The Story The Good Samaritan Turn with me to Luke 10:25 as we look at one of the most well known parables of Jesus, the story of the Good Samaritan.

Transcription:

The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37

The Good Samaritan The Lawyer and Jesus (v. 25-29)

Luke 10:25-29 25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

Luke 10:25-29 He said to him, "What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?" 26 So he answered and said, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND,' and 'YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'" 27 And He said to him, "You have answered rightly; do this and you will live."

Luke 10:25-29 26 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

The Good Samaritan The Lawyer and Jesus (v. 25-29) The Parable (v. 30-35)

Luke 10:30-35 Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Luke 10:30-35 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:30-35 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.'

The Good Samaritan The Lawyer and Jesus (v. 25-29) The Parable (v. 30-35) The Discussion (v. 36-37)

Luke 10:36-37 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" 37 And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

What is My Duty? OPPORTUNITY + ABILITY = RESPONSIBILITY Gal. 6:9-10; 2 Cor. 8:12

Galatians 6:9-10 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

2 Corinthians 8:12 For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.

Who Do I Help? Family? Neighbors? Friends? Brethren? Strangers like me? Whoever needs help?

Who Do I Help? Family? Neighbors? Friends? Brethren? Strangers like me? Whoever needs help? Across boundaries? Socio-economic? Ethnic? National? Moral? Religious?

Why Do I Refrain From Helping? Someone else will help I m busy I m likely to make things worse It would make me uncomfortable It is inconvenient It would keep me from doing other things that I would rather do with my time, money, etc. I ll help the next person I don t love them enough to help

Overcoming Obstacles to Helping First things First Luke 10:25-29 Consider the alternatives

Choosing to Help Help Pay the cost of time and resources Bring glory to Jesus - Mat. 5:14-16 Obey Jesus command to go and do likewise While loving and helping my fellowman Don t Help Look for and find reasons not to help Hide Christ from the world Disobey the direct command of Christ Only display love within the closed circles of family, friends and fellow Christians

Matthew 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Luke 10:36-37 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" 37 And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."
