Called to Action PARISH LIFE LET US PRAY DIVINE MERCY NOVENA The Divine Mercy Novena begins TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6 with 6:00 pm Mass followed by the sung Chaplet and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and continues for nine Tuesdays in preparation for the Feast of Divine Mercy. St. Faustina Kowalska, a simple Polish nun who in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary recording the revelations she received about God s mercy. The message is nothing new for Catholics, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through Scripture and Tradition: that God is merciful and forgiving and that we too must show mercy and forgiveness. In the Divine Mercy devotion, the message takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God s love is unlimited and available to everyone especially the greatest of sinners. The message of Divine Mercy is that God loves us all of us no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others, sharing His joy. The devotional practices revealed through St. Faustina were given to us as vessels of mercy through which God s love can be poured out upon the whole world. Cor ad Cor Loquitur - Heart speaks to heart. The Heart of Christ speaks to the heart of man - to your heart - if you will open the door and listen to Him. Divine Mercy Novena Nine Tuesdays beginning Tuesday, February 6 6:00 pm Mass followed by sung Chaplet and Benediction All are welcome! ASH WEDNESDAY MASS SCHEDULE Ash Wednesday, February 14 - Day of Fast and Abstinence 6:30 am 8:00 am 12:00 noon 6:00 pm Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season, is observed six and one half weeks before Easter. It is a day of fast and abstinence when ashes are blessed and imposed on the foreheads of the faithful to remind us of our obligation to do penance of sins, to seek spiritual renewal by means of prayer, fasting, good works and by bearing with patience the trials and difficulties of everyday life. The ashes are used to mark the forehead with the Sign of the Cross, with the reminder: Remember you are dust, and to dust you will return. BATON ROUGE, LA 5

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE The feast day of Saint Blaise is Saturday, February 3rd and one that is annually celebrated with the blessing of the throats. But who is Saint Blaise and why is he associated with the blessing of the throat? Blaise was born in Armenia in the 3rd century. He was a physician and bishop and his devotion to the church and his virtuous duty to Christian values earned him acclaim among the clergy. Blaise lived during a time of cruel persecution. He was imprisoned and while there, jailers permitted him to receive visitors who were sick and requested his intercession. Many were cured. One story indicates that a mother s son was choking from a fish bone lodged in the throat. Once Blaise prayed over him, the bone was dislodged and the boy was healed. Thus he is the patron saint of all diseases of the throat. Our Lady of Mercy will celebrate the BLESSING OF THE THROATS following the 8:00 am Mass on Saturday, February 3. 8 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
