges. 5. Wrte the chldren s names on ther crowns. 6. Place the crown on each chld s head and nterlock the sde tabs to adjust the ft. See Fgure B. Today we are gong to hear a story from the Bble about a young kng named Josah who cleaned up the temple. And you get to help me tell the story. Choose a boy to be Josah. Kng Josah, we need to gve you a crown! Place the crown on the boy s head. Doesn t he look lke a good kng? Kng Josah went to the temple and found t a mess. Wow, ths temple s a mess. Do you know where we can fnd a broom? Oh, there s one. Who would lke to be Kng Josah s helper? Pck another chld to take the broom and stand next to Kng Josah. Contnue gvng out the props untl everyone has somethng to help clean the temple. Kng Josah told some of the people to fx and clean up the temple (2 Kngs 22:3-7). Have the boy playng Josah tell the others to clean the temple. Have the chldren clean up the temple. What should we do wth all that paper? Yes, let s put t n the trash can. Watch for someone to fnd the scroll. When t s found say: What s that? That doesn t look lke trash! That looks pretty specal! What s t? Kng Josah, why don t you pull the rbbon and open t? Have everyone st down. Let s lsten to what s wrtten on ths scroll. It says, s God s word! Dd you know that a long tme ago, ths s what the Bble looked lke? Kng Josah and hs helpers found the Bble, and they ddn t even know t! When they read from the Bble scroll, everyone lstened carefully. The people were so surprsed when they heard God s word because t had been lost n the drty temple for a long tme. Do you thnk the people lked what they read and heard from the scroll? Yes, they loved t! Have the chldren celebrate and clap ther hands. Kng Josah sad, s God s word. Let s all obey the Bble! What do you thnk all the people sad? They sad, Yes! Yes! Yes! Materals For each chld: glue stck 1 pece of whte constructon paper crayons For the teacher: scssors whte crayon black marker gold or yellow or orange tssue paper black constructon paper Reproducble pages: Page F, 1 copy for each chld Preparaton 1. Prepare a temple cutout for each chld as follows: A. Cut out the temples from the copes of Reproducble Page F. IMPORTANT: Cut between the outsde double lnes only. Do not cut the sold lne at ths tme. B. Cut between the T -shaped double lnes makng the doors on the temple cutout. C. Fold back the paper to make the doors open and shut, as shown n Fgure A. D. On the nsde of the left door wrte 2 Kngs 22:1-23:3. 2. Attach the constructon paper to each temple cutout as follows: A. Algn the temple cutout to the corner of a sheet of whte constructon paper. B. Glue the temple cutout to the constructon paper. See Fgure B. IMPORTANT: Be careful not to glue the doors. C. Trm off the excess constructon paper, and then cut out a new roof by cuttng along the sold lnes at the top of the temple cutout. See Fgure C. 3. Make a Bble for each chld as follows: A. Cut one 1 1 / 2" x 2" rectangle for each chld from black constructon paper. B. Wth a whte crayon wrte My Bble on each black rectangle. 4. Cut twenty 2" squares from gold tssue paper for each chld. 5. Make a model of the craft followng the nstructons. Instructons 1. Show the chldren the sample craft and say: In our Bble story today, we are learnng about Kng Josah who found a treasure when he went to the temple. Do you know what t was? Yes, t was the Bble. Today we are gong to make a temple. What do you thnk s nsde ths temple? Open the temple doors on your model. Look, a Bble! Today we wll make a temple just lke ths one! 2. Gve each chld a temple and a Bble. Help them glue ther Bbles nsde the temple doors. 3. Gve each chld twenty squares of gold tssue, and have them glue the squares to the outsde of the temple. Concluson Remnd the chldren that Josah was the kng when the Bble was found n the temple. Tell the chldren how much God loved Josah. Explan that Josah also loved God. He obeyed the Bble, because he loved God. Emphasze to the chldren how much God loves them as well, and that they can also express ther love for God by obeyng the Bble! Teacher Tps As the chldren are workng sng a few songs about the Bble from the Unt 13 Song Sheet. Put away the crayons when the chldren begn to glue the tssue paper.
