3 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, January is often a season of new beginnings, and and at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, we have many new beginnings to celebrate, including a new series of sermons from the Gospel According to John. From now through Easter (April 1), we will be following John s gospel in our Sunday worship. We won t be taking it verse by verse, but we ll be hitting some of the major stories and developing the major themes. If you re looking for some new winter reading material, I suggest reading through John s gospel. It s just 21 chapters, and John writes with a style that many readers find appealing. If you d like to read ahead in preparation for Sunday worship, find below the readings from John that we will be tackling this winter from the pulpit. January 7 - Jesus Says Come and See - John 1:35-51 January 14 - Wedding at Cana - John 2:1-11 January 21 - Jesus Cleanses the Temple - John 2:13-25 January 28 - Nicodemus - John 3:1-21 February 4 - The Woman at the Well - John 4:1-42 February 11 - (Transfiguration) - The Man Born Blind - John 9:1-41 February 14 (Ash Wednesday) - The Good Shepherd - John 10:1-18 February 18 - Jesus Raises Lazarus - John 11:1-44 February 25 - Jesus Washes Feet - John 13:1-17 March 4 - Peter's Denial - John 18:12-27 March 11 - Jesus and Pilate - John 18:28-40 March 18 - Jesus Condemned - John 19:1-16a March 25 - (Palm Sunday) - The Crucified Messiah - John 19:16-22 March 29 - (Maundy Thursday - Jesus' Last Words - John 19:23-30 March 30 - (Good Friday) - Jesus the Passover Lamb - John 19:31-42 April 1 - (Easter) - Resurrection - John 20:1-18 April 8 - Thomas - John 20:19-31 Happy New Year! 8 Presbyterian Women - January, 2018 Last Spring we collected children s books for the Center for Transforming Lives (the old YWCA downtown) to use in their day care program. We wanted to know more about them and their mission. We invited Ana Van de Venter to come speak to us in November. She brought Abby Cox, a counselor at the Center. Together they explained the Center s mission: to help women and children end the cycle of poverty. Their three step plan: 1. Provide emergency shelter and safe housing 2. Provide free childcare to homeless families 3. Help with job counseling, training and placement along with financial help As they told story after story of client s struggles and successes, their passion and love for their work shone through. Our hearts were moved and we will be looking for other ways to help. Final Sole Hope Update: Miriam reports the last 95 shoe parts have been mailed. We thank everyone who contributed denim, donated money for mailing or cut and cut and cut. We thank you, Miriam, for spearheading this adventurous undertaking. (We re glad you got your dining rom back). There is left over denim. If anyone an put this to good use, call the Church Office.
