*Celebrations and Concerns *Benediction *Postlude Fanfare Soler Celebrating Milestones! We welcome you to one of my favorite Sundays of the year, Graduation Sunday. This year we especially honor Meredith Fuchs, daughter of Leslie Fuchs and Virginia Davis. She is also the granddaughter of our beloved Patti Fuchs. She is graduating from Stratford Academy and will be attending the University of Georgia. She has also been selected to play in the Red Coat Marching Band. I can t help but smile at the symmetry. Two of the most faithful Red Coat Marching Band alumni were the late Loyd Landrum and his wife Mary. They actually met in the Red Coat Marching Band, and I m sure Loyd would be delighted that the Vineville Baptist connection to the Red Coat Band continues! We also celebrate the graduation of our sixth graders into the youth program. Today we recognize Camille Fry, daughter of John Jr. and Candace Fry, Mary Hutcherson, daughter of Shannon and Eva Hutcherson, Kailey Goodrich, daughter of John Goodrich and Keagan Waystack, and Lily Smith, daughter of Gregg and Kelly Smith. We are delighted to be able to watch these young ladies growing up in faith in our midst. Last week we noted the graduations of who earned a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry from McAfee Theological Seminary in Atlanta, and Brianna Pylant, who earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mercer University. We also want to recognize Marisol Mighty Imani Ortiz, who is graduating from Bard College in Annandale-on-the-Hudson. Marisol, daughter of Cindi Ortiz, will be receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She will attending the University of Pennsylvania s Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program. And Frieda Underwood is graduating from Wilkes University with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Congratulations to all on these important milestones. We will also have a chance to celebrate another milestone this week in our church conference on Wednesday, the endorsement of a Personnel Committee recommendation to approve the position of part-time minister to children and young families. Our children s workers have been sacrificial in their commitment to our children s ministry, but for many years they have been asking for the church to invest resources in a minister to this age-group. It is time we heeded them. Our children may presently represent only a small percentage of our congregation as a whole but they represent one hundred percent of our future! We do right to invest in them. Don t forget, we will also be approving the Nominating Committee s report, too. Remember that next Sunday we will celebrate communion and present our newest members to the congregation. This Memorial Day weekend also presents the perfect opportunity for us to display our updated plaque that lists all of the members of our church who have served in the Armed Forces. Don t forget, following the service we will honor all of our newest members with a short reception in the guest reception area. Be sure to come and speak a word of affirmation and welcome. We are so grateful for the participation of our youth in many aspects of worship this morning. We thank them for leading us this morning in music, prayer, Scripture reading and collecting the offering. Their presence underscores the importance of our youth ministry for the life of this church. Earlier in the year, I looked at the story of the Prodigal Son from the perspective of the elder brother in a sermon entitled, Crab Apple Christians. Now it is time to consider the story from the perspective of the younger brother in today s message, The Seven Sad Wishes of Adulthood. It is a message aimed at young people, but the message contained in Jesus powerful story has truths that touch lives at every age. A word from your pastor, Dr. Meredith Fuchs Ms. Meredith Fuchs is graduating from Stratford Academy. She is the daughter of Leslie Fuchs and Virginia Davis, and she is the granddaughter of Patti Fuchs. Her honors include the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Award, University of Virginia Jefferson Book Award, Excellence in Latin Award and the John Philip Sousa Band Award. Meredith has participated in the Region Honor Band for the past four years, and she has won First Place in the GHSA Region Literary Competition for Oral Interpretation for the past three years. She was also a nominee for the Golden Eagle Citizenship Award. Meredith will attend the University of Georgia on a pre-med track with a major in Genetics. She has been selected to play in the Red Coat Marching Band.
