Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church 315 Winchester Road Huntsville, AL 35811 Volume 14, Issue 10 October 2017 Encouraging the Elders, While Preparing the Young I have written to you who are God s children because you know the Father. I have written to you who are mature in the faith because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning. I have written to you who are young in the faith because you are strong. God s word lives in your hearts, and you have won your battle with the evil one. ~I John 2:14 ~ The Herald is a monthly publication of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Members are encouraged to submit all newsworthy articles by the 20th of the month to newsletter@unionchapel-hsv.org. All articles are subject to editing for clarity and grammatical correctness.

From the Pastor s Pen This world is not our home. We are just passing through. To live our lives with the understanding that we did not come to stay helps us to put everything into proper perspective. Many trust in material things, things that will soon pass away. An enormous amount of energy is put into obtaining status, amassing wealth, receiving recognition, and have things. Oftentimes, this pursuit of things keeps us preoccupied and we lose focus on what is really valuable in life. done in our youth. It is in our youth that we develop a mind-set toward God. The Holy Spirit teaches us that this world is not our home; that only what we do for the Lord will last. Paul put it this way: For we know that, if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens II Corinthians 5:1. Matthew 6:19-21 admonishes us to lay up our treasures in Things Eternal Pastor s Appreciation Month heaven rather than on earth. The songwriter puts it this way: Build your hopes on things eternal, hold to God s unchanging hand. Let me remind you today to focus on the things of God, not man-made, earthly treasures. As the years pass and we grow older and wiser, more attention is naturally given to God and His word. But, seeking God s presence and His will for us must not be put off until we are old and have nowhere else to turn. I contend that God should be a priority in our lives in the days of our youth. It is in our youth that we develop a mind-set to serve and to please God. I encourage you brothers and sisters, build your hopes on things eternal, not on temporal things. Yes, we are only passing through this world. No, this world is not our home. So, we live in total faith and trust in God, knowing that one day, we will live in our heavenly home! We have a building of God, eternal in the heavens! Praise the Lord! Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. ~I Timothy 5:17~ With Love and Grateful Appreciation Thank you for the faith you inspire by the way you live your life and the service you give to others in God s ministry. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. ~Daniel 12:3 2

Wisdom to Live By Uncontrolled Weakness, Judges 14. The book of Judges tells of Samson, a man so strong he could kill a lion with his bare hands (14:5-6). He possessed physical strength unequaled by any human being. But this could not compensate for his inner weakness. All of us have areas of weakness. God wants these character flaws to teach us how totally dependent we are upon Him. When we handle them properly, they drive us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with the Lord. But uncontrolled weakness wreaks havoc in a person s life. Samson s Achilles heel was uncontrolled lust. Although he was raised in a godly home and had a clear calling in his life, he gave in to his desires and deliberately violated the truth he knew so well. Despite Nazirite laws forbidding involvement with foreigners, Samson pursued a Philistine woman (v. 2). Later, he met the enticing Delilah, and even though her motives were blatantly treacherous, he gave himself over -- heart, mind, and spirit -- to sexual indulgence. He was in such bondage to the sin that he ultimately allowed it to dictate his actions, even at the cost of his life. Before he died, Samson lost everything: his strength, eyesight, and honor. The man who once led his country mightily became a slave to his enemies (16:18-25). What are your weaknesses? Personality flaws can be a powerful motivation for good or ill, depending on your response. A proclivity for sin can ruin your life - - as it did Samson s - - or drive you to utter dependence on God. The outcome is up to you. ~Dr. Charles Stanley Wellness News Change your brain (for the better!) with exercise. As a rule, the things that benefit your body below your shoulders also benefit your brain (eating nutritious whole foods and getting good quality sleep, for example). If you need another reason to start or amp up an exercise program, research shows that along with keeping your heart, muscles, and bones in good shape, physical activity seems to be one of the best ways to keep your memory and thinking skills sharp as you age. As for the how, research has shown that exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus, an area of the brain that governs memory. A new study suggests that physical activity may affect the elasticity of the hippocampus, too, which also helps with memory. Time to get the fitness party started! Pick an activity you enjoy that gets your heart pumping and fits into your schedule and budget. Walking, biking, swimming, dancing, or playing tennis are all fantastic choices. Plan to spend about 150 minutes a week, and if that s intimidating, start small and build up to it. You ll help to keep your body strong and healthy - - and your brain sharp. ~Cleveland Clinic Wellness 4
