NEW FRIENDS ST. PATRICK S ICON BAPTISM St. Patrick s Architectural Summary A brochure entitled Architectural history and design of St. Patrick s Episcopal Church has been developed thanks to a parishioner who compiled the document from an oral interview with Dr. M. A. Gardiner, who was the Construction Chairperson for the building of St. Patrick s. The document provides a fascinating story, giving the background of why St. Patrick s is designed the way it is and the history behind the building and the site. The document is being distributed by email and posted on our website. Are you up for a St. Patrick s tour? <Julie Noh-Smith> Give Hope Global - Haiti Mission Trip The latest Mission trip team went to Haiti from June 11 th to 18 th. Volunteers from our church included Bill, Lillian and Collin Flannery, Bob Smith, Jackie and Ashley Pehan. The team returned home safely and Bill Flannery reported, "All six of us had a great time. We worked on construction projects, saw patients, and helped the deaf community. Most of all we enjoyed the workings of the Holy Spirit in Haiti. We are always humbled by how things just fall into place on our trips. The children were so grateful for hugs and holding hands. They just craved human contact and love. Our prayers are that some of you Xind it in your heart to join the team in October or next February, or to sponsor one of our parishioners to travel to Haiti. Spaces are still available on the next trip from October 7 th to 14 th. No special skills are needed, just a willingness to serve. The trip costs around $2100. You can also donate to support a St. Patrick's parishioner to travel. <Bill Flannery> From the left: Bob Smith, Collin Flannery, Jackie and Ashley Pehan, Bill and Lillian Flannery!1

Icon of St. Patrick, Our Patron Saint St. Patrick Icon Preview & Progress On June 4 th, Veryle Lynn Cox, the iconographer of our Icon of St. Patrick came to St. Patrick s along with the icon and let us paint. A clay slip, made of clay from our church property, was used on the edges of the icon and this is to represent our human nature, just as icons represent our transformed or divine nature. Over 60 parishioners participated in painting the one-inch square blocks along the edge of the icon. It is symbolic that the icon will not be there for us to revere but rather it is something that St. Patrick s parishioners created together. Since the last visit of the iconographer, the icon has progressed as you see below. As the process continues, you are also invited to pray for our parish and her work. Here are some photos of initial steps of the icon creation. Each step has a meaning. Please see the numbers in top left hand corner of each picture and match with the meaning below: 1) These dark colors, Roshkrish, are the foundation for all the later colors. Notice that the white of the gesso board is still somewhat visible. Soon black lines will tame the chaos of the darkness. 2) With the black and venetian red lines dexining the chaos of Roshkrish, order and transxiguration come to the icon. The lines represent the Law as given to Moses. 3) At last the light! First Highlights are painted on the dark Roshkrish, representing the beginning of God s light coming into our consciousness and illuminating the chaos underneath. 4) By Xloating semi-transparent colors over each section of the icon, the base colors are softened and enhanced. Mistakes become veiled and redemption brings new hope.!4
5) Self-knowledge and inner light, Anthropos, begin to be revealed as the second highlights rexlect facets of life experience. Brighter colors are layered on top of the darker, earlier colors, but some of the earlier stages are still visible. 6) Representing repentance, the Second Float smoothens colors, heals mistakes, and provides a harmonizing base from which to build the next set of highlights. 7) The inner light of St. Patrick now begin to show on the outside in the Third Highlights, with arrows of light pointing to his face. 8) See the green stripes. They will be shaded and highlighted later. Also, the big letters on the scroll now have been gilded and the small letters have been subtly highlighted paintbrush to the icon board. < Rev. Foyer Groups Forming for the Fall The sign-ups for Foyer Groups have started and the deadline is September 5 th! The Episcopal Church calls such dinner groups foyer groups because the word foyer means welcome. The concept of St. Patrick s foyer groups is simple. We form groups of 8-10 people in the fall of the year and meet to share food, and our lives, with each other. The gatherings are informal and the members of each group make their own schedule. The groups typically meet in members homes for a meal or meet at a restaurant; the group can decide what format works best. This is a great way to become better acquainted with other St. Patrick s people! Put this on your to-do list to join a fun group of people for food and fellowship. < Jan Krumel> Open Choir Why does the choir not wear their uniform this month? During the month of July, by tradition, an "open" choir is offered. Anyone interested in trying the choir without a commitment is invited to join the choir in the choir room at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings during the month of July. Back to School Bash It s time again to donate for this year s Back to School Bash! This year s collection of items is different. The organizers could purchase school supplies with lower bulk prices. There were two ways to help out: Picking up a Tennis Shoe Tag in the narthex then dropping them off in the box at church or writing a check to St. Patrick's.. As of the July 16 th closing date, 30 pairs of tennis shoes and $630 donation had been received. These shoes will be delivered on Saturday August 5 th, at Mooresville Middle School. <Charlotte Lafon>!6
